Jimi was one of those guys who influenced every guitarist on the planet. Even if they don't know it.
@greatwhite619676 жыл бұрын
No doubting Jimi was an innovator but I think that when you talk about a gutarist that's touched & influenced every guitarist, that would have to go to Chuck Berry way before Jimi Hendrix & this is coming from a huge fan of Hendrix... We definitely wouldn't have had all those A List Guitarist's like Jimi Hendrix/Eric Clapton/Buddy Guy et al until Chuck Berry came along & brought his brand of rock electric guitar to the main stream..
@stijn47716 жыл бұрын
Think about Robert Johnson.
@greatwhite619676 жыл бұрын
@@stijn4771 True that about Robert Johnson but unless you were steeped in Blues History it's my guess you wouldnt come across Robert Johnson & alot of those earlier invotatars unless you stayed in the heartlands of the American South & it took a long time & many artist both African American & White to breakdown that cultural barrier down, so that music could be played to all cultures & not be judged but enjoyed... And to me Chuck Berry crossed that divide alot sooner in a way that those earlier pioneers couldn't do because of the ongoing racism he faced like many others at that time & the shear lack of interest from the American market to record these great artists like him unless you came from the South as many young kids who went to Bible & Gospel Churches would sneak around trying to listen to music that was most likely banned in their homes by their parents... Even Chuck Berry had to fight tooth & nail to get his music across like any great artists have to when theres more than music at stake but a social commentary as well of those times... Only a handful of white men bothered to track down some of those early African American invotatars but one man did as he wanted to keep a recorded library of this music from these performers like Robert Johnson/Blind Lemon Jefferson/Charley Patton/Leadbelly & so many others on the acoustic/then the first attempt at guitar amplification with the Resonantor Guitar & there's no denying their influence on guitarist but my point was that it was Chuck Berry that took the guitar back into black hands & played it to an American audience now willing to listen to music that was usually out of their hearing reach, that & he played the electric guitar like no other at the time... Why do you think that out of all the songs to play from that time period in the first ' Back The Future ' film when Marty McFly goes to the Ball & ends up playing & singing a song on stage & they chose Chuck Berrys " Johnny B Good " as it was like nothing anyone had heard of before & it was loved by blacks & whites all across America... In the UK those artists songs were brought over when british citizens or record store owners went there for a holiday or to find the next best thing & would bring back all of these great acts both black & white & that was passed on to their kids... In fact most UK kids asked friends & basically anyone who was visiting America to bring over all of those great blues & gospel acts so they could listen to them & to this day there's still a section of Americans that don't & can't get why we love the Blues so much UK... You have to remember that even white artists like Elvis Presley & Jerry Lee Lewis to name only 2 struggled to get on any radios outside of certain areas of the South of America, as alot of these artist only got played in their localised areas, as the rest of America wasn't interested in this music, in fact it wasn't even given any marketing or airplay because the majority of white americans out with the South didn't want this music to get within an inch of corrupting their young kids minds & body's... There was one white gentleman who went all over the south to all the shacks & huts & bars, basically anywhere were this music was being played to record it on primitive equipment & keep it alive for historical posterity as he felt it was going to die away because of the lack of interest in this black southern music... You'll have to forgive me as I've forgotten his name but you need to realise that no one except purist fans were interested in those early guitar players & lets not forget about those great gospel acts & singers that came from the South... Ironically it was what we call the British Invasion Of America by white bands & acts from the UK like the Beatles then the The Rolling Stones/Herman's Hermits/The Kinks/Dave Clark Five & Peter Greens earlier line up of Fleetwood Mac along with many others there after that played the Blues or a rock version of it back to the American public couldn't get enough of it, which then opened a door for fans to find the original versions of those songs recorded by Black Artists which they thought was a cover version of that song when in fact it was originally recorded by black southern acts who wouldn't couldn't get proper airtime in every southern area nevermind the rest of the USA... I'm not being disrespectful as I have no idea of your knowledge & in fact you may know more than me, so I don't mean to preach or sound like I know everything, as I don't but I've amassed a huge range of eclectic music that to me I don't even categories or look at it as a white person or someone of any any other ethnicity, as all I hear is music & I don't care about the colour of their skin... To give you an idea of how difficult it was for African American Acts to get significant airplay out with the South, Fats Domino's song " Ain't That A Shame " was covered & sung by Pat Boone because even though they didn't want blacks performing these songs they knew there was money to be made & again ironically it led fans of Pat Boones song to track down Fats Domino's version thinking that was a cover when it was the original version to start with... I could go on but I've things to do & it's an each to their own as to who they believe was the best innovative guitarist... To this day I've mentioned Duan Eddy as one of my favourite singers & guitarists but many of them have said " Who " but I don't berate them & point that in the right direction... There are so so many that I'm blessed to have heard of them & shared them with others & all the great guitarists that came from the earliest days right up until now & it's sad to see so many of my greats pass away like BB King & so many more but that's life & we all pass on eventually & if we leave something for others to make their life that little bit better or more like these great musicians & singers then I'm happier for it... Its surprise you to know that I have a list longer than both arms outwide of so many that I could've mentioned like Buddy Guy/Freddie King & Albert King but for this comment I went with Chuck Berry... Chuck Berrys Johnny B Good was launched in the Voyager 1 along with others artist as a message to any life forms out there & that tells what you need to know about Chucks contribution & especially that one song Johnny B Good... There was a great story I heard years ago that NASA had received a reply from alien life forms & the reply they sent back was: " Send Us More Chuck Berry Songs " I had to grin & thought it was a great anecdote that tells even in jest they still mention Chuck Berry as one of thee true first innovators that broke from the racial divide...

I've tried to find so many "local" guitar teachers to basically listen to what I "got" and teach me some of the insights I'm missing. I learned a lot of my blues links lucky enough to live across the street from Johnny Shine's coffee hangout 20 years ago that I still use daily. But inevitably I leave the guitar teacher with a book, some theory notes and perhaps some practice tips. I've been playing on/off for 50 years...still an amateur, but I find Marty so much more enlightening. I wish the were videos on how to use a loop pedal or how to best use my recording software...maybe there are. Problem is, at 59 I'm beginning to forget faster then I learn :( Prevagen anyone? Anyway.. thanks Marty...inspiring at the very least. DrColg8
