The problem is also that Marvel products nowadays are about 70-80% CGI, which means they're pretty much 70% animated movies while having a live action's deadlines. Animation studios are, surprise surprise, given deadlines befitting that of what is needed for animation. I don't like Lightyear, but that movie looks damn good and tons of love and time was obviously put into the visuals.

I am not sure why MCU movies are still treated as live action films in terms of schedule. A bunch of their films use more special effects than Roger Rabbits and Spaceballs combined, and those films are considered hybrids

Very true. Vfx takes a lot of iterations to get correct (especially the animation part) and vfx artists can only work so many hours per day before the Supreme Court gets involved for slavery

@@Dave102693 to be fair, Roger Rabbit got the excuse of animation that is deliberately cartoonish vs Marvel's animation that tries to look more realistic. It's not really a fair comparing the 2 films since it's more of a apple vs orange comparison. A more appropriate one would be Life of Pi or Dune 2021. Those films have insanely beautiful and organic looking 3D "realistic" animation while costing much less than 200 million to produce, compared to most Phase 4 films on average cost more than that yet looking much worse

@@RedYoshi-ct1wx COVID did screw up the order of the original Phase 4 line-up, i.e. Multiverse of Madness was supposed to directly come after WandaVision; but it was clear that after 2020, if you search the original line-up they were going to bring much more MCU content anyway, with 4 films and 4 shows within the original plan for 2021. What we actually got on 2021 was still 4 shows and 4 films -- the difference being that Black Widow, TFATWS and The Eternals were supposed to release earlier in 2020 while the rest of the stuff we have had so far barring Moon Knight would have been on 2021.

100% MCU fans need to stop with the “It’s because of COVID that the CGI is bad” The Batman was shot during COVID too. The film looked beautiful. At times I wasn’t sure if it was green screen or shot on location or not in some shots. Then there’s MoM and Thor. It was PAINFULLY obvious that almost every scene was in front of a greenscreen. It takes you out of the movie if you actually pay attention to it. There’s no excuse. I’d rather Marvel put out less content that was of great quality vs whatever they’ve been doing for the past few years.

There is a Marvel traveling exhibition that is going around with a variety of items from Marvel history, including everything from original pieces of comic art to movie props. Sure, it wasn't used in NWH but the mask itself is indeed safe and being conserved in a museum setting.

I did see a Twitter post where a VFX worker claimed that Marvel doesn't accept pre-vis shots unless they're 90% what they would look like in the movie, (e.g. the CGI equivalent of a storyboard) and that artists have to create an almost finished scene just to show to producers at Marvel who can then tell them to start from scratch. Most other companies requested VFX are fine with a pre-vis just being grey models as to not overwork VFX artists.

James Gunn's marvel movies are an exception to this issue because of his meticulous planning. He finalizes the script, character designs, storyboards, sets way ahead of time. So the VFX artists have plenty of time to work on a big CGI enviorment because Gunn finalized the design very early on.

That's not entirely accurate, Gunn would have limited control about how much time he has. And they even had a vfx artist react where they straight up said they just kind of designed ego however they wanted after filming

Oh yeah, no matter how much you plan it, the VFX artists will still be working on it until the last minute. I guess what I meant was his planning prevents the VFX artists from having to do stupid shit like change a characters costume, or change the way their powers look or suddenly have to animate stuff for a brand new scene the filmmaker decided to add last minute. Gunn also shoots as much practically as he can. The prison set in the first movie is still one of the biggest sets made for a MCU film.

I think Everything Everywhere All At Once was a great example of how to balance CGI and practical effects. They obviously had a decent amount of CGI throughout the movie as it is a big multiverse action movie, but they also relied on practical effects for everything that they could. You don't need to CGI things you can do with practical effects so they didn't. It made it feel real while still keeping the fantasy.

I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that Marvel uses CG for EVERYTHING. They should build more practical sets and use more practical effects so that the CG can be reserved for more larger things that *actually require* CG, which would probably give the artists more time to focus on the little things that matter. Not, for example, wasting that time digitally recreating a suit over a suit that’s already practical -.- Also; practical just looks more pleasing to the eyes.

