No, the funniest thing is when they got Mastermind 2, Martinique, to show Daredevil visions of his worst memories and you’re like “You do know he’s blind, right?” The Ladies Mastermind are two of the dumbest villains in the X men Roster and I love them for it. The other funny moment is when Beast is confronted by Threnody after Sinister put her on those power stabilisers when he’s surrounded by all of his friends who didn’t know he sold her to Sinister to supposedly continue more ethical research into the legacy virus. Although, right now, it’s casting Demetrius Grosse as the Grim Reaper.

Maddie was Claremont's replacement for Jean since he didn't want to kill her off. The story became very meta when Jean was allowed to come back, and Maddie got discarded as cheap knockoff and retconned as a clone. She's really a victim turned villain and I hope the show captures that.

I actually had the amazing opportunity to talk to Chris Claremont shortly after Marvel brought Jean Grey back from the dead ,and I asked him what he thought about bringing Jean Gray back from the dead? He said that “ Marvel should’ve kept her dead,” and I agreed with him because Marvel had completely gutted the emotional and tragic impact death of Jean Grey/ Phoenix for thousands of X-Men fans by saying hey it wasn’t Jean after and there’s nothing to see here 🙄

It’s not just that Jeans revival made death meaningless in comics going forward. Prior to this when someone died, particularly a big character they stayed dead like Captain Marvel back in 82 who is still dead and has never come back to life permanently. However since Jeans return in 85 characters have died in big spectacles only to return a few years later (Superman, Batman, Barry Allen Flash, Hal Jordan, Spider-Man, Captain America Wolverine etc). So now when a character dies it’s just used to sell a new storyline or character to take their place while having the characters planned return already in the books before that new storyline is released.

While I love Jean and am glad that she got another chance, I can totally see this point. The Phoenix/Dark Phoenix stories had a lot of emotional weight, and to say it was just a clone made all of that feel empty. But since now we know that Jean IS Phoenix, now and forever, there was always a part of Jean there. I guess that's the only saving grace, I guess 🤷

@@Fenris30 kind of making my point there buddy, prior to Jeans resurrection death was a permanent thing. Post resurrection everyone’s seemingly died a least once and returned to life. Charles has 3 “deaths” before the return of Jean however in all 3 of those cases he never actually dies (you can argue his body technically died to the Brood and he is revived via clone and mental transfer but as his mind is very much alive within the Brood he never crossed over to the realm of death so never technically died.)

Rob, Rob, Rob! Stop man. It was not the Fantastic 4 who discovered the cocoon in which Phoenix had placed the real Jean Grey. It was the Avengers who found the pod due to strange energy readings. And there was even an unofficial battle between Hercules and Jean as he tried to get to the pod, but her increased telekenetic power was almost too much for him to overcome. At the end of that Avengers edition, they contacted the Fantastic 4 and then turned the cocoon pod over to them. Then the story then continued on in the next issue of the Fantastic 4 comic. The FF woke up and found that there was not gravity. Jean Grey the FF4, but was only defeated by the Invisible Woman. They then tried to help Jean. Other than that, you've done yet another great video review for us all to enjoy. We do appreciate the hard work.

I didn't need reminding, but you going over this does drive it home for me the 10,000th time that Chris Claremont was a gift to comics and one of the best writers in the history of the medium, if not the best. If anyone is reading this and has not read the original Claremont run of X-Men, do yourself a favor and see just how much Claremont near singlehandedly elevated the writing present in the industry that we still feel the ripples from today. Damn these books were just so good. He had the free reign to do thinks like just bench Cyclops for a couple years for impact. I do hate they wouldn't allow him to keep Jean dead, as that death negatively effected the impact of death in comics going forward. Out of all my favorite writer and artist duos, I believe Claremont + any long term X-Men artist makes up my entire top 5.

I mean, when Jean returns, he not only doesn’t tell her about Maddie and the baby but also encourages beast and Iceman to keep it secret from her. The first X factor books were… messy until Louise Simonson rolled up. Here’s the crazy thing; in the 2010’s Sword comics, the X men investigate Sword because Hepzibah is missing. Scott cared more about when his stepmother was missing than when his wife and child went missing.

