One of the subtle details of this scene is the ambiance of the wind. Considering the pseudo-supernatural element to HPD, which I don't think is typical for westerns, the constant whistling of the wind over the plains adds an extra spookiness to the whole thing.
@DG-sf9ei
@DG-sf9ei 3 күн бұрын
1st comment I've seen about this and it's surprising not many mention it. Agreed, and the wind fills in the gaps to make it more mysterious. Also, anyone who's lived on the great plains of the western frontier can relate, because the wind is whipping around just about non-stop in the wide open country. So yeah, the wind effect in this movie gives it some spookiness, yet a sense of relatability at the same time if you reside in this region.

The character actors of that era were so perfect. The barber with the combover, the sneering outlaws...I few years ago while watching The Rifleman, I went down an internet rabbit hole on lots of character actors that played the bad guys in the 60s and 70s - the guys you know are bad guys the moment you see their faces. Turns out a lot of them were absolutely the sweetest, funniest people in real life. Always good to remember that 95% of the people, including horrible villains you see on tv and movie screens are theater kids. Terrifying, mean, murderous monsters onscreen but grownup theater kids when the camera is off.

It HAS a message, or did you miss that? The man with no name is there to bring a reckoning to this town in which the citizens are complicit in the killing of their former sheriff. It's a town of corruption and no real conscience. So he tries to make them all miserable as part of the penalty, invites the original gang members in after everyone paints the town red (you know, as in Hell) and brings some brutal justice to them. So the avenging angel takes down the wicked.

@@jonathanmarshall2802 Sure, like decent conduct, equality and devotion to facts instead of warped and dangerous conspiracy theories. It would be a shame if we actually had films that reinforced such basic human values and principles. As I said above, this film is mostly about justice mixed with retribution--the stranger wreaking his form of justice on a town that is so morally bankrupt. Definitely not the "retribution" invoked by that malignant narcissist and criminal traitor, trump.

Really???? He never hanged his gun there, just the belt and the holster with a decoy. You can even see him take a decoy gun handle out of his holster later in the scene around the 3:08 mark and put the real one back.

When he hangs up his holster it has a dummy gun handle in it. When the little dude comes into the shop to see the destruction you see Clint's character stand up, put on his belt, remove the dummy gun handle and holster the real weapon.
