Back in the early 80's, I wrote a fan letter to Marty congratulating him when he landed the gig on SNL I mentioned how much I admired his genius work on SCTV and that I had even tuned into an appearance he made on a Canadian game show where he cracked me up. I said "Now that's loyalty." Anyway a few weeks later during an SNL sketch, he looked directly into the camera and said "Now that's loyalty." I will never know if that was a mere coincidence or if he was acknowledging my fan letter.

I remember after two or three years straight when Rush percussionist Neil Peart had the big tragedy of losing his wife and daughter all within a few months, he quit the band and just went on a long road trip on his motorcycle. I remember getting worried that the band was never going to get back together so I wrote a letter addressed to Neil Peart care of Ray Daniels of the anthem records studio production in Toronto Canada - asking them if they ever could do it, please put this in Neil's mail bag maybe he'll read it someday I wrote yes - we all know that tragedy takes a long time for us to deal with it and it can keep us depressed. But a lot of times it is best to get back to doing what you love to do the best. If you get back to work something you love to do, that will help you recover. And sure enough just a few months later we heard news that Rush was back together in the studio getting ready to record what would eventually be the album Vapor Trails. A full 5 years after their last release and tour. So I kind of thought to myself I wonder if he actually did read my letter and think that you know this person might be right if I don't go back to work and do what I love doing, how am I ever going to give myself a chance to heal and get back to somewhat normal. And of course years later he found a new wife and even had more children. This all happened way back in the early 2000s.

He's so fast on the draw. That hasn't slowed with age at all, but now he has more experience and back stories to add to the mix. I never see him get rattled in the back and forth or lose the upper hand. Sort of like Don Rickels in that regard. You absolutely did not want him starting in on you and certainly did not want to go tit for tat once he did. I miss Don.

One night Martin Short walked into my friend's bar in Toronto in the mid-8O's. I happened to have a box of brownies and I offered him one. He took one, took a bite and started doing the Ed Grimley dance. A moment I won't forget. No single person has made me laugh more than Martin Short. From Second City to Jiminy Glick, his characters are hilarious and his comedy is timeless. I highly recommend him to all the kids!

I love Martin Short, sorta grew up with him, but I grew up in the late 80s, 90s. Three Amigos, Inner Space. He is just naturally funny, but at the same time he's very natural and genuine. A true professional. Of course I like Bill..thanks for having him as your guest.

Bill, I was 6 years old when John F. Kennedy was shot. We were sent home from school immediately ! I lived in Ottawa, Canada at the time! Yes the news reached Canada and it was one of the most viviid memories of my childhood. When I got home my father was sitting with his face in his hands crying. Big moment in C a n a d a !

Can Maher speak for longer than 20 minutes without raising subject of "trans"~or capable of a conversation without the word "woke"?🥱🥱🥱..Can someone tell Maher "woke" is now OLD news. Either keep up... or stop complaining people treat him like an old "grandpa" (without children)- *include this in his [unnecessary] defensive speeches on THAT issue.(No one gives a sh*t he is an older man/ never married/no kids...wouldn't in fact even notice if he didn't keep bringing it up???) .😉🤭.

I think I'm addicted to Club Random. Great guests (Martin Short this time) and Bill Maher's discourse. Never a dull moment. I'm 70, and especially love to hear Bill's take on how the world has changed, and then asking his guests to respond. I loved Politically Incorrect and now this podcast. Thank you Bill. Can't wait to see who will be next to sit in the hot seat. BTW, loved the Donald Trump story where he sued you for saying his mother was an orangutan, and him bringing a birth certificate to prove you wrong. Unbelievable! And I learned a new expression from you: Not my monkey, not my circus." I LOVE it!

There are very few people who are just funny being themselves. Martin really doesn't have to do much except a facial expression or body movement and it's funny. Bill Murray was another where funny is just part of their DNA. This was my favorite Club Random. BTW, Freddie Prinze was 22 when he died.

I've noticed the episodes are almost all around 2 hours lately, compared to a few months ago where could kind of judge how good guest would be by the duration. I think has cut things down to just one guest per day of filming, or maybe it's just been how good the guests have been recently.

I had the high honor of interviewing Marty Short and he was everything u would want him to be..sharp as a tack, engaged, and of course funny as hell. Arguably the greatest Canadian comedic export since John Candy...& greatest comedic talk show guest ever (Rickles/Rodney notwithstanding) PS, Freddie died at 23, James Dean 24.