This reminds me of the comparison between Rogue One and the Kenobi tv show, with the scenes of Vader's castle. Where in Rogue One the lighting came from outside the castle as if the light came from the windows, while in Kenobi the lighting was seen from the inside, as if there were lamps (which is not supposed to be)

It’s upsetting that visually Kenobi didn’t look too great. Especially since it was such an anticipated series. Some of the directing and cinematography choices were bad. Which surprised me because The Mandalorian looks good. Also the most recent Disney plus shows like Moon Knight & Ms. Marvel managed to have some nice looking visuals.

Why get a professional to hand create many helmet props for Thor and Jane, when you can get one artist to create both and a editor or whatever to put it over them. No risk of them breaking. I totally agree that Marvel has an over reliance on spotty CGI. One element I recently noticed comparing Spider-Man movies is that The Amazing Spider-Man films and even Rami’s Spider-Man 3 have both had bigger budgets compared to the MCUs Spider-Man. I think it boils down to Disney/ Marvel making to many projects that all have a subpar budget. I really don’t care about how a movie looks if the story is good, but it is a problem that should be mentioned.

I can honestly say that it was the first time, at least for me, that Gotham felt like a real place. Like, a genuine city that I full believed exists somewhere on the East coast of the US. Maybe I'm biased because a lot of it was filmed here in Liverpool and I could recognise the landmarks, but still the cinematography was absolutely top tier. It was such a revelation that a big blockbuster film could still have fantastic visuals and colour palette and not just dull grey-scaled backgrounds like in nearly every MCU property.

I just watched Thor love and thunder, I hear everything you said. The cgi in this movie, was not amazing, but as phase 4 movies go, it is the best. There were shots like with the masks (where Jane was going over her catchphrases), that it looked bad and could’ve switched to a practical piece. But the overall movie looked way more balanced and lifelike compared to No Way home, and sadly even like what happened with doctor strange. This movie felt more visceral, tangible and overall had scale. Something that these recent movies, which had promised scale, but find themselves becoming very small. Now I do wish the company fixes itself, but as the slander of Thor 4 goes, it’s not amazing but it is great as phase 4 goes.

The civil war CGI for Spider-Man was mid to me the CGI for Black panther and the Black panther movie was mid to me actually all at CGi And the CGI for iron Man's suits and infinity war and in game was terrible compared to the very first iron Man movie when you saw him use the Mark III suit in the Middle East The suit damn near look real in the first iron Man movie

I wish corporations would learn that we don't need 5-6+ projects a year to be entertained and for them to make money. But two reasons for it are, of course, capitalism, but also because a lot of people today get bored of something really quick. So it's easy for executives to think they if more and new content isn't put out, they'll lose our interest. I absolutely dislike the excessive use of CGI in Marvel movies. They can't even shoot a backyard scene in a backyard. I absolutely cringed when I found out that Thor's swords in the Hulk fight scene on Sakaar were CGI. But, for all the hate I have for Marvel's over dependence on CGI in phase 4, I absolutely loved what they did with Black Bolt's suit because of scheduling conflicts. You'd never know it was CGI'd on him.

Great points ! Completely agree that with directors and DP who know their craft, are passionate about it, and want to do as much as possible in-camera, you can get insane results ! The Batman, Top Gun Maverick, and Everything Everywhere All At Once are indeed the 3 most formidable and unforgetting examples of that (and they all came out this year !), and it did take a big dump on my pleasure watching Thor Love and Thunder. Not that the movie is bad itself, it's just that in the emotional and visual department, we've seen movies that were so much stronger than that, made for half, if not a fraction of its budget. Wouldn't it be lovely if the MCU hired these directors who know where to put VFX or not in, and get a much more streamlined pipeline, helping the struggling VFX studios in the process ?

Fantastic video. Very concise and to the point. I love Marvel and the MCU and have watched all of their films but, there's no denying there seems to be a steady decline in their visuals and also in how they manage their resources. It is absurd that Thor had a helmet in the first film yet for some bizarre reason they insisted on using cgi helmets in the film. It speaks to how the capitalist mentality of profit at all costs and the obsession with churning out as much media as possible has really damaged the quality of their films and worse still is exploiting hard working VFX artists who don't have the protection of a union. It honestly really sucks and lends a whole lot of credence to the criticism that the MCU is essentially the fast food chain of cinema churning out a lot of content really quickly but at the expense of both the product's quality and the treatment of their workers. Honestly, the quality of the MCU isn't what's the really important issue here. The treatment of non-unionised VFX artists is disgraceful and speaks to the awful and exploitative system corporations use to weasel out of treating workers fairly. I honestly think VFX artists should go on mass strike similar to the numerous writers strikes that halted Hollywood.

