Marvin Gaye ~ Let's Get It On 1973 Soul Purrfection Version

Producer/writer/perfomer Ed Townsend had his own hits, "For Your Love" from 1958 is one as well as creating R&B classics for Theola Kilgore and Dee Dee Warwick. In 1972, he was visiting Los Angeles and heard the rumor that Marvin Gaye was asking about him. Going straight to Gaye, he brought a few songs to the table and Gaye agreed to record them if Townsend produced them. With Gaye's blessing, Ed secured a 50% publishing stake of the songs and the project was a go. The musicians who played on the track inlcuded the Crusaders Joe Sample on keyboards, guitarists David T Walker and "Wah Wah" Watson, Wilton Felder on bass, and Gaye on piano. Marvin was very into layering his vocals and other studio tricks which Townsend ended up challenging. Townsend stopped the recording and admonished Marvin by saying "I understand why you don't go on tour because you can't take the studio with you and stop and overdub at Madison Square Garden. You have to start at the beginning and go to the end." Ed was not used to a lot of overdubbing as the going production style was to record the music to two tracks, then four tracks with the vocal being recorded once over that. Marvin got ticked off, took off his shirt in the studio and nailed the vocal in one amazing ten minute take. When he was done, he put his shirt back on and asked "Now what do you think?". Townsend was ecstatic with the results and feels that Marvin was the most cooperative artist he ever worked with. When this one first came out, it was surprising to hear such explicitly carnal lyrics, but that is just what drove the success. The song was #1 for six weeks R&B and spent two weeks at the pinnacle of the Hot 100.

Sorry, but I guess I'm old school and I grew up when this song was #1. It's the song that made Marvin Gaye one of my favorite singers along with Stevie Wonder and Al Green. Anyway, I know people can do this or that with songs now a days (remix), but, in my opinion, you don't mess around with perfection. One of the best songs of all time. RIP Marvin Gaye

In my opinion, this is your best achievement and your best work. I've been listening to your remixes for a few years now and enjoy many of them thoroughly. Unlike the typical remix, what I love about your work is that you aren't desperate to leave your fingerprint on the remix. You leave your ego out of it. So your songs *sound* like the original artist. As a result, a lot of your work becomes the answer to the question of, "What would an extended version of '____ ______ __ ____' have sounded like if the original artist had done one?" Imagine being given the gift of an extended version of "Stayin' Alive", "Night Fever", the Donna Summer songs, the Marvin Gaye songs, or any other track that happens to be someone's favourite... and that's what you've done. It's truly wonderful and I thank you. In the case of "Let's Get It On", I honestly never cared much for the original song. I think it is probably because I am fairly young, and this song is overplayed and a bit exhausted. Your remix made me truly appreciate the song because you stretch it out, and let the high points hit with the proper build up and release. Marvin's version has all of those high points, of course, but it is so tight knit that somehow, despite many listens, I never truly appreciated it. His "threatenin' you" line really hits, for example, and it is my favourite moment in your version.

Generation X are too young for songs like this, they missed the pinnacle of soul music from 1964-1973, relying on their older family members will never replicate being a teen/20s then and claiming they were cozigant during this era when they could barely read or write will never compensate what they missed.
