CAUGHT IN COCO COUNTY LOCATION MARTINEZ.
On February 1, 2025, at approximately 1:40 p.m., a significant fire erupted at the Martinez Refining Company in Martinez, California. Contra Costa County Fire Protection District received multiple emergency calls reporting the incident. Upon arrival, firefighters found a portion of the refinery engulfed in flames. The blaze resulted in injuries to at least six individuals: two were treated on-site and released, while four others were transported to local hospitals, with one remaining under medical supervision.
In response to the fire and the accompanying smoke, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in parts of Martinez and Pacheco. Residents were advised to stay indoors, close all windows and doors, and turn off ventilation systems to minimize exposure to potentially hazardous smoke. This advisory was lifted later in the evening as the situation improved.
A unified command was established to manage the incident, comprising the Martinez Refining Company, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, and the City of Martinez. This collaborative approach aimed to effectively contain the fire within the refinery premises. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with initial reports indicating a hydrocarbon leak that ignited.
As investigations into the February 1 incident continue, local authorities and the refinery are expected to provide further updates on the cause of the fire and any additional safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
