The lyrics are so meaningful, it's a plea for love and peace. An anti-war message written in 1970 during the Vietnam war when many young American men, over 50,00, died and young people were protesting and picketing against the war. It's considered one of the best songs every written/performed. His cry "What's going on" is still relevant today! Mother, mother There's too many of you crying Brother, brother, brother There's far too many of you dying You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today, yeah Father, father We don't need to escalate You see, war is not the answer For only love can conquer hate You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today Picket lines and picket signs Don't punish me with brutality Talk to me So you can see Oh, what's going on (What's going on) What's going on (What's going on) What's going on (What's going on) What's going on (What's going on) Right on, baby Right on, baby Right on Mother, mother Everybody thinks we're wrong Oh, but who are they to judge us Simply 'cause our hair is long Oh, you know we've got to find a way To bring some understanding here today Picket lines and picket signs Don't punish me with brutality Come on talk to me So you can see What's going on (What's going on) Yeah, what's going on (What's going on) Tell me what's going on (What's going on) I'll tell you, what's going on (What's going on) Right on, baby, right on Right on, baby Right on, baby, right on

The whole What’s Going On album is fire! I’ve been a Motown groupie since it was established in the 60’s!! So glad you are enjoying your discovery of Motown, it is wonderful to watch !! you can’t stop at only one song 🤩 Marvin arranged the music & lyrics into an icon of an album. ** watch Marvin’s LIVE 1972 performance of What’s Going On, a production that is out of this world ! This album changed the music world ! I’m sure 2Pac loved Marvin’s music ! I have never recovered from Marvin’s death, killed by his father after they were arguing, what an absolute loss to the music world 💔😢 RIP Marvin Gaye. amazing Marvin song Mercy, Mercy, Me … for your playlist of Soul music !! One of the most amazing things about this song is the bass line, by the legendary James Jamerson. According to other musicians on the session, they originally had another bass player on the session, but it just wasn't working. So, they sent someone to find Jamerson. He'd been drinking, since it was his night off, and when they eventually got him to the studio, he was so drunk he couldn't sit on his stool. So, he layed flat on his back, on the studio floor. Someone held up a sheet with chords written out, and he improvised this gorgeous, lyrical, rhythmically rich and dynamic masterpiece of a bass line. All while so drunk he couldn't sit on a stool without falling off. Genius.

Marvin (like Stevie) oozes soul.....you can't teach that, you have to have talent and then you have FEEL it. Eminem, Stevie, Marvin....all from Detroit and that is my home town. This is mainly about the Vietnam war, but it also may refer to the 1967 riots in Detroit. I saw the results of that in the 60's (yes, that old) and this song brings back bittersweet memories.

Great! Please check out the companion song by Marvin Gaye, “Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)” from the same album and also a big 1971 hit. These two songs are beautiful and life changing. The other great soul artist of that time was Al Green. His biggie is “Let’s Stay Together,” which will make you not only want to make love to somebody, but propose to them. Even if you already married to them? Why only get married once to your true love? Listen to Al & it’s worth doing it over and over. I’m not kidding.

Love your reactions, very entertaining to say the least. Marvin has definitly got soul and can melt yours as well. Early 70s when our world was in chaos. I loved growing up on this shit. I'd like to see you do some Alice In Chains. They are from the Seattle grunge era along with Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden. The lead vocalist Layne Staley was a beast. RIP Layne. His vocal ability was such that you didn't just hear him you felt him in your soul and if you didn't you must not have one. Such a powerful, well controlled and unique voice. the best live is from Live At The Moore, Man In A Box, Bleed The Freak and my fav Love Hate Love. Jerry's masterful riffs, Sean killing it on drums and Mike on his badass bass, this band clearly underrated. They also did an MTV UNPLUGGED session that is the best ever. stay you

We listened continuously on a small tape player. 60+ years later every time I hear this album I cry. Not for the friends I lost but because I survived. I so appreciate your innocent and honest perspective. I only wanted to give some context to the album and expose who his audience was. one of the most important songs of the 20th century. This broke “Black radio” just like Dylan broke “white radio” with conscious lyrics and longer song times. As with most other things in the states Black artists weren’t afforded the opportunity to speak their minds like white artists for almost a decade after white artists got that freedom. James Brown deserves plenty of credit and so does Aretha, but this is the breakthrough. This pretty much killed the 3 minute love song at Motown forever.
