HMS Defenders’ Leonardo Wildcat HMA.2 Helicopter fired the first operational Martlet Air-To-Surface missile in the Bay of Bengal as part of the Carrier Strike Group 21 Deployment.
Martlet is a laser beam riding missile; it can be fired from the shoulder of ground troops or from Wildcat HMA2. Martlet is the first of the FASGW (future anti surface guided weapons) to be brought into service on Wildcat HMA2 with Sea Venom arriving shortly. Martlet gives the wildcat the capability of defending British aircraft carriers against a large number of target sets, including but not limited to; UAV, Helicopters, VBIED, FIAC, FAC, Jet Skis and provides mission kill on much larger platforms due to its high level of accuracy.
In this video we see interviews with the aircrew, before watching the hard working ground crew prepare and fit the missile carriers to the Wildcat. We then take to the air to watch three Martlet missiles being fired, in a historic first for the Wildcat Maritime Force.
