CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Marty (Ernest Borgnine) tells his mother (Esther Minciotti) that he's just a fat, ugly man and will never find love.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Paddy Chayefsky's Oscar-winning slice-of-life drama originated as a live 1953 broadcast directed by Delbert Mann on The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse starring Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand. The Hecht-Lancaster movie version, also directed by Mann, replaces the two leads with Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair (as well as featuring several soon-to-be-familiar faces, including Jerry Paris, Frank Sutton, and Karen Steele, plus Joe Mantell, Nehemiah Persoff, and Betsy Palmer from the TV version). But it remains otherwise intact, telling of 24 very important hours in the lives of two lonely people. Marty is a bittersweet, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, and always realistic comedy-drama about Marty Pilletti (Ernest Borgnine), a 34-year-old Bronx butcher. Approaching middle-age as a burly, somewhat overweight man who has no illusions about himself or his attractiveness to women, Marty looks forward to just one thing in life -- buying his boss's butcher shop and trying to make a success in business -- and he's even uncertain about that. A gentle, good-natured man, he lives with his mother (Esther Minciotti), a kind but emotionally smothering woman, in a too-large house and spends his time a small circle of dead-end friends (Joe Mantell, Frank Sutton). One Friday night, Marty's mother convinces him to go to the Stardust Ballroom, where he meets a plain-looking schoolteacher named Clara (Betsy Blair), whose life appears to mirror his own -- she lives with her father, and is frightened about the one prospect she has for advancement in her job. Meeting her after witnessing a humiliating rejection by her blind date, Marty acts on his best impulses and asks Clara to dance, and soon they are actually enjoying each other's company. She is as drawn to him as he is to her, but both are so uncertain about putting themselves at risk emotionally, that the evening almost ends badly when he tries to kiss her -- but they agree to go to talk on the phone and go to a movie the next night. But whatever good feelings he has about Clara are soon threatened by his friends' put-downs of her, and his mother's hostility, driven by her sudden panic that if Marty marries, she'll be left living alone. Marty spends the next day alone and never does call Clara, seemingly having decided that it's best to leave well enough alone. That is, until he takes a good long look at his life, and a listen to his friends -- and he suddenly makes the decision to try for true happiness, wherever it leads.

LaMancha. One reply stated that after his outburst he puts the mask back on. I disagree. Marty fell back on a true 1st generation Italian mother. I was raised with these beautiful people in steel mill towns around Pittsburgh. On Thanksgiving the turkey went uneaten. I remember at the table Mrs. Fratangelo saying,"My sister knows nothing about turkey. It don't wanna digest! I know she wanna poison us all. Toss that bird puts the back door and get the squirrels sick. As with every year, your mama think ahead. Carmella in downstairs oven l gotta big cooker with a real food, pasta, sauce, meatballs, sausage. Get it so we eat real food. Who's idea this stupid bird". That wonderful mother of Marty oozing love, Heya Marty, why you no go to Moonglow Ballroom and dance with the pretty girls. I hear they gota some "hot tomatos there" Marty is so bowled over with his mother's attempt at using a bit of "with it" lingo his hurt melts instantly. I believe l am most pleased with Borgnine winning best actor, #2 is Broderick Crawford for "All the King's Men"

Exactly. Knowing how bad it must be to have a loser son, investing so much money, resources, care and love into one child only for him to turn out a reject filled with anger and angst is so much worse and so much more painful than simply being those things. She wasted her youth, her opportunities, her everything, only to get old while seeing how miserable your son is and being helpless, having no way to help him. Thats what really kills me inside. Not the rejections and personal failures, but the failure of making my mom happy. She deserves the world, and I cant even give her the happiness of a mother seeing her son living his life well.

This scene had a monumental impact on me when I saw it years after I lived "Lord of the Flies" in Catholic school, and my heart still breaks every time I see it. I'm not disparaging the church - my wife's experiences in government schools was worse because they didn't pretend to aspire (don't get me started on etymology - ponder that the root of aspire seems to be related to inspire, i.e. literally breath in the life force) to any higher authority other than the gov't, whereas I got to live the stark dichotomy of promoting Godly virtues while allowing the seeds of endless scenes such as this to be planted and nurtured right under the blind eyes of the nuns. I'm blessed for the dark experience that opened my spiritual eye and made me the teacher I've been in my 40+ years teaching in rebel private schools I ran that put emotional intelligence on par with (actually above) intellectual development. I shared this clip and my experience with many high school students over the decades...

At 34 with no relationship ever I resonate Marty's feeling. Tried to put my heart out with pure intentions to every girl i spoke or went on date, but only ended up hurting myself. Some girl's don't reply, some only want to chat, some will never meet and those who meet will never want to meet again . I guess some guys like us have to accept that starting a relationship, family are not for us . Sooner we accept this , we can save our self from more humiliation and pain. I hope all guys like Marty out there who are seeking their companion, may they find peace and purpose in their life's.

Two and a half minutes of genius. Marty getting a kick out of his mother suggesting, or even knowing about the Stardust Ballroom. Then nonchalantly confessing to her that he's accepted that he'll always be a bachelor. After she persists, confessing out loud all of the years of hurt and rejection he's already endured in silence. To finally losing his temper and revealing to her his insecurities and his "heartache." After bearing his soul, I love how he taps his mother's arm as if to apologize for having yelled at her, or having shared his burden with her. Comforting her even though he's the one in pain. And chuckling again about the Stardust Ballroom being loaded with tomatoes. After that emotional roller coaster, he puts on his blue suit and does what his mother says and goes out dancing.

As someone who has tried time and time again to find a girl, to put my heart out there only to have it stomped, crushed, or tossed aside, this resonates with me. People ask me why I am still single... I don't wanna be, I want someone to share everything that brings me joy, I want someone to love and to hold through those long nights. But life isn't like the movies, its not like the books, its a cold miserable place and we don't get what we want. We never find the one true love, we deal with heart break over and over again till we grow so sick of it we either settle with someone we don't love or we just stop trying. All we can do is keep it together and cling to the few social connections that keep us from ending it all.

I was taught my whole life to treat women well, be respectful, responsible, considerate, and emotionally available. All I've wanted was a mature-minded woman that I can love but it never seems to work out and it really makes you feel like you're not good enough even though you know how much you have to offer as a person. One of the things that always got me about this scene in particular, is when he realizes after sharing his true feelings, and how hurt his mother is seeing her son in pain, he tries to brush it off and fake laugh about the "loaded with tomatoes" bit. Children also try to protect their own parents, and often times from what is hurting them. On the one hand it seems noble, but on the other, it is internalizing your own emotions which is never good. It may hurt for your loved ones to know that you are hurting, but if they truly love you, they would want to be there for you and help you through it, as you would for them. It may be hard, scary and painful in the beginning, but that is only temporary. It gets better from there.

I’m in my early 20s, but I look older than I should. I’ve only “chased” three girls in my life in the form of exchanging numbers to no avail. I’ve got nothing to offer to girls: no attractive features, and I’m not a “fun” person. I fear I may end up like this man. If I do, I hope I can accept it.
