'Father, father we don't need to escalate'.... And Marvin was shot to death by his father (who was a minister) for getting involved in an argument between his parents. Ultimate irony. BTW, Vin, just because turning the other cheek doesn't fit your personality, doesn't make Malcolm X a better man than Martin Luther King. And it doesn't mean that Marvin was wrong about the fact that, ultimately, only love can conquer hate. That's what's going on, LOL

The lyrics expressed the truth of the time. The reality hasn't changed for many people over the years. The former president made many people very comfortable with speaking hate to others, it is shameful.

I was lucky enough to hear the digital multitrack of this- when analogue tapes were transferred to digital, there was a lot of bootlegging going on. I heard the multitrack (16 or 24, I don’t remember) What amazed me musically is that the melody used on the verses was just one of about 4 passes, each with a different melody! Probably all of them improvised. Amazing.

The tragic & violent death of Marvin Gaye was somewhat similar to John Lennon's. All people could do was shake their heads at the loss of a good man and the instability that leads to these sad deaths. I don't love "ranking" songs or bands, but I won't debate anyone who ranks this as one of the "best".

I hear stereotypes here that I don’t know if I agree with. I also think you’re misreading King AND Malcolm what they were about and where they put themselves. The point of the song is that we need to come from a place of love, not hatred. This was coming out of the 60s, with a lot of violence that it’s harder for young people to understand. The war… the riots… the murder of war protesters… riots in the prison system… social and economic decay.
