Labour leadership contender Lisa Nandy had a heated debate with Piers Morgan this morning about whether transgender athletes should be able to compete. The debate follows transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard attempting to qualify for Tokyo as rules say if her testosterone is below certain levels for 12 months then she can compete. But is it fair on other athletes to let her compete and who should make those decisions?

I really don't like piers morgan, but i do agree with him on this. The examples he gave (which are not just outlandish hypotheticals, and in the case of the nz weight lifter is actually happening right now) ARE completely unfair and it's so frustrating that so many people are so terrified of being accused as transphobic that they tap dance around and twist themselves into pretzels to avoid giving THE OBVIOUS ANSWER. I don't know what the solution is, but to just shrug our shoulders and say "well that's just how it is now" is not acceptable.

This is a biological question. If you have gone through puberty as a man, you develop musculature different from a woman. Period. Full stop. Even if you take testosterone treatment, you have that advantage of development at puberty. So, no, obviously they shouldn't be able to compete. Now, if someone gets puberty blockers and hormone treatment to nullify that advantage, that's a different story. This has nothing to do with treatment of marginalized people with compassion and sensitivity. We're talking about athletic competition, a specific, organized activity based on physical reality. We in the United States have politicians, such as Katie Porter whom I like, not able to answer this question honestly. And I do believe it is because they are afraid of losing support as politicians.

Why can Ms Nandy not simply answer the question if it’s fair that a man identifying as a women should compete against women in a sport. There is no more broader issues to consider it’s a simple yes or no question. Of course she doesn’t think it’s fair but she is never going to admit that because most of her other points on transgender are going to be invalidated when she has to answer honestly.