I don't know, by pining everything on Scott you give Mr. Sinister who abused Scott for years as a Child at that damned orphanage another win over him. Sinister used Madeline to get to him and Steal his seed, yet people are like Boohoo Scott's a Monster when he was basically a victim of Rape by proxy. Same as with the Emma situation she Basically used her powers to Rape him yet again he gets the blame. Can you even say No to a well trained Psychic of Emma's Powerlevel? I mean really think about that. I point to the "Magic trick" scene in X-Men First Class. Or the Scene where the Guy thinks he's getting with Emma but she's just chillin' on the Couch. Can you say no to a person who can make you say yes without being aware of doing so? Emma basically got the keys to the Kingdom but What did Scott Gain of of the Relationship? Nothing he didn't already have. So who benefited most from the "affair"? EMMA. I've pointed these things out before but constantly got shouted down by the Scott haters.

Now the debate has been going on for years, whether or not sinister actually cloned Jean prior to her becoming the Phoenix. Or he cloned her after she became the Phoenix. Inferno back in 1988, 1989 was a totally kick-ass storyline. Very twisty. It was prominently X-centered, but it affected nearly the entire Marvel Universe of books. The Avengers story was neat too. The Amazing and Spectacular Spider-man books were favorites of mine too. I enjoyed Harry becoming the Green Goblin again just to help Spidey fight the demonized Hobgoblin. Sweet stuff! And in New Mutants when Piotr Rasputin confronted his sister--what a story. To me, Inferno was one of the greatest comic book crossovers of all time. The stakes were high, there were intriguing combinations of characters. Things came full circle in many books. The Avengers were reborn completely out of necessity. Mary Jane Watson-Parker showed how tough she could be when demonized jewelry attacked a photo shoot. And Madelyne went totally berserk. N"Astirh, Sym, the X-terminators... all kinds of good stuff!!!

Great video! Just a couple of details that we missed about the period before Inferno. For perspective, I guess: --Back then, resurrections weren't much of a thing unless you count the many times Magneto came back from the 'dead'. So I can give Scott the benefit of the doubt here by going to see for himself. Of course, if he told Madelyn this, she'd really give him the boot! 😅 --Madelyne was attacked by Marauders the night that Scott left. Even if he called or came back, she'd already be gone. --Jean Grey had no telepathy, so for her the last time she saw Scott was on the shuttle and they were still boyfriend/girlfriend. NONE of her teammates corrected her. --After first meeting Jean, Scott disappears for a week or two, trying to cope with this new reality since he still has feelings for Jean. He then gets roped into being in X-Factor and each mission happens one after the other with him saying that he's leaving after each one but not being able to just leave the other four teammates hanging. He wasn't needed in the X-Men anymore, but this team needed him, and that's a powerful motivator for him as well. --Angel constantly urged Scott to tell Jean the truth and call Maddie. When Scott finally did call, he got no response (see above). He called a few other times (a little half-assed attempt, I know) but figured she was still mad at him. That she moved out and didn't want to speak to him. What he SHOULD have done, at the very least, is call his parents or Alex to check in on her and the baby. --Jean eventually finds out and rips Scott a new one for leaving his wife and child and lying to her. He finally decides to go back to Alaska and finds the house is torn apart, with only Nathan's rattle left behind. He searches for days/weeks with no sign or official record that Maddie ever existed (Sinister's work). Eventually a redhead corpse washes up on a body of water and the officials try to convince Scott that this is her (her body is beyond recognition save for the red hair). So he buries Madelyne, apologizes at her grave and returns to X-Factor full-time. --Madelyne does get rescued in San Francisco by the X-Men and taken to Muir Island. This is either a plot hole or an oversight, but Madelyne has the chance to contact Scott here and yet never does. She knows that it was Angel that called Scott. Angel has a huge building in New York that she can get into contact with. At least to tell him that their baby is still missing, but she doesn't. --Scott then moves on with Jean and, thinking that Maddie is truly dead, they formally resume their relationship. --When he sees the broadcast from Texas, he is shook up. She was still alive but then died with the X-Men immediately after he finds out. So he and Jean take a temporary leave from the team to search for the baby. --They find the baby but Inferno is already underway. Jean pleads with Maddie not to sacrifice the baby, but Maddie is too far gone. When Maddie attempts psychic suicide with Jean, the Phoenix spark that gave life to Maddie intervenes and saves Jean.

The Inferno series were the first comics I bought. I remember being tossed into the events seeing those demon cars and people being crushed in an elevator. Then, Madelyne was having parts of her face removed and put onto another body. I didn't know what I was walking into, but it's brought me to some great stories!

Perhaps someone else already corrected you on this. The first child of Jean Gray and Scott Summers is Rachel Summers, who is massively powerful. Her story is intertwined with Nathan Summers', of course, because she is the one (as Mother Askani) who whisked him away into her own future and then using another of her powers transferred the essences of Jean and Scott into two other rebels of her own time to raise Cable. Yes, I know Nathan Gray is another child of the couple from another timeline. Both Nate and Rachel are Omega-level to Beyond Omega level mutants.

