I was a hmmwv mechanic for 12 years in the army. That thing looks in pretty good shape. If you always disconnect the main ground first and leave it last to hook back up you shouldn’t get shocked again. The only cause if a power drain on that thing would be forgetting to turn the master light switch completely off. The death wobble your getting at about 60-65 is the huge bead locks they run on them. They are hard to balance, but doable. A good balance and alignment should fix it.

Hey Mav, worked on a number of the M1123s and a few with the shelters in the motor pool. The fact that you were able to force the truck to 65mph is a miracle it didnt explode or make an astronaut out of a piston. It shakes likely because its shaped like a brick with massive airflow underneath. The alignment I'm certain could be improved and a better steering gear would help, pretty sure there have to be aftermarket steering boxes for these by now. That space above the cab usually hosts an A/C unit for the shelter, although the military usage requires on site electrical support to run said Shelter's Electronics and A/C unit. If you want to power an A/C window unit via solar or put in a wide window and use it for storage. I know the hood says "NO STEP" but its pretty stable to stand on if need be also. That blockage you found in your filler neck is/was apart of the galvanized chain {like a tag on the chain, still don't know what it's for but see them still on the trucks regularly} that would chain your filler neck screen (mesh bucket bit) to your filler neck and another chain going from the filler neck to the lid to the filler neck. As mentioned below, the idea is you screw the handle of your fuel cap and the rubber gasket gets squishes causing it to seal the tank from water seepage during water fording. It would be worth mentioning the cabs usually have pretty trash sound barrier, the 6.5 in those is the same as the 6.5 in 90s Chevy 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. get some insulation in the doghouse cover, the firewalls/footwells, plastic splashguards in the engine bay and under the fiberglass hood.

Hey Mav, I noticed in one of the shots that you had the panel light switch left on. That will drain the battery pretty quickly if left that way. I’ve used vehicles like this for almost 18 years now. I highly recommend checking that light switch to make sure you didn’t accidentally turn it on before you get out. It’ll save you a lot of money in batteries.

You need: - Battery Tenders = one 12 vdc for each battery or a 24 vdc for the 2 batteries. - A battery feed Shut Off switch like buses and construction machines have. - A battery charger that can charge 0 volts dead batteries. Many new battery chargers do not work on voltage less than 3 vdc. I laugh when I saw those electrican gloves. The only time I used them is when I worked on over 500 volts.

I spent allot of time working, driving and living in one of those machines. You defiantly have a USMC model due to the exhaust and air intake snorkels. The fuel cap is made that way so you can really tighten it down so no water gets in the fuel tank when submerging the Humvee. It would be a good idea to put a brush guard/winch on it and then drive where you want. Enjoy the vehicle and thanks for sharing the video.

Until youre able to figure out the draw on the batteries, the easiest thing to do is disconnect the negative cable when the truck is going to sit for a while. Mav, I would make it a minimalist build, but give it a solar kit, and propane kit so you can run either/or for cooking. I would also think about trailering the Humvee after building it out and using it as a excursion vehicle that can be driven from a base camp, that has the trailer and a few more amenities like water tanks and maybe more cold storage for perishable food. Lot of us are the same as you, we get cabin fever from the Midwest winters and that humvee could be packed up with supplies and you could live out of it for a month in the SW in the winter months.

I drove a Humvee for a few years when I was in the Army. Anytime we had to drive them on the roads I kinda hated it, but whenever we were in the field I loved them. The capabilities they have are amazing, but are prone to having problems all the time. Truly a love-hate relationship lol

Mac, you own a quality USA military vehicle! Don’t be apprehensive about trees in your path! If you don’t try to float it, the Hummve will go through practically everything. Invest in very rugged off road tires. I love my BF Goodrich KO2’s. 8 or 10 ply are best if you really want to go serious off road. Make sure you have winches in both front and back. Enjoy your new toy!

I would love to see a build. I would think that some sound deadening on the floor, firewall, walls, doors, etc. would make a much quieter drive. You might also see about the alignment to see if you can clean up some of that "death wobble" at high speeds, but I don't think they're made to do 70mph. Really excited to see what you do with this thing.

I was taught to remove the negative battery cable first thing so the vehicle no longer has a grounded chassis. It won't spark off the wrench during negative removal, nor after, not unless you join the contacts right on the battery.

Ye that’s best but also if you aimlessly throw the terminal around and it’s hits metal or other grounds it will make sparks regardless therefore just hold it with one hand until you’re done

You should build a couch that you could use to sit on while you're cooking/hanging out inside the humvee that could be converted into a full size bed. Like to convert from couch mode to bed mode, you slide out the base and move down the back cushion to fill in the space between the base cushion and the wall, put some covers on it, and boom, bed mode. As for ventilation, get 1 (or 2 for cross-ventilation) maxxair fans and mount it on the roof. You can use them to suck the air out when you're cooking and also blow air in to keep you cooler. Plus, they come with a cover so rain can't come in the vehicle.

As uncomfortable as the truck looks to live in there is something tremendously comfortable about the beat up military surplus vibe. As any service member will tell you, you find places to “build your nest” where ever available when ever available. That nostalgia is what makes this so cool and comfortable. Being so exhausted you will literally sleep any where but you make the space yours out of your gear. Pelican cases for tables, power supplies for your laptop or tablet, stash of snack near by and if your lucky a woobie hung up with 550 cord to give you a little privacy. I dig the mill surp, vibe smattered with camp gear and would double down on that. But honestly who cares what any one thinks, make it yours like you do bro and it will be awesome.

When my kids were little my deceased husband had a 47 willys Jeep that he totally rebuilt from top to bottom and it ran like a champ and he taught the kids how to sort of drive while sitting on his lap. They took it back in the wilderness, through the cold dumps, you name it that thing was a bear. It was a real military willys Jeep from world war II. So I can understand how you could really love this thing it's a beast too. Sadly that Willy's Jeep ended up in a very severe car accident and he got rid of it. I'm going to try that gumbo. Looks great 😀👍

I think for when you’re camping in your vehicles, or to even have when you’re driving that thing I’m sure it gets roasting in there with no AC you should look into a portable camping AC like EcoFlow or ZeroBreeze they have portable ACs and even extra battery packs you can keep charged and options for solar charging as well which I think is pretty cool. Might be worth checking into? I think with the space you have in the back of that you could probably do a really nice setup with it.
