Nick Spencer didn't fail to make a name for himself as Spider-Man writer. At least not due to his own faults. His run was well-written if somewhat overstretched. But in reality, his run was screwed by the higher-ups, because Spencer wanted to undo One more day and was right in the middle of it when Cebulski, Lowe and their ilk stepped in. Man had his own story ruined completely. No wonder he left Marvel for Substack.

I was as shocked as anyone that he turned out a pretty solid Spider-Man run for a while after what he did with his Captain America run. I was convinced that he was going to do to Peter what he did with Steve and Sam, but I was happily proven wrong. Marvel and Spider-Man editorial just don't know how to make smart decisions. I may not have liked the way he did it, but I can at least appreciate erasing Sins Past. I'd very much like for them to beg Spencer to come back, right the ship, do what he originally planned to do, give actual fans what they want from Peter, and then move forward. I don't expect that, though, because editorial at Marvel across the board insists on cutting off their nose to spite their face. God forbid they actually listen to their audience instead of sneering at them for a change...

At this point, I believe that not only Spider-Man, but even most of his supporting cast have all become either bastardized or bland versions of themselves. Peter’s incompetence grows steadily more and more. Mary Jane is a THOT. May is irrelevant. Otto can’t decide whether he wants to be Doc Ock or Spider-Man. Ben Reilly has literally been fumbled harder than I thought feasibly possible. TWICE. Norman is extremely basic and predictable. With their recent fumbling of Hickman’s X-Men, I have lost all interest, and more importantly: faith, in Earth-616, as X-Men has proven to me that character progression is fleeting and illusionary in the main Marvel Universe.

Zeb biggest mistake was trying to set-up a storyline with a weird flashback and then try to explain the events leading to present time. It never quite fell into place and seem very disjointed. I never felt Spider-Man didn’t do anything egregious. The plot simply fell apart. Zeb should have avoided the flashback step-up and trust in his writing skills to start a story from the beginning not in the midddle.

The problem i have with Wells' Tombstone is the fact that it's so clear that Wells copied the characterization from the Spectacular Spider-man cartoon. The problem is that isn't Tombstone. In the series the team wanted to use Kingpin but they couldn't so they decided to use another gangster type of villain from Spider-man's rogue's gallery: Tombstone. Lonnie is supposed to be more of a street gangster, an unhinged maniacal bastard and not a cold and rational mob boss

There's something about the Spider-Man editorial that saps the talent from writers. Wells' New Mutants and Hellions are 2 of the best X-Men runs this century, and the latter was written under Jordan White. It really has been a poor run. I jumped off about 15 issues back, I can't stand my favourite character stagnating and going nowhere with continual poor storylines. Oh for the good old days of the full Spidey supporting cast and all the drama (and growth even) that it gave you. Marvel editorials stance on the whole Peter/MJ thing truly is baffling, especially given DC moved on with Superman and Batman and allowed both to have kids. I do love Ultimate Spider-Man now, and for exactly the reason that it gives you what you want and feels like it has substance. Joshua Williamson I wonder on Spidey, given his DC announcement?

I avoided Dan Slott like the plague for the longest time because everyone said his run was so bad, but I recently went back and read parts of his run and the original superior Spider-Man and I have to say, I don't really understand the issue everyone has with it. With the exception of the Parker Industries stuff, I had an awful lot of fun with it. It's miles better than any Spidey run I've read since I got back into comics which was around the start of the Spencer run.