This whole story is what sucked me into X-men in college in the early 90’s. I knew about them a bit from an issue here and there as a kid, and their appearance in the Spiderman cartoon. If I were older and had read all of it as the issues were published, I might have been upset. But reading it all after Jean comes back, I enjoyed it.

I would love it if they covered these sort of deep relationships in the mcu - I would watch- this breakdown is how I think of super heroes in my head - people with powers are still just people - they still have the same want or hierarchy of needs that guides their motivation - power is secondary

kinda missed the whole cyclops storyline between xfactor 1 and the whole infernal story. There were several issues after she reunited with the xmen, and she promptly forgot about scott and nathan. And she and the xmen did not try to contact angel or beast from the mutant masacre when they rescued her to the sacrifice they did at the end of the fall of mutant storyline. After which neither she nor the xmen made any attempt to find nathan. Cyclops attempted to contact maddy several times during the first 5 - 6 xfactors initially, and she never answered. Then he line gets a line disconnected. His grandparents disappeared as well. He did go back to Alaska and found his house abandoned and empty. All records of their existence were erased. He then spent a good portion of the issues between xfactor 12 to 24 searching for her and nathan. Then she has that new broadcast reaching out to find nathan. Cyclops then lead the next 12 issues searching for and eventually finding nathan. Right before events of inferno. You maybe should have explained Sinister's plan for maddy. He inteneded her to get wirh scott, subconsciously drive him away from the xmen have a kid then drive him away to allow sinister to collect the kid. Sinister has a bizzare love idolized thing for cyclops so he did not wish to kill him. So maddy followed his plan to programming however she survived and was not taken by the marauders. Elsewise sinister erased her existence making any attempts to find her or nathan impossible.

I knew a lot of this stuff. But never read this arc. My question: Maddie was a clone of Jean but didn’t manifest tk/tp. I imagine that was designed by Sinister. She gained magical powers from the demon contract. And I feel like as a part of inferno she also had some ‘come to Phoenix moment’ with Jean and it, ending in her “death.” Later she comes back. Is that when she gets the telepathy/ telekinesis? Also. It’s going to be wild, if X-Men ‘97 tells us that Jean has been Maddie since the Phoenix saga. 😂 There was that season 5 episode where the X-Men, Magneto, and Sinister had to team up against the Phalanx. And at the end Prof X says how nice it was working together, and Scott’s all like “where tf is Sinister??” Jean tells him to chill so they can go home. That line would make a lot of sense if it was actually Maddie diverting the attention from Sinister. 😮 We got 2 weeks left to find out.

I was born and raised in Queens NY, and let me tell you this. There are other undiscovered "Jean's and Jim's" laying at the bottom of Jamaica Bay. Many from the 1970's , 1980's and 1990's.

Im very curious on what the plan is for Madelyne Pryor in the Krakoa/fall of X saga because i just looked up how she was one of the very few mutants not invited into Krakoa at the beginning when nearly every mutant was invited amd given a place.

Short answer; Cyclops and Xavier didn’t want her there. For personal reasons. Because she is nowhere near as bad as Apocalypse, Selene, Mastermind or, urgh, Fenris. With the current mini series of Cable, I want her to work with Cable and his teen self. Mostly because I don’t think she’s ever talked to her granddaughter, Hope, or known about the Cuckoos been Teen Cable’s former girlfriends. If you have ever watched HISHE, I would love her to be ecstatic to meet these people and work with her son like Vader is whenever he finds out he has a kid.

Her crimes are too massive and you can’t exactly kill her so, if she’s willing to help everyone out instead of them stopping her, it’s unfortunately the best thing you can do. Plus, she’s fun. Like, Sauron levels of fun. Fenris? I feel like Magneto let them on Krakoa to try and show that he can compromise for the greater good. Also, can we feel sorry for Krakoa and Cypher because they can hear what the twins are getting up to every night? Honestly, whilst X corp wasn’t well received, it’s easily one of the best Selene and Fenris stories.

I'm 54 & I used to read comics alot when I was a kid & thru my teens. The X Men was & still is one of my favorite comic characters. But I've recently looked back into comics a little, to see what kind of stories they're telling these days. One thing I've noticed these days, is a LOT of people Hate CYCLOPS. What did CYCLOPS do that's got so many comic readers Hating his character? Like I said, it's been a couple of decades since I used to read comics. Will someone that knows, explain me why so many readers Hate him?
