You never get a band, until you see something like this. And if you were already familiar or inclined to that band, that collective artistry, this is different. You know a unit, a stronghold, a force of vision when you receive small moments where they show raw emotion. It’s so rare to see a human being emotive without the cloud of self awareness. And when that self awareness switch is clicked off, every human is beautiful. Portnoy’s strength to show up. And Pet’s not choreographed but emotionally demanded actions are so pure. The proof is in Pet’s impeccable leads. His intuit was strangling not only confidence, but the ego that blows confidence up. His spirit was in control the whole time. Take this for notice players, mind not mind does not mean meditation. It means other pathways opening and demanding the bandwidth. Let’s get to know soul, before we try to paint it 2D. When it’s real it comes out of us like a wave in 3D. This performance of Petrucci and Portnoy. 3D raw loss.

I’ve been watching this in my studio for a while but just tonight I listened on headphones. I was blown away before but through headphones I thought my head would explode! I’ve loaded the audio into ProTools and going forward will use it as a reference track. Although I mostly do acoustic sessions, every once and a while I get a rock band in here. Usually the guitarist is a shredder. With this track as a reference I can point out that you can play melodically while still shredding. And I love me some melodic playing! This track has it all. The musicianship is great, the vocals are great, the production (EQ, mixing etc.) is phenomenal…it all goes together seamlessly. One thing I especially liked was at the five minute mark, when the guitarists change solos, there is just enough separation in the mix that you can hear the handoff. I also love the buildup..,.the dynamics. On headphones I can hear subtleties that I miss on my JBL 4311s (I know, they’re old, but they still sound fantastic). But the mix sounds great on both the monitors and the cans. I can’t wait for the next rock group to come in here so I can show them how it can, and should, be done. I’d love to hear this in surround. I’d also love to hear it without the KZbin processing. Kudos to all involved.