@@JP-eo8zw Short version, Pete and MJ were moving in together when Rabin attacked. He sent them to another dimension where they meet Paul. Peter finishes a device Paul was working on to go back to their dimension, but it only has enough power for one. He gives it to MJ, but before she can use it Rabin's god Wayep attacks, and to save Peter MJ puts the device on him and uses it. Peter notices that time passed more quickly in the other dimension (one week there was only a day in the 616), and in a rush works with Norman Osborn, steals from the FF, and hits Cap America to finish as soon as possible. He finishes within a couple day or weeks (it's not clear because the story is bad), goes back to the other dimension, and MJ has gotten with Paul while he was away. It's revealed that he was gone for nearly four years in her time, and within 11 months she starts a relationship with Paul. Once Peter saves her, she leaves him officially for Paul. I say "essentially" an affair because it's not functionally different, but some people object to it. She couldn't break up with Peter because her and Peter were separated, but she does start the relationship with Paul prior to telling Peter she's leaving him. She has no reason for leaving him other than her relationship with Paul, she just chooses him over Peter. This is why everyone objects, because it's telling the reader that MJ's love for Peter is unimportant and unspecial. She just falls in love with someone else and leaves him. Some people try to claim the fake children (don't ask it's not worth the ffort) she had adopted in the other dimension were why she stayed with Paul, but raising kids doesn't require her to sleep with Paul to begin with, Peter would have accepted those kids if she wanted him, and months and months have passed since the kids were deleted and she's both still with Paul and reaffirmed to Peter that she "moved on" from him. The Short short answer: MJ was left alone with Paul a long time, started a relationship with him and decided she loved him more than Peter. Which is a bullshit OOC character assassination.

In fairness, Reed was out of town so Johnny and Ben wouldn't let Peter take what he needed, and Cap wanted to question Peter because Paul shoved the dead God (the god was killed by the portal device that sent Peter back opening a huge portal, no explanation as to why Paul and/or MJ didn't go through the portal instead) through the portal and it exploded, so Peter buried his suit because his mask was torn for....reasons.... Look explaining the story is difficult because it's terrible and full of plot holes and contrivance, you got the basic gist correct. Garbage, character assassinates MJ, must be undone.

And what could be better than this ? Oh how about a sweet blood drenched cherry on top of delicious cake. And BTW that particular cherry just so happens to be THE Punisher. Yes , The Punisher is also included in that collection and I can hear millions of Punisher fans screeming with joy and excitement that they can finally play the cult classic beat em up as either the Punisher of the OG Nick Fury.

I doubt it will end in January It's been mentioned many times that Wells's run could be ending with issue #60, meaning, if true, October will be the final month of Zeb Wells. and the arc will really be issues #56-60, making it 5 issues. and while synical, I REALLY hope this final arc does away with "paul" and bring Peter and Mary Jane together, but I'm really having trouble seeing how it can be done, unless it has something to do with the three skull which we haven't seen yet. and I do have this theory that "paul", to fund Mary Jane being Jackpot, is selling his symboligy tech to criminals, because of what we saw in Gang War, and it will be bought to light during the final arc.

If I... Was hired onto the Writing staff for this Run and was asked for ideas how to make it atleast marginally better. I'd have Paul be an Apostle or Vessel of Mephisto, trying to create a new Heir using Mary Jane and that's why he had the two split up in One More Day so he could slip in. Yeah, there would still be some problems but come on, Paul was already a Villain- If they were so adamant about keeping One More Day they may as well have tried using it some way. Have it revealed the reason why Spider-Man was getting beat by Vulture was because his power was being drained from the Contract still being active and Mephisto was just having a laugh at Pete as he suffered over and over so he wouldn't have time to think to investigate his and Mary's relationship further.

