The Thing is my default answer when someone brings up the question of which is better, practical or CGI. You'll be hard pressed to find a better example and demonstration of practical effects than The Thing. Rob Bottin went to the hospital for those effects, and that passion shows.
@cyril-rr2jk3 жыл бұрын
Both practical and CG have their place. The problem is when they rely too much on one or the other. While the technical limitations of the time date it a bit, I think the first Hellboy is a good example of a balanced approach.

Thanks for the well-thought-through analysis of these films. I confess my own thoughts about them have been on the superficial similarities: an isolated group of people who are forced to combat an enemy that is neither human nor indeed comprehensible to the human mind, but which presents a terminal threat to humanity as a whole, the conflict not ending on clear note or victory for humanity but with the unspoken implication that their efforts were in vain. One can equally argue that in each instance humanity succeeded: MacReady and Childes letting themselves die in the Antarctic winter ensures the alien - if its either of them - will be left there; Marsh's 'dream' is, like all the others seen throughout the film, a warning from the future and thus can still be acted upon and prevented (plus why is there the automatic assumption that Danforth is possessed by the anti-god, when its spawn is in the other dimension with it?); and if Trent is indeed nothing but the creation of the author Cane, why should we conclude what he's seeing and experiencing are "real" and not simply the written conclusion of Cane's own writing? FYI: British author Alan Moore wrote a 12-issue limited series in 2018 title "Providence" that postulated that while HP Lovecraft was writing nothing but fiction, the concepts and monstrous entities he used were in fact real (in a pan-dimensional sense) and the nearly century's worth of reprints, criticism, adaptations, and spin-offs of it have given said monstrous entities purchase on humanity's collective unconscious. This in turn increasingly gives them an avenue into our reality, which naturally results in an apocalypse for humanity in general. Wonder if Moore was cribbing off the Apolcalypse Trilogy's general theme there, eh?

Prince of Darkness deserves a remake. It was intensely atmospheric and just had a nightmare vibe to it that would be difficult tp equal. I'll be the first to admit that aside from Donald Pleasence none of the actors were memorable. There was NO character developement and sadly because they were so one-dimensional you didn't really care what happened to them. And the cheesy moustaches didn't help. But the premise was so damn unsettling. A reliquiery hundreds-if not a thousand- years old, containing an indestructible plasmic medium unknown to science that is the portal to hell? Or an unknown dimension even worse?? This incredibly perverse and terrifying premise needs an updated look but a faithful ressurection.

I remember some sci-fi groups made discussions about how and when Blair got infected by The Thing but I've often wonder why Clark never was since its basically proven that one cell from The Thing will cause assimilation. Granted a slow one compared to some of the others but it would still be assimilation. Clark petted the Dog-Thing with his bare hands when it first showed up and the blood test tells that every individual piece of the Thing can and will be it's own entity so the odds of Clark getting dog hair on him from the Dog-Thing and later being infected are too good to honestly ignore.

He got bored with Directing and traded in for Composing Music. He released his third studio album This year and is currently putting the finishing touches on Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends Scores. So i wouldn't say he's sitting back living off Royalties. He also works on a line of Graphic Novels called Tales for a Halloween Night.

In Prince of Darkness the message was beamed back into the past from the future. The images they got of the "Jesus" figure was the girl who ended up being the savior of mankind. They literally say they were sending the message back in time.

In the ending of "The Thing" the narrator said that MacReady & Childs each took a shot of their whisky, which isn't correct. It was MacReady that handled the bottle of whisky to childs, and it's commonly believed that the bottle didn't contained whisky but gasoline hence the smile in the end on MacReady's face. Meaning Childs is now the thing.

There's no proof gas was in it. Even then, Childs should be concerned about cross-contamination, so I think he failed a test.

@@dubuyajay9964 That's why I said "commonly believed". We'll never know the real truth. It's an open ending, open for your own interpretation.

The original theatrical release doesn’t have narration. That was added when it started showing on cable TV, apparently because the movie was too “confusing.” 🤷♂️

@@gregbors8364 I meant the "narrator" of this video (Marvelous Videos) 😉

@@LABOUMDECADANCE Oh, OK. Well, that’s a rumor, but neither John Carpenter nor anyone else involved in the production has ever confirmed it

I loved all of these movies!!! I think "In the Mouth of Madness" is one of the best horror movies ever made, with "The Thing" being the 2nd!!!! Thank-you so much for posting this, I thoroughly enjoyed it! John Carpenter is the best!! He also wrote a lot, if not most, of the music for his movies!

Saw “Prince…” as a kid and wasn’t scared. Rewatched it after I read all of Lovecraft…terrified! 😱😅
