Hearing Martin’s early life story feels exhausting and leaves you with a feeling of almost hopelessness despite the success he had with Taxi Driver and Raging Bull- but that feeling is offset by the inspiration and tenacity he had to keep going in the face of constant obstacles and failures with personal relationships and the studios.

I am a 23 year old Italian cinephile and Martin Scorsese is one of my favorite directors. I am extremely grateful to you for this masterful work you have done, not only from a cinematographic point of view but also from a linguistic point of view: narrating voice and subtitles are perfect (except for rare typos) and extremely useful for someone like me who does not speak English well. The details make the difference: terrific work! I also thank you further because numerous important essays on Scorsese have never been translated into Italian: in this sense, the cultural contribution you have made is immense for many of us. Such content is very rare on KZbin. You have talked about one of the greatest artists of all time in such a precise and splendid way that your documentary-homage is somehow pure art itself. I run to see the second part. I hope you can accomplish something like that in the future on Steven Spielberg and Billy Wilder. THANKS THANKS THANKS P.S. Long life to the seventh art and long life to the movie theater, the only place where Cinema is Cinema. Streaming is undoubtedly comfortable but the magic of the movie theater is unmatched.

I'd heard that fact about Springsteen and Taxi Driver's "you talking to me" line before but it's good to have it confirmed here. De Niro and Scorsese had both seen Springsteen perform very recently and the line just popped in to De Niro's head. The three of them are fans of each others and friends half a century later.

I am really impressed with your documentaries. I appreciate it when a love for the subject and their work can be felt. I really appreciate it when one sticks to the facts without too much editorializing. I think you have achieved both. I was curious about the remark that De Niro was critical of Cybil Shepherd's acting and refused to work with her ever again since I had never heard this before. An online article had a different take and I thought I'd mention it to give another side. The article claimed that De Niro had asked Shepherd out and she had declined since she was with Bogdonavich. This made for some awkwardness and hard feelings.

Makes sense, Scorsese's movies have a stitched together quality - like sometimes he wants you to see the joins in the editing, like editing in it self is a work of art that he wants to draw attention to. For most directors editing is a craft that should go without notice, but Scorsese always reminds the audience they are watching a film, never wants the audience to totally get lost inside the movie. And considering his background, you see where he gets his tailoring skills from.