I reviewed a video on this heap of doodoo and decided that this was no longer the cannon Spider-Man. I’m my head cannon day one doesn’t happen Spider-Man arrives on Paul’s planet except they all go into the portal and manage to stop Paul’s father from doing the godhood thing. After that Peter remains with MJ and Paul acts more like a brother to Peter since he didn’t steal MJ they act more like a good trio than everything. Together the 3 of them take down many villains green goblin gets stopped by Spider-Man King pin gets slapped by Spider-Man and Paul beats Tombstone into the ground for hurting Spidey as Mary Jane helps by becoming a hacker. However Paul’s dad manages to get back to the 616 universe and attack downtown New York. MJ tracks down Paul’s godhood father and Paul and Peter head to stop him. However during the fight Peter begins to feel a weird sensation a feeling he’s felt before and strangely enough it’s coming from Paul’s father. Paul begins to realise his father couldn’t have done this since yes he was a god but there’s no way even for a god he could have traveled between dimensions without…AN EXTERNAL FACTOR. Paul forces himself and his father into the portal he came out of with the portal closing with Peter not being able to follow. They both arrive on the barren world Paul once called home where he finally figures out what outside force was allowing his father to enter this universe it was Maphisto using Paul’s father’s body as a puppet. Before they fight Mephisto shows Paul a universe where he and MJ are married and have kids and he says he can give this all to Paul on a whim at the price of torturing Peter mentally. Paul stares at the offer…he observes…he thinks…he calculates the pros and cons of the deal and in response: he spits in the devils face follow by a punch. Mehpisto howls in rage and with one swipe launches Paul in building after building after Building the only thing keeping him a live was his super strength. Mephisto beats Paul into the ground smiling as his blood flew everywhere and in one large disgusting fist of blood and burnt skin he brought it down on Paul ending him. Spider-Man with the help of one of Paul’s devices he left back at his house which he left there think he didn’t need it makes it to the universe Paul and Mephisto are in. Spidey sees the lifeless Paul nothing more than a red putrid paste. Mephisto laughs every second of Spider-Man’s suffering a treat which never ends another friend lost to a force he couldn’t stop for he was Spider-Man and he can’t be everywhere at once. Spider-Man Paused and breathed heavily suddenly everything was a Blur to him and he spoke to the abominable creature. “You do this for nothing more than pleasure? You do this for the sweet tang which is my pain? That pang of joy which is a taste you love and never wish to leave you?” “Yes it’s a taste men could only imagine in their limited minds why?” “Because I wish I can break I wish I can just take of the gloves the web shooters everything just to feel that same feeling but ill never feel that” “And why not?” “Because I’m Spider-Man and Spider-Man doesn’t kill or enjoy the thrill of taking a life but here now…” Spider-Man removed his mask and replaced it with his black suit letting it rap on him it enveloped him up until his face the only thing visible. “But here now Spider-Man died on this day because there is so much he could handle and now you don’t fight Spider-Man *you fight Peter Parker”* In that moment Spider-Man disappeared from the devil’s few a sharp feeling of fear cut the devil’s soul he no longer felt pleasure felt fear. Just then a fist with force he could never have imaged the weight of it hit him the blow breaking his jaw and ripping arteries everywhere. Mephisto screamed like a scared child who underestimated their parent kindness for weakness he threw buildings as a blur moved in the corner of his eye. He tried to move only for an another devastating punch hit him again in the back he screamed as bone and flesh ripped themselves from him from the blow he fell on his back and pleaded. “I’ll reverse the contract! No strings no traps you can have your marriage back everything EVERYTHING IM NOT LYING!” *”do it”* The devil did it so many memories returned MJ and Peter stood still frozen so many memories sacrificed for a woman who wished to see her beloved again. Mephisto crawled away the deal fair and square only for a pipe to be jammed through him. “But I filled my end of the deal!” “Remember what you did in that ally way then that ROOM *DO YOU REMEMBER?!”* “What?” “The deal you added your own little twist I’m just filling MY end of the bargain as well” With that the pipe was logged into Mephisto’s heart ending him. Decades later in a calm grave yard lay the gravestones of Uncle Ben and beside it Aunt May and a row away was Paul’s grave slightly smaller yet more polished. Peter sat on a couch retired from hero life and a job MJ sat with him on the couch and his little son came to snuggle up with him. “Dad can you tell me another one of your Spider-Man stories?” “Sure thing bucko and here’s how it started” The end…

~sighs~ Why do writers think going, “Oh, it seemed like the villain was reforming, but he actually wasn’t!” is an original idea, or even a good idea? It would be more interesting to have a villain actually reform and have to balance their bad past and their promising future. It would certainly be better than the writers telling the readers, “Ha ha, I tricked you! Isn’t that great?” It’s even worse when a writer genuinely has a villain reform, but then another writer undoes it because they didn’t like the idea of a character changing for the better.

