The most emotive and beautiful film Kubrick ever made. I love Dr. Strangelove and for a long time that was my favorite Kubrick film but Barry Lyndon is undoubtedly his greatest esthetic achievement. An emotional, optical, and cerebral masterpiece; a film for the heart, eyes, and mind. Such a feat can only be achieved by very few filmmakers.

The people who don't like "Barry Lyndon" who I've come across, inevitably don't understand that it's a black comedy. It's Kubrick's *funniest* movie AND his most concise thesis on the absurdity of the human condition. It's not meant to be taken as if it's some deadly serious historical drama.
@JingleJangleJam
@JingleJangleJam 4 ай бұрын
The narration has an almost enlightened, encyclopaedic feel, as though the film were being narrated to you by Denis Diderot, who invented the satire. I wouldn't call this comedy so much as satire, in the exact same vein as Diderot or Voltaire, while maintaining throughout the sense of humanist irony it has undertones of tragedy, because tragedy and comedy can be closely intertwined as since Greek times comedy evolved from the use of tragedy first but was considered the more difficult form to master, like when Diderot proclaims moral virtues to be vanity as a means to conform to the expectations of aristocratic society in his novella Rameau's Nephew; ''So long live philosophy, long live the wisdom of Solomon. Drink good wine, gorge oneself on choice delicacies, roll around on beautiful women, lie on lovely soft beds. Other than that, the rest is nothing but vanity. ME: What about defending one's country? HIM: That's vanity. There's no country any more. From one pole to the other all I see is tyrants and slaves. ME: Helping one's friends? HIM: Vanity. Does one really have friends? And if we had, would we have to make them ungrateful? Look closely, and you'll notice that that's almost always what you get back for services rendered. Gratitude is a burden, and every burden is put there to be shaken off. ME: Occupy a position in society and carry out its duties? HIM: Vanity. What does it matter whether one has a position or not, provided that one is rich, since no one assumes a position except to get rich? Carry out its duties--where does that lead? To jealousy, trouble, persecution. Is that the way one gets ahead? Pay court to people, by God, pay court to them. Observe great people, study their tastes, take part in their fantasies, serve their vices, applaud their injustices. That's the secret.'' gutenberg.net.au/ebooks07/0700101h.html I appreciate the work and lengths Kubrick went to to make the writing of the film in the same vein as the Enlightenment satire style, which parodies the theatricality of courtly life.

@JingleJangleJam

@@fmellish71 Interesting, I see that Thackeray wrote ''Vanity Fair''; so as satire involved when people's masks come off, our mask is a social role for our vanity. There are no heroes just as in like Rameau's nephew's point of view. I will have a look at Thackeray, thanks.

I think most people don't get the humour in Kubrick films, other than Dr. Strangelove which is widely considered his funniest film and one of the best comedies of all time, A Clockwork Orange is also classified as a black comedy by some, and let's admit it, probably most of us laughed watching Full Metal Jacket, especially when Sgt. Hartmann yelled all those words.

I remember being a kid, middle school, and I caught the ending late night on HBO. I watched the duel scene and I didn’t know what the tone of the film was supposed to be. It was obviously a dramatic scene. But it was like a novel. I had watched Clockwork Orange as I was hooked on weird VHs movies from a small local video store that carried the Faces of Death and let me rent them. Next I rented 2001: 0:58 space odyssey and at 12-13 years old (in the mid 90s) didn’t get it, but I knew it was good.

Barry Lyndon is so underrated. The technical barriers that were broken to get those images are incredibly moving. It’s truly insane the heights Kubrick reached to between 1968 and 1980 specifically for me. 2001, Lyndon, Clockwork and the Shining were all breaking the rules to filmmaking in such a unique way and all in their own way. Thanks to the two modern masters at their craft for the opinion on this astonishing movie that is free on KZbin. I recommend highly. Best cinematography ever next to Winston C Hochs “big three” (Yellow Ribbon, quiet man, Searchers).

Barry Lyndon's stock has certainly risen since its initial release. It gets mentioned far more often now than it used to. I've always liked the film and maintained a copy, but it was never a "go-to" film for me - still, it is a highly unusual film, particularly considering it comes right after Clockwork Orange, a dystopic social satire that couldn't be more different in style and tone, yet like Lyndon, concerns the adventures of a young man of humble origins "seeking" his fortune and place in the world.

Even more ironic when you consider the fact that Kubrick was gaining a reputation as a "futurist" prior to Barry Lyndon, since his previous two films were both set in the future. A Georgian era costume drama is probably the last thing audiences were expecting.

Barry Lyndon is overhyped. Among other things, it comes on as a character study packaged within a period epic, but critically fails as a character study, as it offers no real examination of the eponymous protag's desires or internal conflicts, because it lacks sufficient scenes that penetrate the characterial surface. This evidently is replaced by voiceover narrator, and this only reinforces the superficiality of the story presentation. Any conclusions as to the protag's depth have to be drawn from the viewers' interpretation, but there is not enough provided in any significant way to arrive at any conclusion other than barely two-dimensional and banal. I came away from this film asking "So what?"; it did not engage, intrigue, or challenge my sensibilities. The protag is not much more than a shallow miscreant in a story with no meaningful thematic conflict.
