Martin Shkreli on Drug Price Hikes and Playing the World’s Villain

Martin Shkreli is a 32-year-old entrepreneur and company builder. A modern day Horatio Alger story, Shkreli grew up the son of two janitors in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, hustled his way into the hedge fund game, and is now worth at least $45 million. Although he made his money betting against the pharmaceutical industry, Shkreli switched to running a drug company in 2012.
In August of last year, one of his companies acquired the rights to a drug that treats an infection that effects in people with AIDS and other immunodeficiencies.
Over night, the price per pill rose by more than 5000 percent and Shkreli became the poster child for capitalistic greed.
Shkreli ran with the bad-boy image, flaunting his trollish behaviour in the media, He's not your typical pharma tycoon anyways. Over the past year he's also funded an indie record label, claimed he would bail Bobby Shmurda out of jail, and purchased the singular copy of a legendary Wu-Tang Clan album … with no immediate plans to even play it.
In December, Shkreli was indicted on securities fraud charges and is now under investigation by Congress and the Federal Trade Commission for price gouging… so his time in the spotlight is not over yet.
VICE caught up with him at his midtown apartment to meet the man behind the headlines.

+derty.QWERTY42°N you say that but he is highly skilled in making money. Makes 10s of millions a year do you make that? If we were in his situation we would all raise the price to make profits. That's business. I dont like what he did but that's life.

+Watermelon Pinecone "If we were in his situation we would all raise the price to make profits." Not everybody is a greedy, capitalist thug leeching off the desperation of sick people. Example: Jonas Salk, the creator of the polio vaccine. He refused to patent it and make money off of it, instead letting others mass produce the vaccine and stop one of the scariest diseases of the last century.

Shkreli seems to be all about power and weakness, that's the impression I get from this interview. I don't think his main motivation is helping people, I think its obtaining and wielding power. He likes the power he has over people. I think he bought that wu tang album because he would have something that was out of reach to everyone else, and his comments about it at the end show how he relishes that power, dangling something for people to beg for. He smirks and inflates when the interviewer says she's never heard of the chess move he mentions, and he seems to revel in her lack of chess skill, repeatedly pointing out how bad she is and oh-so-casually pointing out exactly how she is losing and how he is winning. To me he seems awkward, he constantly fidgets, contorts his body into strange positions, doesn't make eye contact for long periods of time, is visibly uncomfortable at times, even asking "is it hot in here?". I would be shocked if he was bullied when he was younger, and he basically says as much (unnecessarily) in the beginning, and it clearly affected him alot; he says he still remembers the names of the people who picked on him. I think he felt weak and worthless, and now he wants to wield as much power as possible.
@Emotionfullboy
@Emotionfullboy 7 жыл бұрын
yeah, seemed to me the same way. He is known for his "trolling" how the internet likes to say it. He recently stated that he was about to invest in magic the gathering cards, making huge price spikes. The whole community freaked out and was so scared. In the end he just likes to feel the reactions of his actions. Knowing that he could do it and know that people would, in one way or the other, care. People are discussing the very surface of his personallity. If he is "good" or "evil". If he wants to help or just make profit. I mean beneath any action lies a deep inner motivation. Nobody just seeks to get money just to have money. Money represents power, or possibillities, or fame or whatever. Every motivation comes from a longing for acceptance or approval, just sometimes these motivations just completely turn around and become the opposite. This mostly happens when a person has been deeply hurt. Through loss, disappointment, abondenment...stuff like this
@CrazedGin
@CrazedGin 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think he likes power, because he had a major lack of it earlier in his life. But I don't think he abuses his power to take advantage of the people under his power. I think he's trying to use his power to stop the people who abuse power. You mentioned the chess game, well he is clearly an intelligent man and clearly knows it himself. I don't think it has anything to do with him holding power over her, he just has an inflated ego. What he is doing, is making a statement against the actual problem. Drug companies hold major power over the people, releasing dangerous and overpriced drugs, forcing the people to fork out loads just to survive. Even though the drugs are harmful themselves. Like he said, the companies don't care to do research on creating new, less harmful drugs. He basically did the same thing that the other companies already do, just on a grander scale to draw attention to the problem at hand. He realizes that the drug is one that doesn't affect a large number of people. I highly doubt he would have done the same for a highly used drug. He is no bully, he is the one trying to stop the bullying. And regarding his body language, yes, he is clearly socially awkward. The man probably has major anxiety and insecurity issues. His earlier life was probably rough on him and I wouldn't be surprised if he had a mental illness.

You make a good point, however it seems you, yourself have never interacted with an awkward/ socially inept person (according to societies standards). These attributes he has, that you say could be the cause of past trauma/ bullying, is just simply his own personality. To be frank, yet not rude, many highly intellectual people show body language and talk such as he does (Professors, "Nerds"). These are common attributes I have noticed growing up throughout high school and College, and asking help with homework from people like him. Everyone has their different personalities, and I completely believe what he is doing is 100% just. Big corporations kill people's wallets and people themselves. I work at a Bank, and I can see these greedy behaviors everyday; his is definitely not one of them.
@CrazedGin

Reedan Abid I am a socially inept person. Yes, you are right that he could just naturally be that way, although most people who are socially awkward experience ridicule in their life. But no matter if he is naturally awkward or it has been caused by his past, he still struggles with some self-esteem issues. Take for example how he sits curled up. This is in an effort to make himself seem small and less likely to be noticed and judged. In comparison to someone confident who sits open and ready to be noticed. There is a good ted talks video on the subject of body language. I felt he was probably bullied in his past due to how he spoke of his past. Also, those people you spoke of that you have met that acted similar ways, also probably experienced ridicule themselves, although maybe not by you.

