I don't think the elder god really counts as Lovecraftian, despite cephalopodic traits that people associate with Cthulhu, and while the Seraphim in BO2 feel kind of "other worldly" after their dimensional imprisonment, there's nothing really cosmic or existential about man/mankind or vampire kind in a way I would call Lovecraftian imo. None of the other creatures really fit the description and the plot, with its focus on ideas of fate, destiny, inevitability feel more like Poe than Lovecraft.

Soul Reaver was my intro to Legacy of Kain, and Raziel is one of my favorite characters of all time.

Absolute masterpiece, the entire LOK series was so ahead of its time it’s even scary. Deep story super convoluted but with a narrative so good it isn’t hard to follow, presented a perfect dichotomy without relying on typical cliches (Kain and Raziel are both sides of a coin, none is neither good nor bad, they had their own purpose and they played their part just perfectly), used the time travel narrative really well imo, and… well I could go on and on and I would never stop praising this saga… I was really looking forward for any type of soft reboot or anything, just give me something more from the saga but it’s nearly impossible it would happen, at this point I would just prefer if it became a different media other than videogames (and please not movies either… give me comic books, tabletop role playing game, novels, heck I would even love to see a manga) and continued the legacy without butchering it.

Legacy of Kain series is truly a legacy to gaming. It is a shame that they never got to release the final game in the series. My one hope is that someday the games are all remade and expanded on with the original voice recordings where needed.

It must've been even more maddening for kain to play those scenarios all over again until the outcome was the edge of the coin. All he could do was to hope that he gave his strongest man - Raziel - the perfect motivation and to lay out all the pieces for him to discover when the time was right. He couldnt just tell him so he did just as a good father would do to a son: he let him do it on his own and only give him some guidance.

If they do rehaul and redo the game for the modern age they should start with Remastering Blood omen and soulreaver 1 and 2 first, the dialogue is an absolute masterpiece and shouldn't be altered, still remember playing these when they first came out and it was life changingly awesome, I've still got the OG version of soul reaver with its lenticular cover, it's my pride n joy that I'll never part with, The whole story arc of the series puts modern day story telling to complete shame, such a phenomenal series that will forevermore stick with me, thankyou for this vid/doco! Oh cool if you're wondering what character to deep dive into next you should do dig into Duriel he was omitted in the original Soul Reaver but if I remember right he was in the Sega dream cast version which made me hell jealous back into the day or maybe Kain's lieutenants before and after there transformative 'Gifts' or Ariel she has an interesting history being the guardian/keeper of the pillars or maybe the Elder god voiced by the late and great Tony Jay, Ah! There's too much to think on, maybe The Elder God he's definitely shrouded with a deep and hidden history who withholds a dangerous amount of information from Kain and Raziel, thankyou immensely for this vid, have yourself a spectacular day, im a colossal Legacy of Kain Fan, there's even a Muriel I remember in Defiance where a supposed pre destined fight between Kain and a Hylden lord, but there's alot more to it than just that, oh the memories are flowing back, by the elder gods I miss this series, it gives me great joy to hear everyone talk about the series that means so much to me, Now this is story telling of its highest tier quality no modern story can compete with

Raziel's character arc: * As a human Sarafan warrior priest, he was a pompous pri-ck. * As a vampire lieutenant in Kain's army, he was an even bigger pompous pri-ck * As a wraith, he finally learns humility, and as a his final act he did indeed choose integrity by entering the Soul Reaver and thus purifying Kain and giving Kain a chance to restore Nosgoth.

onethnig worth noting about Raziel is his relation to the Reaver and why he was raised as a wraith. Time is shown ot be cyclical in Nosgoth, its the reason why you have entities capable of seeing into the future/past, these events already happened and are by nature VERY difficult to change in any significant manner, its the entire premise of the series : free will is an illusion. why does this matter for raziel you may ask? its because Raziel IS the spirit of the Soul Reaver, this notion alone should already hint on why he was raised as a wraith after his execution. theevents we know take place demand that at some point raziel has to be consumed by the reaver inorder to become the spirirt inside it and its because of this event the Wraith blade exists, but because we know the wraith blade is meant ot eventually be bound ot Wraith Raziel this means that raziel has to be consumed by the reaver and somehow be able ot bind himself to it.This is possible in the setting because of the cyclical nature of time and thisevent will never change because we always see raziel wiedling the wraith blade(in fact the end of SR2 shows that kain's attempt at changing the events didnt scueed, he only postponed them, otherwise when razile slipped into the spectral realm he wouldnt be in possesion of the wriath blade anymore.) Ultimately there is a slew of events that must take place in the timeline : 1: Human Raziel and his btsrafan btohers must fall during Vorador's assault of the fortress(this ensures there are bodies ot raise for Kain and its also why we are not allowed to consume these souls, Causality is protecting their existence as vampires) 2:Kain must be raised by using Janos's Heart, this ensures Kain's fate is tied to him and enables Kain to havethe opportunity to refuse the sacrifice and Raise Raziel as a vampire. 3:"Raziel" is not allowed ot perish before he can become the spirit of the Soul reaver.History will violate causality if it has to to ensure this and this is what ultimately allows Raziel t osurvive his execution: Causality prevents it. number 3 is absolutely critical while number 1 and 2 are required so that this can even take place. if any of these events were ot somehow not happen it would lead towards a Fatal paradox where the only solutions would be either, Kain not being raized as a vampire, or the reaver never being forged. instead history decided to expel Raziel from the whell of fate, making him the only creature in Nosgoth with true free will.
