One of the problems of the film is we're not sure why ppl see Mystique as a hero because from what we saw the last film with her pointing a gun at the president the public shouldn't see her as a hero. We're not sure if it's a retcon by the film or propaganda. It's never fully explored. So it's understandable why you guys are at odds on what happened. Kind of like what they did with Wolverine, Stryker, and Mystique debacle.

@robertwild94477 жыл бұрын
I actually enjoy watching ASM2 a lot, but I don't think It's a very good film. Not in a guilty pleasure way, there are just some parts I really like and some parts I really don't. Apocalypse, on the other hand, I understand why some fans enjoy it (hell, I WANT to enjoy it), but I just can't. Not that I think it's a terrible movie, but watching it was such an awkward experience for me after how great I thought DOFP was. It's more than just being disappointed, and my problem wasn't that I didn't like it as much as DOFP. Apocalypse was a weird case of déjà vu for me. I saw The Last Stand in theaters when I was 10 years old and I enjoyed it at the time, but even then I had a lot of problems with the script. With Apocalypse, it seemed like no lessons had been learned after this entire franchise. It's hard for me to enjoy Apocalypse as a "turn your brain off" kind of movie, because it was the first two X-men movies that taught me how to think about story and characterization in superhero movies.

@VNGill7 жыл бұрын
Cap is definitely right that the Wolverine reveal is frustrating partly because Stryker wasn't intended to be Mystique when the ending for DOFP was shot, so it just feels like Singer and Kinberg didn't want to deal it in this film and pretended that the original envisioned ending was the one we got. Again, very frustrating and really indicative of just how rushed and poorly thought-out this movie was. It's still an entertaining film with some good moments and ideas, and I'd put it on the level of Spider-Man 3 as far as "potential vs execution" is concerned.
@VNGill7 жыл бұрын
That would make sense, since they collect Wolverine's blood in the post-credits scene, but I'm skeptical that it would've been the whole point of that excursion to Alkali Lake from a writing point of view. Do you have the source on that Kinberg admission?
@VNGill7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to post that. Like Kinberg says in the link you posted, the post-credits scene obviously served the purpose of setting up X-23. But it still could've been just a tacked-on ending to set up the next film, like the mid-credits scene from The Wolverine that set up DOFP. I don't think we can say for sure that setting up X-23 was the whole reason the writers took the story back to Alkali Lake and had Wolverine in the film. It seems like if that were the case, then the blood being collected would've been more than just a post-credits stinger. Another thing about it that has me curious is Jean saying that she "found a piece of his past and gave it back to him." Unless I missed something, that was definitely not followed up on in Logan. Also, before Logan came out, Bryan Singer had said that Mister Sinister was going to appear in it, which was wrong. Keep in mind as well that the briefcase in the scene says Essex, but how the blood went from Essex to Transigen hasn't been made clear. So Singer evidently didn't know very much about Logan, making it even more unlikely that he and the other Apocalypse writers were actively thinking about it while developing the film. Obviously Fox, James Mangold or somebody clued them in for the post-credits stinger, but even then it seems like they still got the details wrong, like Essex and Transigen. So again, I think it's a safer assumption that the Apocalypse post-credits scene was just tacked-on and not the whole reasoning for having Wolverine in the film. I think they just got lucky that the opportunity presented itself to retroactively say, "Oh, that's where they got Wolverine's blood from."
@stanlee35807 жыл бұрын
I was reading an old interview with Kinberg when Days of Future Past released and he basically said that Wolverine was going to eventually get his adamantium. Mystique saving Logan was just to give her a hero moment similar to what she did earlier in the film in Vietnam. So they didn't change anything, that was always the plan.
@EightPageProductions7 жыл бұрын
Simon Kinberg's excuse for the Mystique/Stryker thing: "One of the things we talk about in Days of Future Past - there’s a scene where Hank/Beast talks about the immutability of time. Basically, you can change the way the future goes, but it finds its way back. So while we don’t show how, it found its way back to Wolverine being part of Weapon X and under the thumb of Stryker, that’s the idea."
@stanlee35807 жыл бұрын
He actually said something similar when Days of Future Past released. Wolverine was always going to get his metal claws.