It is required by law for public and private insurances to cover it, regardless of cost (as long as the company can justify the cost). The cost of any drug that old is easily justifiable under the law: we need to raise prices to fund research for a new, less harmful, more effective drug. The drug in question is ridiculously harmful to patients.

But it’s whether or not that drug can be applied to the situation you’re in, which is the job of the person prescribing it, (who is being told to overprescribe “this one drug” in favor of the finances for that company making that drug)

So this is an example of the Big corporate media and how they influence the narrative. I am sure you seen the Headline or even Hilary Clinton say Martin Shkrali raises price of AIDs Medicine, price gouging" So this is what they fail to mention. Martin yes raised the price of an AIDs Medicine from $13 to $700 per pill. However he offered the Medication for free if you made 500% below the Federal Poverty line and you did not have insurance. Too, I think most people who have come here and commented understand the general situation with this douchebag perfectly well...the ones who don't understand seem to be the ones defending this POS. Finally....internet lynch mob justice...true dat. But not everyone is innocent, and this guy seems to be a fatal combination of autistic/Aspy plus rich plus an asshole. The first two put a person at a social disadvantage...but the presence of the first two doesn't preclude the effect that the third factor has on the overall picture. Put another way, you can be a misunderstood genius mistaken for an asshole..but you can also be a misunderstood genius who is ALSO an asshole.

While people have gone a little overboard in demonizing him (He's a piece of shit sure, but the whole pharmaceutical industry is shady so...), there are plenty of complete morons ALSO defending him because pharma is the devil and its all a conspiracy. Diseases aren't real!Uh. I work in the medical field...and like with anything, there's a counterculture [resent where uneducated conspiracy theorists spread misinformation on topics they know nothing about. Some jackass down there said HIV isn't real. That's what I mean. Shreli brings up some good points, but it's awfully easy to play your superior moral position while you're monopolizing medicines and making boku amounts of money on it just like the companies you're criticizing.

You're so much better than us why don't you educate us. Maybe also teach us how to be a patronizing, self-important douche bag. I'll trust his word before any journalist's word any day. How many people accused of crimes do you see actively going out there and giving their point of view? None, they all hide and lay low for the rest of their lives. He's actually going out there and telling his story, giving facts and opinions, showing that he's a real human by genuinely acting like one, where as everyone else is just using biases and fallacies to demonize him by calling him bad names (like you) instead of giving facts or arguments with real substance. I've yet to see anyone who dislikes him give ONE reason why I should dislike him, let alone a VALID one. Yet people who do like him almost always give a valid reason for it. Tell me what he's doing bad, if you're so knowledgeable on the subject (and link sources, since you've done such extensive research on this). You can't because you're weak minded, that's why you just ride the popular opinion. And why do you dislike Trump. Because the media told you to? Do you even have a real opinion or do you just ride the popular opinion and look down on everyone else who doesn't. Those were two rhetorical questions. You're so full of yourself about it too, it's fucking hilarious, ignorant people like you are why my default position is the underdog, because the popular opinion is for the unintelligent who don't have the ability to question themselves or anything they encounter. Prove me you're not just another KZbin social media imbecile by stating 1 unpopular opinion you actually have, and I'll actually reply to you. Otherwise, you prove me right and not only do I win, but rightfully humiliate you doing so.

So, I'm guessing that all your rage comes from the fact that I said that about Trump, well, since I'm not going to spend hours trying to explain myself to someone that insulted me right off the bat, I'm just gonna leave this link here "www.forbes.com/sites/brucelee/2015/12/16/why-martin-shkrelis-price-hike-may-hurt-everyone-including-you-and-the-pharmaceutical-industry/#39229b8f7829" Its a small but to-the-point article and you can find all the sources they used right there. yep thats his point exactly. do you think if Pfizer or Bayer had done this the common person would have ever heard about it? I don't think so, personally.

Because drugs cost money to make. Like a lot of money. No one is making the drug without out incentive to make profit.

Watching this interview is scary. He's got that mentality that he wants to help people but he's gonna make you pay big time. He's one of those people that have gone so far down the rabbit hole of being wealthy that he doesn't understand that there are people out there that can't afford heath care and to pay out of pocket for these drugs. He wants to screw over the corporations buying his drugs but doesn't see the effects of his actions. He's the worst kind of person who doesn't think of the repercussions of his actions. It seems like he's not completely evil but he just doesn't think nor care about the long term effects of his actions.

Idk man, when I first read about this guy, i was pretty disgusted as I feel most people were at the time. And his rampage on Twitter didn't help either. But after doing my research, it seems like he at least has a reason for doing so and is more importantly trying to facilitate those people who can't afford that 750$ price tag. I personally dont like big pharma. I think when you turn medical needs into business assets, it disregards the people who actually need it. I just hope the patients are actually getting the help they need. That's my biggest worry.
