If the cost per unit to buy is 8-10 pence by the billing companies, how can they get away with charging 25p a unit??? We are been ripped off 2.5 times to 3 times the cost. Rip off Britain
@Longlostpuss8 күн бұрын
It's not the billing companies who are actually buying the fuel though is it? Besides that, like any other product, there is a wholesale and a retail price. Just because it costs 8-10 pence to buy wholesale energy, by the time you add in the costs of maintenance for power stations, fuel lines and the service for the companies who bill you, this has to be reflected somewhere in the final rates charged. You need to understand what a gross rate is and a net rate, everyone still has to be paid to do a job in the process of receiving your energy. Now the real argument for me comes with the standing charges first, not the rates. The standing charges are the part that I think is questionable, because the rates already technically encompass all the expenses, so in effect the standing charge is charging everyone all over again.

@jamesbarbour84007 күн бұрын
@@Longlostpuss supposedly the standing charge is to pay for maintenance of the network, whether that be water, gas or electric. Very soon, we'll be paying even more, to cover the costs/fines levied on water suppliers who let sewage into the clean water system ie rivers and the like. They certainly won't be paying said fines out of their own pockets - we'll be the ones on the hook for that ! Basically, the money that was supposed to be channelled towards network upkeep, and prevent instances of untreated sewage entering the clean water system, has gone towards either the CEO's own pockets and/or to shareholders !

lets not forget that when the financial crisis happened, created by the same banks who had made these bank charges the government made it so you couldn't claim anymore, lots of banks just held out waiting and didn't have to pay the money back. we are still suffering from that crisis and greed.

Energy companies should all be removed from the market. They're just intermediary businesses buying wholesale energy from the generation companies. It makes energy more expensive for the consumer before you. It needs total reform for the new age of dynamic pricing. And all incentives scrapped as well. Make sure that the generation companies have to compete to sell the energy rather than getting cushy deals that protect them rather than the consumer.

"Injustice by design" that's one heck of a powerful quote, and you can relate it to so many aspects of society nowadays. Everything Martin Lewis says here should be a big part of the curriculum in business schools. Maybe then things won't be so fucked and crooked, especially when people need those services the most like during Winter. For example, taking away the Winter fuel allowance from British elderly whilst giving shit loads of money to illegal immigrants is not good practise and will have a lasting imprint of distrust towards energy companies and government. FFS that's vile. Another example is that illegal immigrants get more support than British homeless. "Caring should start at home".

The problem as I see it though... I never would trust a corporation anyway because their job is literally to make as much profit for their shareholders as they can. We have two systems to protect the public from the energy companies price gouging; Westminster and Ofgem. Where the system is falling down is, our parliament is full of bought and paid for MP's and the same with Ofgem. They are both shielding and supporting the energy companies not the consumers. Together they have - sold off our North Sea gas - removed our gas storage facilities - added a "Green Tax" on our energy bills literally to give energy companies so they can make MORE money. (Imagine the government forcing a 3% tax on Amazon to help them build a warehouse!!) - failed to create new nuclear power stations to safeguard our supply - instead of forcing the energy companies to lower their prices, the government threw our tax payer money at them "to bail us out!!" - and you have Ofgem literally whipping the energy prices up every winter when everyone needs it and bringing them down in the summer - even our wind and solar power is contracted abroad with high tariffs agreed at the onset, Danish, Swedish, German, Norwegian. Nobody in power is looking after the people anymore, its all about corporate greed and greedy politicians trying to line their nests. The whole lot are disgusting.

I feel I was forcibly sold an endowment mortgage when I really favoured a repayment mortgage but I was young and naive and really regret not putting my foot down! Why was this a thing? Did many others have the same experience as me (in the early 90s)? Is there a way of addressing this? In all honesty I can’t recall if it was NatWest themselves or an independent mortgage advisor who put the pressure on, possibly the latter.

You can't market trust. It only comes from being trustworthy. The same is true of respect. You can't demand respect without initially showing it first.A salutory lesson in many sociocultural areas.

That is exactly what the Labor Party looks like right now. They claim they need to restore trust and boost the economy, but when we examine their track record, they are doing the exact opposite. Trust cannot be marketed; it must be earned.

if a company is makeing record profits but raising the prices its greed pure and simple and the governments are supporting them instaed of holding them to acount. we know we are being screwed by the gas and electricity companys but we are doing nothing about it. we should be contacting our MP and haveing huge sit ins infrount of number 10. if we do nothing then we are partialy responsable.

I was persuaded to install solar then within the year the unit price dropped and standing charge soared. This limits how much i can save with my panels. Currently projecting break even in 2048, without incorporating the price of replacement batteries in ten years.

Ofgem and the energy companies do not care about people who are disabled or are struggling. None including Ofgem have done their s149 EQA 2010 PSED duty. Simple things like meter reading (smart meters are not the answer due to drop outs in information transfer) on a regular basis so that huge surpluses or debts occur. Sending bills in both electronic and paper formats is an impossibility for these companies. Refunds if you account is in significant credit becomes subject to company policy. The government and energy companies don't care about vulnerable people and government won't. They are as bad.

Politicians are incredible when it comes to trust. They totally believe what they say and listen to from a microscopic number of people some in their own minds. 1.5million homes in 5 years….. so that’s 1 house every 2 minutes without a break for 5 years. And they all believe it. 5% cut in government spending? That’s £60 Billion quid or 19 Trillion paperclips to stop using.

Its all well and good going for these energy companies & politicians or what have you, but I also think the problem lies within the financial ignorance of the general public. I find it quite scary the amount of people who don't know what a pension is or even where their pension is held, or billions of pounds being parked in current accounts accumulating absolutely no interest. I understand public schools failed us in this regard but people could live way less miserable lives if they just took a bit of time to become somewhat financially literate

The issue with majority of Britains, would rather spend their money on quick fixes or waste their money on subscription based services or finance things for the short term, which over the year builds up and reduces their monthly income quite a bit. Instead of looking to invest their money for the long term, our future. We would find ourselves free from these systems that are designed to screw us. It’s hard short to do this because you don’t feel the benefits straight away. Lockdown screwed me, made redundant, no UC or furlough funding, wiped my savings out keeping on top of things, made me realise I need to change my attitude. Now I don’t get things on tick, I invest into long term investments, I’ve cleared that debt by cutting all luxuries. Otherwise I know, I know I won’t be able to survive in the future with costs going up and salaries staying as they are.