@hyuthestampede7 жыл бұрын
The Apocalypse powers point is kinda more problematic in the film. in the comics the idea is supposed to be that he has total molecular control over his body, that in turn allows him to basically give himself whatever mutation he wanted barring reality breaking stuff. this is why his powers have always felt slightly ill'defined in any incarnation but at least in comics there's a reasonable explanation. but in the film the idea is that each new body he takes over allows him access to it's power, like in the beginning where he took over that bald guy (Oscar issac without the make up) and gained the regeneration power, which is why he (to Eric's point) is able to survive to the present. The issue there is then it makes all the ability's he does demonstrate fell really plot convenient. He can teleport to get anywhere he wants, he can enhance mutant powers, can interface with technology, has some limited telepathy based ability (i'm assuming, since if it's not limited why does he need Charles in the first place?) and can make energy fields. really nice he managed to find mutants with all those powers thousands of years ago right?? you know being the first mutant and all.....right?
@hyuthestampede7 жыл бұрын

The thing about Mystique being Stryker at the end of DoFP, I'm actually glad they dropped that. I couldn't imagine them going in a direction that made much sense with that setup. It also doesn't help that Singer has flatout said it wasn't a written moment and was done at pretty much the last minute without any real thought put into it.
@MM2Dylan7 жыл бұрын

I agree, the Magneto family stuff is underwhelming. It's basically a dusted off scene from the Origins: Magneto script, only there it made more sense because it was one step on the road to Erik becoming Magneto, not whatever the hell this was.
@agentofchaos74567 жыл бұрын
It's actually from the comics, Origins: Magneto was just pulling from that. The thing about the Magneto family stuff here is that they were trying to explore the time immutable theory established in DOFP as they mention in interviews. Erik is not meant to might to settle down and so time basically fixed itself, removing the family and put him on the path of becoming Magneto again. In the film Magneto and Apocalypse keep talking about how Erik "can't escape it,' "it always ends the same". When you look at it with the context of that theory that kinda makes Erik's story becomes better(imo). The problem is that the film should have had Beast remind the audience of it and many more people would have gotten it. If you look at the new timeline films (DOFP, XMA, and LOGAN) as a whole you'll notice that they parallel X2, X3, and The Wolverine.
@standardtom4837 жыл бұрын
There's a difference between a genuine underlying theme/plot thread that subtly weaves itself into the narrative and a fan theory. As much as it works better than what we're presented with, I don't buy that any of this is happening and I suspect you're giving this film too much credit. As you said, Beast doesn't remind the audience of this - thus, it doesn't feel like it's a genuine follow-on from that speech as much as it is 'status quo is god' syndrome. Magneto and Apocalypse's lines sound more like a generic statement on Magneto's life (especially since Apocalypse can't know any of the timeline stuff) trying to excuse him going bad again. Also the idea that they're paralleling X3 seems like intentionally shooting themselves in the foot. Singer on many occasions makes fun of that film and seems very aware of how badly it was received. I cannot believe he decided to parallel it, he'd have to know it wouldn't be a good idea.
@agentofchaos74567 жыл бұрын
It's not really a fan theory since the director and writer have been saying long before Apocalypse's release that they were playing with the idea that characters are moving towards their immutable place in this film(and future films). Magneto was definitely one of those characters as shown by the conservation he has with Charles at the end of this being the exact same one he had in X1. The recently announced The Dark Phoenix movie screams they are indeed doing that, but hopefully they actually bring it up in that film. By parallels with X3 I mean things like mutants and humans being at place until Magneto strikes, training in the danger room with Sentinels, and the Phoenix stuff.
@standardtom4837 жыл бұрын
But the problem is that Magneto doesn't end up in that place at the end of the film - he starts 'good' (or whatever he is, out of the way I guess) then goes 'bad' then goes 'good' again; the entire thing seems to be pointless and doesn't point towards moving him back to where he was in the original films. Is there a middle ground between fan theory and subtext where Word of God says one thing and the actual film says another, by any chance? I feel like that would be the word to use.
@agentofchaos74567 жыл бұрын
Magneto did eventually turn good in the original timeline as well as shown by DOFP, where he admits he was in the wrong and taking responsibility for the war happening.

An idea about something from futures past casing apocalypse to come back. Idea one: With Trask still alive in this universe he funds an excavation in Egypt looking for ancient mutant mummies or something. Like how in the mummy 2 they dig him up and he kills everyone. Idea 2: Not real sure howd they make this clear in the film, but without setniels to fend them off mutant cultist fight their way to some Egyptian artifact that awakens him due to some genetic beacon or whatnat.
@ItsMichaelReid7 жыл бұрын
Idea 1: That would've been very convenient that Trask inadvertently starts ANOTHER end of world plot. They should just have said that as a result of Wolverine going back to his time and having the future change so dramatically, kitty Pryde's "Time energy" created a pulse that rippled through the time stream and as a result it awakened Apocalypse. Think of it as when someone drops a weight on a carpet, the sound of the weight hitting is muffled but you still feel the vibrations DONE.

