FYI both Arkham Horror and Lord of the Rings are being moved to a new model. Both have new Core Sets now that have far more cards and remove the need for multiple Core Sets. Also both are going to a release model where each cycle releases all at once as a single purchase (LotR) or for Arkham Horror 2 bxoes (one is all the investigator stuff and the other all the story stuff). In theory this reduces the cost of entry and also makes keeping everything in print easier (fewer SKUs).

So cool to see Dale on here. I've just got into this game the past few weeks, and his Channel has been awesome!. From an accessibility standpoint, I've had no issues with Rules issues. I feel like the tutorial does a good job, and I've been able to take down the first scenario and then some with just preconstructed decks. I'm excited to get into the deck building - but also totally happy with the precons, and feel like they're a helpful start.

Disagree with the rulebook/FAQ rant. If you only buy the core box, you don't need any FAQ per say. Maybe for some edge cases, but the core set and the included rulebook is enough and adequate to enjoy the game. Then, if you get more stuff, of course, new keywords and some newer card will introduce unanswered or new situations (not possible with core box only), but as stated, there's erratas and FAQs all over the place. If you really like the genre/game, it won't stop you. If you have enough with the core box, then it's a non-issue.

Just FYI - Lord of the Rings Revised "The box comes with everything you may need to kick off your adventures, including enough cards and components for four-player games right out of the gate."

I love this game. I’m missing a few heroes but I really don’t feel like I’m missing out on those that I didn’t pick up. I have a hard time playing the prebuilt decks. Dreaming up a deck design and finding out if it works or not is fun.

I've definitely spent a billion dollars on this game, but it's been worth every penny. Hours and hours and hours of fun and entertaining gameplay, and so many different ways to replay it. Great conversation about the game. The problem I often see is that people buy all the content before they even play a single game. they then resell it because ultimately the game does not come out enough or they do not have a group of players who want to play as often as they do. But I agree that this game is a lifestyle. When you start buying content, you want to own it all. For my part I mainly play solo or solo with 2 hands because I don't have a group of players to play with. This is the game that so even though I spent several hundred dollars, it's worth it, much more than big games like terraforming mars or spirit island which are expensive and with which I play less often.

On BGG there are decklists for each hero that can be built from a single collection - they're a neat alternative to the pre-builds that come in the packs. A bit stronger and more synergies.

Marvel Champions is a good, solid game. But for theme and the feeling that you're playing a specific hero, with specific abilities, nothing beats Sentinels of the Multiverse. In SoTM, each hero has their own deck--there are no modular aspects--and the gameplay simulates a battle with a chosen villain, or team of villains. As a co-op game, it gives you the real sense that you are playing your unique role on a superhero team. As a solo game, you take on the role of the commander, or director, of the battle, using your heroes to counter what the villain is throwing at you. It's very granular, and low-level (for a card game), and, with all of the different deck mechanics, villain mechanics, environment mechanics, no two games are ever the same. There is endless replayability. Marvel Champions, on the other hand, is a lot more abstract. Your character is fighting or thwarting schemes, but it's really just a numbers management game. There are some interesting card combinations, and some sense that you're using your character's specific abilities to "solve" the scenario, and that's great fun. It's still not as immediate, or strategic--in a low-level, combat sense--as SoTM, but it's better than Marvel Legendary, which is really just a deck-builder with even higher-level mechanics.

i have to say this is the only LCG that i have managed to keep up with and for me its customisability is what makes it a winner for me and as some one who comes from the final fantasy tcg the way you discard icons for resources to play cards is very similar to that game(minus its backups and 2 activation phases) i enjoy arkham horror a lot but i feel they suit different moods... my advice to people looking at starting one is how do you want to feel because arkham makes you feel weak... and marvel makes you feel powerful. i have yet to try lotr because im worried i will end up having to buy it all. great video from the past guys lol Stay Hexy!

One thing about approachability is that each hero comes with a pre-built starter deck, so you don't have to deck construct if you don't want to.

Jessie, hearing your concerns about accessing rules clarifications made me download the newer rules ref (than I have from the core set) and that is going to be my quick go-to guide for referencing on the fly

I tend to enjoy the game when I get it out, but the initial setup always puts me off. I know it's not Gloomhaven levels of setup, but deciding what decks to play, refreshing myself on the rules, building the decks themselves; there's just a few too many barriers between me and the game for the mechanical simplicity of it all. Maybe I just need to pick up a character pack that appeals to me more than the core box decks have.

