I own one. Not a particularly loud guitar. By far the most enjoyable to play of all my Martin's. Even, bright, rich tone. Excellent neck shape(the best Martin neck IMO). Overall, I can play things on this guitar easily that can be a challenge on my other Martin's due to the neck and tone. Will give you an edge when playing with others.

I agree. I got a "bottom line" Martin DX1RAE - and the lack of inlays is what hook me up on it. "All killer, no filler"

I have the D28cw #454. It really was and will be the best guitar I have or will ever own. I am still looking for a Gibson J45 Sunburst because I've wanted one since I was like 12 years old but I Know while the J45 has some mojo IMO, it won't ever hold up to the D28CW tonally or in volume.

I love this box. Sounds perfect. The only thing i believe that could have been done better was the pickguard design.

I honestly don't like the sound of that guitar though I suspect it may be more a matter of the miking. All I hear are the brand new strings. I have two Martins that are completely different guitars, but for the dreadnaught sound I'll take my 2001 Veterans which is, I think, based on the HD-28. It just projects so nicely and yet has really good definition. I tried out a bunch and promised myself when I played the one that sounded right I'd buy it. This was the one. I've listened to Tony Rice play the original Clarence White guitar and I'd give every guitar I have for that one. I can't play like Tony, but it's clear that guitar has something in it like no other.

I live in the same town as Tony and have played his guitar. It's not the guitar. It's Tony Rice. His talent transcends the instrument. In anyone else's hands it sounds just like most other old Martin D-28s. He once told me that people have handed him old Martin's to play all his career and that only about one in ten of those are what people expect. It's the player.

Wht the hell did Martin put a 25.34” scale on the reissue. the guitar was modified by Roy Noble of Van Nuys, Ca.., the fingerboard was replace with a Gretsch fingerboard that had a 25.25” scale and bound with white plastic. Roy cleaned up the sound nole. i wad working with Roy from 1966 until 1969 and worked in Clarence's D28 guitar a few times

Craig, was the soundhole really burned with cigarettes before Roy Noble cleaned it up as some people claim?

Mattheiu: I too owned a DX1 I liked it but I had a chance to trade it, and a Taylor 110 I owned for a Road Series DRS1 made in Sapele. Does the DRS1 sound as good as this D28? Notta chance. My DRS1 isd a retired RR engineers affordable. Guy in our Bg group owns a D28. Another owns a 68 D35. Holy grails in the Bg genre.

see, I've been telling everyone to mic like that. they just don't believe me when i tell them the strings are where the sound comes from. that big box is just an arm rest you know
@MadnessOfMarmots
@MadnessOfMarmots 7 жыл бұрын
The sound comes mostly from the vibration of the top plate, which is set in motion by the strings. in case you were being ironic, the mic placement there is to get a more balanced sound

Interesting response! From a practical point of view it makes no difference as there are side markers on the neck. I have this model and like it a lot.

Does that Guitar get up and make you your Coffee in the morning because it almost play's itself . The tone is overpowering and driving . I would have a hard time putting it down . What a voice it has ?

What's the background on the Clarence White D28? Was it a special build? I don't recall these specs on any other D28s, regardless of the year.
@faltsetas
@faltsetas 9 жыл бұрын
Its based on clarence whites old Martin guitar, special build? it is a signature edition that its build like original, The standard d28 are not like this thats why you didn't find any like this guitar...
@wezzlyn
@wezzlyn 9 жыл бұрын
No, no. I don't mean the signature model. I mean Clarence's original D28. It seems to be the only one like it.
@faltsetas

It is the only one like it... no guitar can be the same, its obvious isn't it? the only thing that its not original on his guitar is the enlarged sound hole, look at this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpOoi4GiYseArZY&spfreload=10

Do you think Clarence needed a road markers on a guitar? The Santa Cruz Tony Rice model doesn't have any. Lots of custom guitars don't. I never had a problem playing a Tony Rice model without them. It still had side markers on the binding edge if you needed a reference for playing positions.

Most performers should be looking out engaging with the audience. I find the side markings sufficient when I have to glance down or put on a cappo. I say this and when I watch videos of Clarence, he spent a great deal of time looking down at the guitar and especially the right hand. He was so wonderfully talented.

To begin to compare this Martin with Taylor is laughable. I had two Taylors (812 C and Dan Crary Signature) and got rid of them as soon as I got my first Martin HD28 - Taylor is okay to own if you have to play outside in the rain or otherwise just don't want to ruin a great guitar.