The Judaism is there with this Erik kinda. We have his memory that represents the point between rage and serenity as his family on Passover if I remember correctly. it's not much but it is there, that and so much of his character in First Class is paralleled with German folklore and the Golum of Prague which I really wish was talked about here if they are going for the faith angle. We have a cult leader who thinks he is a god yet we don't talk about Erik being a man of faith. Same goes for Nightcrawller Apocalypse has so much they could have done but they refuse to do anything with him. Like him meaning nothing and never explaining his view could work if the point is he is just a spoiled brat who does not really have a grand point of view but just thinks he is better than everyone else and does not understand how anything works. That would be so much better but instead we get.......what? He just sits around and vaguely says things.
@redleaderantilles12637 жыл бұрын
I will start off by saying, for once I am actually going to disagree with Eric on a Marvel film. I quite enjoyed this film. While it is far from perfect and DOFP is far better, I think this is the most X-Men of the movies and is what should be used as a basis moving forward in terms of tone and the like. Apocalypse falls apart as a bad guy and Mystique is really shoved in here, the plot ruins bits of the set up from DOFP, and Erik is very poorly handled, BUT (strong but) I see this as the necessary step to get to more comic book esq X-Men films. Not that that makes the film itself better but it makes me far more optimistic for what's to come, namely a focus on Scott and the school. I just really love that we have a good chance to get a consistent cast with these really good young actors. Now I know the next one is set 10 years later and that makes me sad but I still have hope that they might do more with these kids in the time between at some point. I want this to be the direct of the films. Maybe more serialized and once every 2 years set in real time. I know that's not what we are getting but I guess I just hope they will wise up soon and do this. But yeah I still think this film is just ok but far better than people give it credit for.
@makura57057 жыл бұрын
I know this movie is a mess but I think a lot of the ideas would've really worked if more time was spent on them individually. The problem is there is just too much going on. The weapon x thing should be cut entirely. It's dumb and there's nothing too it. I actually like the tone of the film. I like that it doesn't feel like any of the other Singer films. A parking lot of the somewhat petty nitpicks they have with this movie can really be answered by paying attention to tha movie(s) despite what attention you feel it deserves: What is the extent of Apocalypse's power+his full powerset - We don't know(save 4 tha healing factor)because we haven't been keeping up with the mutants' bodies he's been taking up until his betrayal_a legit though minor nitpick as far as I'm concerned| What did Apocalypse mean by "systems" in his rant - From when he talks to Storm(who is never once called Ororo Munroe in this movie nor gets her blue eyes ever)after he kills the vendors she stole from and she mentions that there are laws & systems in place for things like that_the most minor of nitpicks| Magneto was not at the X-Mansion adjacent to Quicksilver's arrival - Kinda true but he was there for a second when they snag tha Professor which is how long it takes Quik to rescue everyone from the resulting explosion to stop em_Yes I am so pedantic as to address this to begin with| Why does Apocalypse want to rule tha planet - ...Seriously...you need an explanation as to why a villain wants to rule tha world? Well anyway he wants to because he sees himself as the most powerful and can't stand that the genetically inferior has taken control of everything; sounds awfully similar to Magneto's reasoning in the 1st film_Not quite minor but still a small nitpick| How did Stryker arrive so quickly after it all goes to heck - I imagine they found out "somehow" that Xavier had taken MacTaggert back to the X-Mansion with him and they were "watching" keeping their distance knowing he can mind-wipe as he pleases but then moves in when tha thing happens_Finally a full-on legit nitpick I can stand behind| Bellyaching about how much the freakin "flight-suits" that they just happened to find(enough for all of em+they fit)in the Alkali Base resembled the 1st film uniforms - You would just be bellyaching about how they just so happen to find suits that resemble their '80s outfits in an enemy stronghold like a power-up in a video game+I don't understand the complaint about the uniforms at the end either_waste of time| Control your powers & embrace them are interchangeable - You mean like how Xavier tried to control Mystique & tha Phoenix Force and how well that turned out; sure Scott can't "control" his eye beams is what he meant but embrace is a metaphorical term(you should have enough imagination to understand)that means adopting a method to work in tandem with how your powers work as is shown with Scott falling over a few times before getting tha hang of it_A minor nitpick but one I didn't expect from this channel| Complains that no one dies in this movie then complains that Angel died and forgot that Havok died as well - The complaint of Angel's death may have more to do with him dying a villain and not living long enough to see himself become tha hero we know him to be in canon; my issue is with everyone who died offscreen in Days of Future Past_Standard nitpick/not paying attention| How tha Phoenix Force works here - I thought they clearly demonstrated that she unleashed a telepathic attack to take down Apocalypse which is why he can't fight properly anymore & attempts to skedaddle_Would've been legit but pay better attention| Jean "heals" Logan's mind - ...Why do people sexualize this scene...that is all...speaking of| Psylocke's leotard - Did we really need a scene of Apocalypse offering her a custom get-up then saying,"Good As Is" or similar to what they said Olivia Munn really said_borderline SJW nitpick but I've been called an SJW a parking lot so yeah+fun fact-Psylocke was originally British then swapped into a Japanese ninja body in canon| I could keep going to be honest but that's all I felt like addressing right now but ask and I might keep going|