I am a VFX artist and when I first clicked on this video I expected once again some random dude taking trash about vfx without having any idea of what he's talking about and just repeating whatever he read on twitter about some sequence of some random movie being practical fx and looking better than CGI (thanks for explaining that the correct term is VFX) and stuff like that but I was very happy to see that finally someone has made some research about the vfx industry and its flaws and the VFX themselves. I was also happy to see that when you mentioned the LED stagecraft technology you spoke about the problems that this tech has and that it is not as magical as it looks like. I have to say that this problems that the VFX industry has are not happening just with Marvel, they've been happening since forever with almost every movie or show that has been made (usually it is not so extreme as finishing the movie the day before the release but they still happen in some way). It is just that Marvel is the most massive and popular franchise we have at the moment and it calls more attention than the others. Anyway you did a very good research. People would go crazy if they knew all the shit that is going on around the world regarding vfx production and the weird tasks we have to do sometimes (but we can't talk about it because of our non disclosure agreements). Keep making videos like this, congrats on this one. BTW, English is not my first language so I hope everything I wrote is understandable.

The volume is excellent... when used properly. In The Batman or The Mandalorian, it works excellently. The problem comes when they are so committed to using the volume that the quality of the product is obviously worse, with the main example being the Book of Boba Fett. Marvel really needs to boss up and start taking more time, but I doubt they will.

Excellent video. It really is disheartening to find out such a mega company like Marvel would be responsible for such an unjust accusation. As some one who us a huge fan of comics, and aspires to be both an actor and a concept artist, I understand how delicate the VFX team is crucial to most movies. Is there is a bit of a conspicuous deficit in the cgi of some of Marvel's projects? Yes. But that doesn't take away from the amazing content they've been putting out recently. I do think that these artists need to compensated better and fairly for their work , along with healthier work environments and deadlines. All in all, I don't think this dilemma will last forever, I trust that marvel will remedy the situation at some point

Even if they have a story they want to tell, a business wants to produce it as either quickly or cheaply (or both) as they possibly can. A couple things: Unionizing can provide better pay, but work hours are still long in the industry. The most recent IATSE conversation, from when I was more clued in on them, was about shorter hours as 16-18 hour shifts were happening with the production I was on thankfully stopping around 13. As well as allowing for proper lunch breaks as those would sometimes happen during shooting. Second, the LEDs are supper cool, but also unreliable as they currently stand. As with all technology there are a few bugs that can hit production hard. This is outside if the skills needed to make it look right.

I also like to believe lack of good reference (and also not using them when present) is also a contributing factors to vfx looking subpar. Filming entirely in a green screen stage and having to figure things out in post would make any artist bash their head against the wall. Even you said, filming in stagecraft doesn't solve all of the issues present in production, but it certainly helps when you have good reference for, say lighting on surfaces if you need to fix it in post.

I mean you can this with the recent post pandemics films. Those that got delayed (strange 2, while not perfect I thought was still really great), look great especially with how it works with the atmosphere and aesthetic of the story so well. Meanwhile, BW and Spider-Man which didn’t get delays besides the original covid one (in which little to no progress was made) had terrible cg. Another is that they are using cg too much for things that do have solutions are rather because it’s quicker and cheaper to do it post than pre-production. Spidey’s cw suit, the portal suit, makes sense. Goblins helmet other examples that may be due to filming difficulty, well many have been solved before for decades, and even if not, one could be found by a multi million production. Basically, boils down to them pumping films and now shows out. I think this can be relieved if they do more down to earth shows or movies. You know that Coulson’s short skit of him the shop? Or Mandarin in prison? Those were great (and had great writing). They talked about how they want to separate the space and earth stuff means this should be possible, but the earth stuff is now just as fantastical as the space stuff, so there’s not that big of a difference
