Fixing a Cracked Excavator Bucket and Digging a new road

The rock bucket on my Hitachi UH043 digger had developed a 8 inch crack around the top mount so I ground out a vee on both sides, welded it up and added a bar at the edge to give it more strength.

onya Marty! when I was a kid I read a book about a guy who rescued a small bulldozer that fell through the ice. Then you came into my life rescuing the Hitachi from the forest, one of my favourite moments. Love your work!

At least that rather nasty ground makes decent road base/building material, especially as you've got the equipment to deal with it. Good to see your understanding that the frequent maintenance approach is by far the best option - Too often I see instances where new tracks have to be made (no more material to work with due to erosion), leaving nasty scars of old eroded roads, because of a lack of maintenance, often also as a result of lack of whoop-de-doos/berms (raised sections that divert the flow or water before it builds up too much speed/eroding force/ditches or culverts.

Marty have you ever made cribbing ? Using logs to support the road where you get washout. Fill with that hillside material.

Yes I do that with the root balls and durable timber, this pine timber rots within a few years so it wouldn't hold up long term.

I used a Weldtech 141 Arc wound up to maximum, a little light for this job but it did the job with a deep vee and a few passes

Marty how do you go with local council or whatever when you cut new tracks in etc?? I know if I did that here in Australia, even on my own property , I would be hit with astronomical fines.

It is a permitted activity to build access roads on a rural zone forestry block. Subject to certain conditions.

Just curious Marty how come you haven't put a hydraulic thumb on that Hitachi? I know wiadoubt it would make taking out trees and movie big objects be a lot easier for you than just having to use the bucket and bom to get it done. Also I know you have a dozer but when using the track home why not also add you a 4way blade ? They do have them in that size machine with it attached. I know that it would involve a bit of fabrication and welding but that's no problem for a talented man as you are I know your more than capable. I'm asking because it would surely simplify and make your road clearing and fill ins along the roadway alot easier if you added those 2 attachments to the hoe. Take care down under and I'll be looking forward to your next endeavors. Miss seeing a resurrection been awhile since you went on a hunt a revive some old iron.

I have got used to working without a thumb, for me it's not worth the time, expense and extra weight added to the arm. Same deal with the blade