This was among the most disappointing movies of 2016 but I didn't think it was that bad, just a heavily mixed bag. On the bright side, this is one of the only movies I've ever seen where it actually looks better in 3D than in standard 2D. A lot of the special effects look substandard regularly, but look better integrated in 3D. Based on the interviews with Singer and company, this movie was going to be a deconstruction of cults and how religion plays a part in people's lives. Really meaty subtexts. Instead, we got something that never really lands, thematically. Oh well, I can still turn my brain off to some degree and act like I'm watching something more thoughtful than it actually is. And I guess it entertains me enough.

To keep it simple, I'll just do it note style. BADS - Apocalypse was a huge disappointment. - Apocalypse's power was bland and lame. - Apocalypse touching the television for info was lazy writing. - Apocalypse gives others power like Angel's metal wings but can't upgrade himself? - Story wasn't interesting. - Mystique/Jennifer Lawrence was awful. - Plot device of having McTaggart awake Apocalypse was too simple and lame. - Love Fassbender as Magneto but his story was out of place. - Storm's origin wasn't done with love. - Having Havok die was pointless. - Having Quick Silver scene overshadowed Havok's death was the worst choice ever. - The film was too choppy. Going from Apocalypse back to Magneto then back to Apocalypse then back to X-Men then back to Apocalypse. Too much recycling format. - The motivation for the horseman was awful with no heart. - The way they defeated Apocalypse was a disappointment. - QuickSilver not telling Magneto their relationship was pointless. - Having Magneto restoring the school was lame. - Mystique leading the X team is the worse choice ever. I just don't like this film at all. Personally X-Men DOFP is my favorite comic book film of all time. This film was just rushed, script was awful, acting was phoned in. Even though this film was bad, I'm still optimistic about future X-Men films.

Nothing in this film is interesting or elaborated. None of the religious ideas are fleshed out and brought to the forefront, and that hurts Apocalypse's character since his character is geared towards that kind of commentary, yet nothing is done with it. There's no argument to be made from Apocalypse's perspective, and, consequently, that affects the heroes because they don't really have anything to counter. It's just some loud blue mutant blowing stuff up in the most bland and generic way possible. There's no humanity (or mutanity?) or depth to any of the encounters or character interactions and it's all paint by numbers. Not to mention the Weapon X/Mystique thing makes no sense, and the Weapon X segment in general adds nothing to the film. If you're going to set up Mystique being Stryker at the end of Days of Future Past than commit to it instead of just doing it to have a punchier ending. I know some people explain it away by saying that the filmmakers' intentions were to explore time being immutable and to set up Logan, but I don't care. The end result hurts the film and doesn't add anything of merit to the piece. You can't solely use the filmmakers' words to explain away problems in the movie.

Harley Quinn's Epic Rape Face That's not brought to the forefront. That's only a passing mention. The story itself isn't about those religious aspects. You don't get a pass for just mentioning some religious aspects without actually crafting a character or story around those aspects. Apocalypse doesn't base his worldview on religion, there's no larger social commentary being made with in relation to religion, and none of the protagonists challenge Apocalypse's worldview or religious subtext. The reason Mystique makes no sense because they should have followed up on the end of Days of Future Past. You can't just use something as a more exciting ending with no intention on continuing that story. Furthermore, the entire Weapon X sequence adds nothing to this film. Setting up Logan doesn't do anything for this film, and doesn't really do much to setup Logan either.

Harley Quinn's Epic Rape Face That's not all that interesting though because the film needs more connective tissue to tie his behavior to religion. We've seen countless villains with the same behavior that aren't ostensibly being used as a commentary on religion. What we see from Apocalypse can be boiled down to blue mutant yelling about stuff and destroying things. More needs to be done (visual motifs, lines of dialogue, symbolism, etc.) to tie that yelling and destruction to religion and that needs to be the crux of the story not just a supplement that can be easily missed. Otherwise it's just a villain creating a problem for the heroes to stop. I don't think it's really needed to setup Zander Rice's motivation though as Logan killing his father could have easily happened in X2. We didn't need that in Apocalypse and it takes away much needed time away from characters that are more important to the film.

I remember reading an interview back in 2014 basically saying that Wolverine was going to get his adamantium one way or the another. Likely through Apocalypse based on concept art. So it was inconsequential from the get-go. And the movie Logan does explain how he got his adamantium.

I kinda knew this movie was going to be terrible just from looking at that god awful first trailer.

They do explain how Apocalypse managed to survive so long. The body he currently inhabits has a healing factor like Wolverine which makes him immortal.
