@@noertdk9228 that’s not totally true. The first thing out of his mouth was that healthcare prices were inelastic - his whole game was taking advantage of misaligned pricing incentives in healthcare. You can say he was telling you how big pharma/healthcare industry wealth is being created by dirty actors, but healthcare is already an extremely misaligned industry as we all know. THe people in the video dont know how to act when he leans into the role of villain which also happens to include him laying out the truth of capitalism and what being a ceo means. They live their lives pretending to write "news stories" and defending capitalism and playing a long with all the things evil corporations do, as long as they throw them a bone by making some sort of token gesture in the form of some excuse of plausible deniability. But Shkreli is a piece of shit and completely comfortable with it and they are all at a loss lol. An actual caring honest person would talk about our legal corporate structure is fucked.

@jasonvan4370
@jasonvan4370 7 жыл бұрын
Uh I don't think you understand. Just because you're a CEO, doesn't mean you have to raise prices that much. For instance, Elon Musk. His company makes 25% profit on each car and Tesla is doing WAY better in the market compared to this pharmaceutical company. They have a motive and want to help the environment as well as the people. The stock market share is at $230. Just because you're a CEO, doesn't mean all you do is raise prices.
@jasonvan4370
@jasonvan4370 7 жыл бұрын
And pharmaceutical companies rely on insurance companies to pay the high price, although some of those insurance won't pay for them. You expect someone to pay that much out of pocket? They won't rely on government funding for long, only the first 200k vehicles sold. Every automotive company relies on government funding.

@joemobumtwizzler The whole idea is that NO ONE should ever be in a situation where they cant afford their medications. The fact that many lives are dependent on a single man, proves that system does NOT work. Every man, woman, child, rich and poor should not worry about medication, cause that is a responsibility of every citizen, hence the government. So NO that would not change my attitude nor my mind.
@nixtoshi
@nixtoshi 3 жыл бұрын
@@RezaAP The medicine industry is very stunted, slow and inefficient because it's highly regulated and because there is a public perception that successful private research should immediately be a right to everyone. You should change the way you think. You achieve way more innovation, access and better health by deregulation of profit-driven companies and individuals. That's how computers have gone from costing millions of dollars and being the size of floors in a building to costing $10 or less and fitting in your pocket, or on a ring. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, IBM, etc. run very capitalistic companies driven by profit, and they have created all this innovation, Google, KZbin, the chip makers, keyboard and screen you are typing on are the result of a free unregulated and profit driven market. The status quo actually kills a lot of people that didn't have to die if the medicine market worked more freely, because there would be more medical innovations, more competitors, and cheaper access. A lot of illnesses that people currently die of would have been cured already. We have already found certain genes that can be erased from the human genome to prevent a lot of types of cancer and HIV, but currently, everywhere in the world, human genetic modification is ilegal, but we could already be having newborns that are immune to several types of cancer and aids. Right now this innovation is very expensive and has to be done in the black market, at the risk of multi-year prison sentences and high fines and public uproar.

@@jasonvan4370 A bit late, but the tesla comparison isnt really a good one. For Tesla, they get the most profits the more people drive their cars. It aligns perfectly with their enviormental desires, but also their financial desires. Practically everybody who is driving, or is going to be driving in the future is a potential customer for Tesla, therefor if they make their product expensive and exclusive, they wont reach their goals. For medicine it is totally different, ofcourse you wouldn't want half of the world to be on HIV medication. The fact that Tesla is doing way better than a pharmaceutical company should be a no brainer, it is comparing apples to oranges. Yes they both seek profits at the end of the day, just like any other commercial company, and the way for a pharmaceutical company to do that is make as much money as you can, so you can research better drugs (atleast in shkreli's case). Yea sure, just cause you're a CEO doesn't mean all you do is raise prises, but sometimes it is.

He bought a government patent and set a monopoly price. From what i hear that's pretty much all his company was set up to do. But that's socialism. Not capitalism. Capitalism is Imprimus pharmaceuticals selling an almost identical drug for close to $1 a pill, and they did it soon after this story first broke. And Shkreli is a democrat. He wanted to donate money to the party but they refused because they didn't want the bad press.

"I am not a destroyer of companies. I am a liberator of them! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much." - Gordon Gecko, Wall Street 1987

See, Americans have this black and white mentality when it comes to politics, that if you impose the slightest regulation to capitalism to make it more humane, it automatically becomes Stalinism or something. This has come through years of systematic anti-communist propaganda. In reality, no country has true capitalism, and thank god for that, even though the U.S. is dangerously close. Reasonable people apply the best of both systems.

Radical Vlad mate, I'm living the things you are claiming are impossible. I live in a capitalist country with free education and healthcare for all, and you're sitting there talking to me about utopias. What demise of the European worker? The average Dane works 37 hours a week, and gets double the holidays of Americans. He gets money from the state to study, even if the uni has no tuition and has free health care. He gets taxed a lot though. Is that socialism? I would much rather live there than the States.

This isn't capitalism he's talking about, it's corporatism. These companies get unfair advantages in the market because they lobby to our government, which in turn passes laws and regulations that undermine the competition -- however the government claims these regulations and laws are there to REGULATE big business but this is never the case. Once these companies get majority shares in the market by undermining all competition, they can charge whatever they want because they are in full control and people can either pay the price or do without. This practice sadly has infiltrated our health care industry as well, and despite government reforms and the new health care act which we were told was suppose to "remedy" our health care situation only made it worse. Higher prices, worse services, less choices, and no competition..... This is the exact opposite of capitalism. America hasn't had capitalism in over 100 years, we have Corporatism.

Look, he's only doing what every single Pharmaceutical company has and will continue to do. He played within the rules the Pharma companies wrote and gave to Congress to approve. What do you think patent extensions are? What about drug import bans? How about delaying generic approval? This game was here long before Shkreli, if anything, he brought much unwanted publicity to the whole situation.
