I'm one of those who watched every episode of Marvel Mania. This was a great series, one of the best you've done on Geekvolution. Kudos to you both, Cap and Eric. Thanks for being so much fun to listen to.

1:12:20 - The actor Eric is referring to here is Scott Adkins who was also Weapon XI in X-Men Origins: Wolverine...which was another role for which he rendered even less recognizable|

It's funny, Cap talking about jumping ahead to the action, then going back to the "boring stuff," with Hannibal Lecter in the movie.

I watched ever Marvel Mania commentary, the best ones were the ones in the 2000s, specifically the X-men films.
@angelcastaneda5295 жыл бұрын
This seems like a cool idea for a series. I want to something similar but I guess not online. But I should definitely go back and watch the ones from the 70s up to the 2000s with my partner since she’s only seen the MCU of course.

The piece you guys are talking about at the end is called "Go For Baroque" so it's European in that 1600-1750 period that gave us Bach, Vivaldi, Handel ... that kind of thing.

If you're talking about the basketball player that Strange goes to in order to find out about Kamar-Taj then that's Benjamin Bratt, and he was the detective that Patience Philips dates in Catwoman.

Objectively, this isn't a bad movie, but I was REALLY let down by it. Aside from the ending with Dormammu, and that one token "third eye awakening" scene, this movie was very generic, and obvious. And the thing that irritates the most is the excuse that people give when defending it "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I hope we get a more daring film with the sequel.
@Ren_Davis05317 жыл бұрын
I don't have a problem with the Sling Ring. It's just a magical artifact that allows them to teleport. Other fantasy stories have magical abilities specifically tied to an object. Don't see the problem here. I agree with the Staff of Living Tribunal, but what specifically makes the ring a problem in the way that the Cloak of Levitation isn't? One is for teleportation and one is for flight. What's the problem with the ring? Maybe it's more of a taste thing like some people have with Spider-Man's web shooters.
@StevenErnest7 жыл бұрын
If they'd used it less frequently, I wouldn't have minded. But they used it constantly. I prefer the comic version where the Doctor and associates use actual magical spells... something the film avoided.
@Ren_Davis05317 жыл бұрын
StevenErnest So basically it's the execution of the magic as a whole not just the concept of the Sling Ring. I agree with the execution of magic in the film feeling pedestrian, but I don't see how the basic idea of the Sling Ring is pedestrian, when it's established that certain spells and magic are tied to magical objects. Certainly not the first magic series to tie significant abilities to certain objects or potions. I just look at it like their mode of transportation similar to us having cars. Ironically, the Ancient One says that pre-magic Strange is looking at the world through a keyhole, and the execution of magic in this film feels like looking through a keyhole.
@StevenErnest7 жыл бұрын
Right, I don't exactly think the Sling Ring is pedestrian; you make good points. I mainly feel the device was overused. I like your metaphor of the keyhole. I know they have to simplify things a bit for a mass audience, but they also should raise the audience up to new perceptions of fantasy; that's good art.

I really, *realy* like this movie. I understand where people come from when they call it generic or too safe, but it really works for me.

This is a fun movie, but i agree it certainly has problems. Way to much Tell not Show, and the "you where predestined to be a magic user" thing urks me the wrong way too. That being said, the performances are fantastic, they elevate this material to something very enjoyable. As a fan of The Oath by Brian K Vaughan, it was cool they used some of that book in this film. Thank you for this series, it was a lot of fun, I've found some films that where a nice surprise. The 80's Punisher movie for example.

I really don't care for the films climax. There are no longer any consequences for anything going forward. If an important character dies all they'll do is reverse time again and bring them back. A city gets destroyed same thing. No tension in anything going forward.

@Ren_Davis05317 жыл бұрын
The first act moves too fast. I'm baffled by how quick we get to the car accident. There should have been more time playing up and living with the narcissistic and pompous character in the beginning. I enjoy the film overall as the performances are good and the use of magic is fun (although I wish they went deeper with it), but it tries too hard to be funny at times and Kycelius has an interesting motivation, but not much is done with him. I dug the relationship between Strange, Ancient One, and Mordo. It really shows each character's relationship to magic and their differing ideas of what it means to be a sorceror. Really interested how Mordo is used later on. I hope they don't underutilize him.

1:03:45 its not fantasy ..its Sci fi the explanation the Anciant One gaves about magic is that is science we havent comprehend yet the whole many worlds thing is just quantum mechanics and the reason why it all looks sci fi to eric is that all of this bright magic construction look and move like something from an iron man film or from the thor Films.. which we have already establish.. is not magic so there is nothing magical about Dr Strange
@Ren_Davis05317 жыл бұрын
Philip kelton Your personal feelings about the use of magic aside, The Ancient One does not say that it's science that we don't understand. She says that it's magic, but if it's easier to understand the concepts then think of spells like programs. They're treating the discipline of magic like a scientific discipline akin to medicine where there is study and research devoted to understanding the ins and outs of the discipline.
@PK-MegaLolCaT7 жыл бұрын
she specifically say he is seeing the world through a key hole and that science and magic are part of the same thing .. she takes MRI Scan and chakra body picture and she tell him they are the same thing the program thing cames after... and thanks you, i had forget about the whole program thing ...you just gave me another reason why it all science XD lts like a repeating theme

"so there is nothing magical about Dr Strange." Which is completely contrary to the essence of the whole history of the comic.
