I got a better than average, 7% inflationary rise this year and I can honestly say I've never felt poorer. I do not believe official inflation figures - not even slightly. The rise I see on core food items (about 15-20%), petrol (15%), home energy (anything upto 100%), insurance (30%), privatised public transport (15%). I think we're lied to about real world inflation because it kicks off all sorts of problems with budgets & strikes. It's probably double what we're told which means any payrise you get is just melting away in your bank account.

The key is getting rid of all debt, including mortgage. I cleared my mortgage in March 2023 which was 12 years early. It wasn't easy by any means, its taken years of doing without and living like I was broke. Would I say it's been worth it? 100% yes, especially with the economic mess the country is in now.

They give it with one hand take it back with the other hand. I'm a pensioner, my car tax has nearly doubled since last year. Then there is all the tax they take on petrol. If you travel you are taxed, if you have water, gas and or electricity, you are taxed. If you have a pet then you are taxed on that if you have pet insurance,. It is still a high tax economy. Labour are no better, Gordon Brown introduced over 100 stealth taxes.

I totally agree with Martin Lewis. I work in an industrial environment, it's a heavy manual job that can't be done from home as many jobs in my northern town are, it's minimum wage and yet we were classed as essential workers who had to attend work during the pandemic to get paid as we were not eligible for furlough. If we got COVID it was two weeks at home on statutory sick pay only. You had city workers in office jobs sat at home on furlough payments higher than the wages I was taking home for going out, doing an average 42.5 hour week and risking my health. When you look at it like this you can see the maths don't add up. It is now a lot of these essential workers who worked throughout the pandemic who are now suffering the most from the cost of life being crisis.

I’m a yank who lived the past 2 yrs in the UK.It’s been an eye opening experience to say the least.Don’t get me wrong, the US is no better in terms of a polarized working class. What’s happening in the UK right now is a house of cards. The British government gives a handout but takes it back with tax hikes, how is that economic policy working?Raising the living wage and raising salaries looks good on paper but that only fosters inflation because goods&services will rise with the average worker being able to pay more for the same thing,it’s a never ending cycle of in one door and out the other.I’m amazed by the lack of manufacturing in the UK,undoubtedly that was the beginning of a downward spiral for the Brits. The states tried and failed moving US manufacturing overseas, and a vast majority of it has returned to the states.Meanwhile China called, they want their money back. Both are nations are in a bloody mess, with fools and corrupt politicians at the helm

In the UK, because of our public health system and the benefits we pay, we are at great risk from inflation. Regardless of whether the government has taken in more tax revenue, if we are to be fair to civil servants and benefit claimants, we have to increase the pay and benefits in line with inflation. Therefore ANY UK government needs to have keep inflation very low as its primary aim. The moment that inflation exceeds the increased tax revenue from growth in the economy we are on a path to financial ruin. Are we prepared to make the sacrifices we need to get inflation under control? We might for example need to start charging capital gains tax on people's homes, so that they can't pay more for new home just because someone is paying them more for their home.

Martin Lewis is reminded that some the UK blind and severely disabled have not received any of their legally entitled incomes and support payments since the 2nd June 2022. This was the result of the collapse of the DWP payments systems at the post office for the most vulnerable in our society. This was inspite of warnings from parliament in January 2022THis is the biggest disaster for this government which has excluded his legal right to stand for reeliction in may. The charities have called for sunaks imprisonment and resignation which the law provides for. Martin be actuate. this group of people have not received any cost of living payments since 2022 confirmed by the DWP. The will not receive any cost of living payments in 2023-24 confirmed by the DWP, Michael Gove wants a parliamentary enquiry and group compensation scheme for those effected similar to the post office counters disaster. Kier starma wants a judicial enquiry. Jeremy Hunt MP is clearly misleading parliament and has to resign this week as he has breached the ministerial code. If he really wanted to help everyone he should cut VAT by 10%/15%. That is a tax cut that would make a real difference and would make people's money go a lot further and enable people to spend more and therefore grow our economy! You cannot trust the Tories to do anything other than enrich the already wealthy! 2% cut in NI does nothing to help anyone when utility bills have doubled. Everything has increased in price so the only cut should be VAT!

Except that almost our entire GDP is about consumer spending, because of the tax revenue it generates. VAT is one of the largest bits of the tax take after income tax. If we are to make changes to VAT then it probably needs to be more surgical - a thorough review of what VAT applies to at all, aiming to get a bunch of stuff entirely off the 'luxury items' list. Taxation is a balance of fairness vs arbitrary tithes. Tories always move towards the latter whilst pretending to be all about the former. That way, as people demand generically 'lower taxes' as things get more and more unfair they get to pick from their arbitrary hikes to make cuts that make people feel better but when looked at in the round always seem a bit insane. VAT on tampons? Lolwhut? Taxes on capital gains being lower than the lowest band of income tax? Lolwhut? Inheritance tax based on assets and council taxes based on property values... but thresholds & bands essentially *never* revised / refreshed / adjusted for inflation? Lolwhut? Large businesses paying basically no tax due to international HQ and tax-write off loopholes with small independent business paying 20%, in a perverse mirror of the way rich people basically pay no tax whilst the rest of us give up going on for half our earnings? Whilst the govt. insist they are the party of small businesses and working people? Lolwhut? Entire system is either fully crazy or entirely malicious. Fiddling with these little bits and pieces is not making decisions for long term stability. It all needs a very very thorough restructuring, root and branch.

@mrmeldrew693 you make it sound like people on benefits haven't ever worked or for disabled people like myself have a choice. I had a back injury at work and now as a result spend alot of time in bed, not by choice but unable to move or get out of it, the Internet is one of the only ways I get to see the outside world. I like many people paid a lot in taxes been self employed and an employer of workers but when I needed help it wasn't there for me, this is a fact that most people go through when in a similar position to myself. A lot of closed minded people that are ill educated on the subject think that people on benefits have never worked and the fact is that it is a very small fraction of people in this category. Yes you do pay NI on your benefits its well known that you do.

@mrmeldrew693 I agree with the jse, I found that aswell, it's a broken system in that respect. You find with the benefits system when you need to claim they are reluctant to help you, if you ask for help with training to train in your career field to enable you to work, they won't help. For me, I was too qualified to get any help when I needed it. Anyway, back on point, the system. Is setup not to help and to promote work, it always has been and that seems to be the situation your father had. My past experience is the same experience a lot of people are having with the system that's set up to not help you.

The triple lock is right and perfectly sustainable - but we do need to ensure that richer pensioners pay more tax. The best way to do this is to reduce the 40% tax threshold for over 65s by around 10k. Abolishing the triple lock will simply hurt lower and middle income pensioners.

The triple lock is unsustainable. Only 20% of pensioners are poor. 20% are wealthy. State handouts to the rich under the cover of caring for the poor will eventually exceed the whole of GDP. Support people according to their need, rather than their age. If the taxpaying workers have less disposable income then they will spend less which is then a drag on the economy. It can never be forgotten that money given to the wealthy is not spent. It is unavailable as it is taken out of circulation.

We have one of the lowest state pensions in Europe, and you want to make people poorer? Tory tax breaks for the wealthy corporations and individuals takes away money from ordinary people. We should be looking at increasing pensions and lowering the pension age to 60 instead of, all totally affordable if we had a fair tax system. Stop blaming the victims and make the wealthiest pay their fair share.

The triple lock provides some security for the large number of pensioners who are just above the level where pension credit is available.. not the absolute poorest in other words but far from wealthy. Also pension credit take-up is woeful. Wealth taxes are how to target the wealthy, if that's not too much of a tautology.
