another trick I like to use with humbuckers is to dial in a bright tone on the amp, then roll back the tone knob on the guitar just a bit, juuuust until you manage to mellow out the bright picking sound on your guitar.

There's a lot of ways to dial in tone. One thing I've learned is that tone is an extremely fluid thing. Meaning that your settings depend greatly on the current situation. For example, I found a really nice tone at quiet bedroom volumes, but once I turned my amp up, I really had to dial the bass down quite a lot because at higher volumes, it was sounding a little too thumpy, whereas lower volumes it sounded nice and full. If your tone is too harsh and hurts your ears, then you'll want to turn treble down. If it sound really honky, then you probably have too much mids, if the low end sounds really flubby, then you're using too much bass. That's usually my method. And never ignore presence dials if you have them. They can help you cut through without making your guitar sound harsh like treble does. I often have higher presence and low treble.

Well if you play at home, just for your ears you can dial in what you like. But in terms of song mixing or performance with a band, you should forget about what you like and dial in a tone that works for a band as a whole. So at the end you can end up with a tone that you don't like, but it works for a song or band.

Great video! I just got a Deluxe Reverb Tone Master a few weeks ago and while I love it, I'm kind of obsessed with the different ways to dial them in. I heard that the EQ controls for a Deluxe Reverb are reductive, similar to a guitar's tone knobs, meaning that a flat setting would be with Bass and Treble at 10. What do you think?

I’ve been looking into eq a bit already, and a few things I’ve found, some metal heads like scooped mids, but Lemmy of Motörhead is not one of them- bass 0 mids 10 treble 0. Angus of acdc has the afore mentioned flat eq- specifically Bass 3, mids 3, treble 3- boosted via a Schaffer Vega wireless system, original (let there be rock to back in black tour), replica (from solo dallas on the rock or bust your), and replica tower (also solo Dallas, used on power up), (not sure of boost or gain settings, got this from premier guitar on their rock or bust tour, for power up, don’t know snap either), hi sensitivity Marshall plexi or jcm , railing on super light EB slinkies on a Gibson sg. but for the most of the ac/dc tone, look at Malcolm. The beast is a semi hollow Gretsch duo jet with only the bridge pup, bypassed tone and volume. As for the amp, Mal (and Stevie now) use a super bass, and while I’m not sure of the specifics eq, it’s low bass, mids a hair under halfway, and hi trebles. And here’s something to pick up on-the sloped eq helps bring out the bass player (nowadays Cliff Williams). As for the tone, which makes the bulk of the bands sound, it is really clean-lo sensitivity-but Stevie and Mal rail on Gibson nickel 12 gauge power cables. All use fender (extra?) heavy Picks, and Stevie buzzes through half a pick per song. Mal has been reported on at least one forum ( I forget whether it was an ex guitar tech or a friend of one) to go through around 30-50 per show (definitely more than 1 pick per song).

Question for the Strat tuning. Are your tone knobs at 5 as well? Thanks for posting!
@wonderwomanguy4 жыл бұрын
If you play a late 80's strat, it's best to put it at 5 to start because they are double potted and act as a 2-band EQ. But all the rest are single pot; they sound best at 10 to start, and roll it back if needed on the fly. Cheers!
@wonderwomanguy4 жыл бұрын
Outside of 70's solid states, it's really hard to get BAD tone out of any Fender amp. Maybe look at how to dial in good sounds from a late 80's Crate. 🤔
@balkanyankee36574 жыл бұрын
Question: What about the tone control on the guitar. Where did you set that? All the way open to ten? Or did you dial it back to a lower number? Thanks.
@wonderwomanguy4 жыл бұрын
Unless it's a late 80's strat, go ahead and keep things simple and start at 10. Dial the tone you want on you amp and go. If you feel you're just a little too bright while you're playing then you can dial it down on the guitar just for a quick fix. Simple is usually better when you start. Good luck!

Hey Marty and Lindsay, is there any good rule of thumb for when to use the guitars eq control over the amps?
@wonderwomanguy4 жыл бұрын
I'm not Marty or Lindsay but if I may: Start off with you guitar's tone at 10 and keep it simple. Dial in what you want on your amp. Should you feel you're too bright, in the middle of your playing you can turn down the tone on the guitar quickly on the fly. If you're playing an inexpensive guitar, your tone control may not do much anyway due to a cheap, small compacitor. And while a good one (an orange Sprague for example) only cost about $3, you'll have to solder it in. Hope that helps.
@jimcamp24234 жыл бұрын
This also has a lot to do with the cabinet you're playing as to what you're dialing in. Open back and it's ambient sound that fills & surrounds. Open backs tend to also accentuate the treble, mids & bass suffer that and it's why she added bass and lowered the treble. Closed back and it's a punchier bass. With the Closed back, that punch with reverb growl sustains and the illusion of more bass results. Speakers also have different voices because they all aren't the same design specs for voice coil length, magnet size, and so on. The reason the SG & semi-hollow were dialed as closely as they were, the humbuckers are very similar for what they have for resistance and tone. Don't try to play Metal on an open back without humbuckers, that's a chore and it's never going to really be that Swedish Death Metal sound. I've tried to get an open back to sound as close as possible to a closed back cabinet. It's frustrating, but that's not to say that an open back won't sound great, you'll just sound like Tom Petty for Rock & Roll.
@jimcamp24234 жыл бұрын
Oh another thing too, if one has a quality amp, that should be nearly dialed in for clean with the treble, mid & bass EQ at the 12 o'clock position. The signal your guitar produces is pretty much 5's when the guitar knobs are set to max for volume & tone. Saw a video Pete Thorn doesn't wander very far from 5's to get the tone dialed in. Then again, Ola Englund will set EQ to 10 for a distortion pedal for that Swedish Death Metal chug.