I had heard that spidey got f*cked hard, but nevermind me only now realizing how bad, i need to ask this: have they ever wondered what made spidey relatable for people? Because i figured it was because he struggled with things in life but usually managed to confront his problems and get over them, also he achieved a lot, including being happily married to the woman he loves. I REALLY dont know what they were thinking with doing all this, i had to look up why people hated spiderman since "one more day/a new day" so much and... yeah, i now see why, they made spiderman into the most UNrelatable hero, this comic run sounds more like torture-p*rn than anything.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I refuse to read another Spider-man run unless they allow the current writer to retcon One More Day. Bless Nick Spencer for trying, but their adherence to sticking to a canon that NO ONE LIKES is pathetic. Its not even brand synergy, NO movie or show is going to adapt that story because its so terrible!

They hyping up tombstone as if anyone actually gives a shit about him as a villain, apart from his appearance in the 90s cartoon, Spectacular Spider-Man and in the play station game, I have not seen him in anything recent that hypes him up as a notable villain, He is not on my top 10 spidey villians list, not even on my 20 or 30, maybe 50.

Zeb Wells' Spider-Man Doctor Octopus Year One was his best work so seeing him totally bungle this run of Amazing Spider-Man was absolutely mind-numbing to me. The horrible quality of his run caused me to end my subscription to the comic and I find myself now in the same situation as many other Spider-Man fans who have migrated to Ultimate Spider-Man simply because it's giving us what we want: Peter Parker as a family man married to Mary Jane. Honestly I think a large part of the problem with Spider-Man goes beyond the second Clone Saga and One More Day: simply put, Peter Parker is a character who Marvel has used and explored for so many decades that they really need to just retire the character and replace him with somebody else in the role of Spider-Man. This is one of the problems that I have with much of modern superhero comics, namely that the concept of legacy heroes has died and that everybody has to remain as the same hero for all-time simply because of a fear of loss of brand recognition. I just really wish that we could either get a new Spider-Man or introduce a newer, more mature May Parker as Spider-Girl / Woman .

I might be a fool to hope for the next writer to do better, but I do think the best way to end this run of SM comics would be to reveal that Wells' MJ was never the real one. Either have her killed and revealed to be a demonic shapshifter sent by Mephisto to replace her and make sure MJ and Peter can't have Mayday. In which case Peter has to get Strange's help to go to Hell and save the real Mary Jane. Or could have it be a clone Paul made after the real MJ died in his world amd he originally intended to male a clone to give to Peter as a way to make up for not protecting the real one, only for things to turn out as they did. In which case we could have Peter finally snap on Paul and call him out for everytjing he put Peter through before walking away. Cut to a few weeks later and Peter is visited by Dr. Strange who reveals to Spidey theyight be able to undo everything thats happened recently by going to Hell and finding the contract Peter made with Mephisto and destroy it. Thus undoing One More Day and giving Spider-Man a chance to have his wife back. Maybe give Paul get a redemption arv where he tries helping Peter as a way to atone for his mistakes

Why is this run the worst? I'll tell you. Before this run, people identified the worst runs in ASM history by the story title (One More Day, Sins Past). This isn't just a bad run that will be remembered by a title, it will always be "The Wells Run." His name will be forever attached to this era. He now owns it. Also, Tombstone is a C Lister bad guy. I don't understand the hype being given this "brutal fight." He is literally no physical match for Spider-Man. Just another Wells steamer about to be served up there, I suspect.

I'm really glad that Zeb Wells is leaving ASM. I do think it's the worst Spider-Man run ever, or at least I can't think of a worse one. I think really, Nick Lowe needs to leave as well. He's definitely part of the problem. I'm not sure who could come on next who would cause any sort of hype. Maybe Donny Cates if he's recovered from his accident?

Reboot is the wrong term. Crisis on Infinite Earths wss a reboot. Marvel has never actually done a reboot. If the Ultimate line was 616 then that would have been a reboot.