The beautiful thing about Marvel Champions and why it should not put anyone off is that every product is self-contained and works straight out of the package. Each Hero Pack comes with a complete, playable deck. Each villain pack is a complete, playable scenario deck. Sure, some people are going to feel pressured to be "completionists" and want to own everything but that's really not at all necessary. Just buy the hero or villain sets that appeal to you and buy them as you're ready for a splash of new content. I absolutely love this game...but there are several packs and campaign boxes that I won't bother picking up because they don't personally interest me. Also, because the game isn't a competitive one, there is absolutely ZERO pressure to have "all the best cards" like you would experience in a versus game like Magic, Pokemon or Yugioh, for example. It's honestly one of the best games of its type on the market right now in multiple ways, including accessibility. Cheers!
@lavernkid2 жыл бұрын
Agreed that this a lifestyle game. Love this game so much and own everything so far and don’t know when I’ll stop purchasing content since they keep being creative. Yes, would a narrative be fun? Sure, but I think it would reduce its replayability since it would lose its surprises. Price point is a real barrier, so, I say start with the core box, and just spend a month playing before getting more. Also, my favorite characters are Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Antman.
@chrisnenzel5822 жыл бұрын
I really want to love this game. I really do. But two test plays at the FLGS left me on the fence and my GF uninterested... ...I want a game like Cthulhu Death May Die with non-Zombie Marvel Superheroes... or a game like Marvel United with more depth and mission driven narrative. ...and I don't think it exists.
@SuperDoggy992 жыл бұрын
I've been saying, for years, that FFG should have used the Imperial Assault and/or Descent mechanics to create a mission-driven campaign "dungeon crawler" for Marvel. The story-driven nature of the campaigns, combined with miniatures, environment boards/maps, combat abilities, etc. would be amazing. Instead, FFG pulled a "Star Wars Legion" and focused on Crisis Protocol. I don't get it. Comic book themed content is story-driven--it's not based on a "war gaming" model. The great thing about imperial assault is that it has both a campaign mode and a skirmish, competitive mode. Again, super hero themed content fits this perfectly.
@tedduby23462 жыл бұрын
Jesse, you have to loosen up with keeping up with the rules updates. It is not a competitive game, but cooperative. Just be ok with not being a world class player and have fun.

There's a lot of product, yeah, but the game doesn't require a lot of deckbuilding skill from the players until expert mode. You should be able to take out at least Rhino and Klaw with just prebuilt decks, and maybe even Ultron if you have the right heroes.

I don't know anything about MCU. A game of this is like a single comic book. It is also very quick to set up and play, you don't have to refer to your log to see what to do next or how to do it. As long as you know that it, and a quick epic battle is what you seek, this is really good.

On the theme/storytelling aspect, I sort of disagree with J. 1. I'm not a Marvel/Superhero fan and the hero pre-built decks are enough to build its own story and gives context. Yes, some references may not be obvious, but after playing 2-3 games, you feel that superhero strengths and weaknesses. 2. Lore/Storytelling: Even if there is not a lot of flavour text, cards and encounters reads like a comic book. Each cards/encounter adds to the "tableau" and creates a story as you play. And because there is not much to read, it's perfect for people who don't like to be distracted by backstory/lore/etc. If you play with someone who despise roleplaying and storytelling, they won't bother have 1-2 sentences read to them as the game develops. No halt to read paragraphs of text that doesn't change anything to the mechanic. The game ark is also very good: each time you fight a villain you'll be surprised. The encounter may end up being easier or harder depending how which event occurs. So, you must adapt, you also have to balance the risk/reward. Sometimes, I take a risk expecting to recover in the next round, but I get smashed because I went too far. On the other end, sometime I'm super conservative and I can drag a game: which isn't a good thing in MC, because the villain has also more time to fight you or to advance its scheme. MC have a good design and it's so easy to get to the table (with prebuilt decks).

This one hasn't captured me. I have almost everything for Lord of the Rings (just not bothered buying the nightmare decks), and everything except the newest pack for Arkham Horror (payday soon. :) ). But this doesn't hit the spot - I have a large amount of it, but the lack of narrative, and the fact that it is both Marvel and Disney (neither of whom I like for various reasons) just means I haven't kept up with this one.
@brence19842 жыл бұрын
Lord of the Rings kinda let me down as you almost “needed” certain expansions cards in your deck to even get a chance. Arkham Horror is a fantastic game, yet I feel bad playing it casually as I feel that I am not going to replay them anytime soon. Marvel Champions has that plug and play style gameplay which just lets you get whatever heroes you like and play whatever scenario captures your imagination.
