I think this is one of his best solo songs. It would have been nice to hear a live version either with his solo band or with The Who.

I first heard this song on an album I borrowed from the library in the very early eighties. The album was called 'Best Bits' was was deleted not many years after that. I then searched the four corners of the earth searching for a second-hand copy of the album. When in 1997 a CD came out titled 'Martyrs & Madman' I thought I finally had it, but bizarrely that album didn't feature the title track. Eventually in 2005 a CD compilation album called 'Moonlighting' was released and I finally got hold of the song. But now due to the magic of the internet all I have to do is do a youtube search and up it comes. The internet is an amazingly magical thing. Thanks for posting.

+Stans soapbox Hi Stan, "Martyrs & madmen" , "Treachery", "Bitter & Twisted", are all songs wrote by the great Steve Swindells of Hawklords/Hawkwind fame and sung by Roger Daltry, "Martyrs & Madmen" & "Treachery" were wrote back in 1980 for an album called "Treachery" but never got released until 2012 as "The Lost Albums" ."Bitter & Twisted" came from Steve's album "Fresh Blood" from 1980

@@philipparsons7364 I wrote it, of course, and also played keys on this version, which I think is kind-of over-produced.

This track wouldn't have been out of place in the Mcvicar movie soundtrack. Or the 'Under A Raging Moon album.

Or even the Quadrophenia album ( I needed time to think of that one ).
