"I've Been to the Mountaintop" is the last speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr.
King spoke on April 3, 1968, at the Mason Temple (Church of God in Christ Headquarters) in Memphis, Tennessee. On the following day, King was assassinated.
The speech primarily concerns the Memphis Sanitation Strike. King calls for unity, economic actions, boycotts, and nonviolent protest, while challenging the United States to live up to its ideals. At the end of the speech, he discusses the possibility of an untimely death.

I like to think he really did speak to God. And was told that he was going to be killed. But if he was brave and stood tall he would be welcome into heaven and his legacy and impact would affect millions to come. I like to think he knew and wasnt scared, knowing it was god's plan.

All we say to America is, "Be true to what you said on paper." If I lived in China or even Russia, or any totalitarian country, maybe I could understand some of these illegal injunctions. Maybe I could understand the denial of certain basic first amendment privileges because they had not committed themselves to that over there. But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest And so just as I say, we aren't going to let dogs or water hoses turn us around, we aren't going to let any injunction turn us around... Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land! And so I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

“Mine eyes have seen coming of Lord!” Is possibly what makes this one of the best speeches in American History. This whole speech is brilliantly framed within the heart of the American project and purpose. And to end it with the opening line of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, a song about the Union’s sacred mission, with later lines like: “as [Jesus] died to make men holy, let us die to make men free” Absolute masterclass in tying religious metaphors like deliverance, with the very core of the goal of the American national purpose.

😢 He was not fearless exactly 💯 but I do know what you mean when you say he was. He was conquering the fear we all naturally have. He spoke to fear in this speech and basically was telling it I'm coming through you! He decided 'DESPITE' FEAR DANGER RACISM, EVIL & IGNORANT PEOPLE & THEIR MANY PLOTS against his life he still preached on, marched on, ran on, towards the high mark of his calling, vision & goals. Martin Luther King was on an assignment from his heavenly father and he knew that when he left this world he would be with him. He understood he had one life to give. He stated that he would die for his people to have equality and a better life in a previous speech 💬. I just hate that there were cruel racist cowards that took him up on the offer and used a sniper hidden in the building like the dirty rat 🐀 he was to aim at and unarmed man and murder him in cold 🥶 🩸 blood. Then blame James Earl Ray - now that's real 😨 fear And how inhumane! We all are here on my assignment. Martin Luther King aced his, like so many times he skipped grades and 🎓 graduated HS early - he skipped old age/ more time on earth 🌍 to a new assignment with God. 😊

This speech, being MLK's last one, always haunts me. I think he knew he didn't have long for this world. He says he had "been to the Mountaintop!" Whether it was the KKK or the CIA or a conspiracy of both, sadly, MLK knew his words were "dangerous." He sadly knew his life was at risk before that fateful day at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. But he kept on with his speech, and he was as strong willed as ever. Sadly, Martin Luther King, Jr. didn't "get there with us." But spiritually, he did. His story has more or less left a big impact on my life, living in Atlanta now (the place of his birth) and having lived in Memphis were he was sadly gunned down. MLK stood for what he believed was right, even if it cost him his life.

As an activist reaching the end of my own life, I remember this speech and the events of that week -- I was a child, but my father worked night security for the SCLC summer marches, and was a minister. That week changed my life. And this speech helps me reach peace with what I've been able to accomplish, but still makes me question the state of the world. It's a constant balance, isn't it? Between that which people do as the real "social justice warriors" (a title that shouldn't be so tarnished), and those who are not true to what we said on paper.

@@johne.chalco4134 The story of this world run by devils, deceivers, is going to end how it started. It started with God bringing his people out of a Egypt with a mighty hand. These same people were taken back into slavery one last time. “And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them. So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward. And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name; after that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid. When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations; then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.” ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭39:21-29‬ ‭KJV‬‬ .
