My Jamaican-born Mom immigrated to the US in the '50s, and I was born and raised in NY. I must say that Mary in the kitchen makes me nostalgic for the kind of baking my mom did throughout my childhood! I love her, then and right now. I think she's even more fun to watch now that she's in her golden years!

I find British/European baking so much less sugary than American pastries. My parents, who don't really care for sugary desserts, love when I make British desserts.
@josiek75893 жыл бұрын
British and American deserts are virtually identical unless you’re baking from a box. The recipes don’t have a huge separation.

I remember cycling home from 6th form, through the slush of a cold, wet 1977 winter on my precious Xmas gift - a snazzy American-style Raleigh bicycle. I'd always make sure to pass Mrs Hardigan's bungalow on the way home. There, she would often wave me inside the cosy porch, where she would delicately wipe down my Chopper, leaving it shiny, warm and ready to ride. And there'd always be a portion of something hot and contemporary to keep this young lad from the chills; whether it was Toad in the Hole, Cottage Pie with Cheesy Mash or Mary Berry's Easy Fish Casserole. On a good day I'd also receive a dessert of Upside-Down Tart, a moist slice of Delia Smith's Black Forest Gateau, or Chocolate Brownies depending on the day of the month. I never did get Spotted Dick but she always had me gagging for an Arctic Roll on New Year's Day. Happy days, though it all came to a halt in 1979 when Mum got suspicious after finding what looked like Cheese Fondue all over my bike saddle 😞. I miss you so much Mrs Hardigan 💔

That huge necklace of Judiths!With a J on it lol , but those chelsea buns looked good and I would have put icing on them to make them cinnamon swirls!

Lol, I love her necklace. I think it could easily be worn today and be totally in style. But I don't think initial jewelry ever goes out of style. Even Anne Boleyn wore such a necklace... for a while anyway lol

Love the part where she coughs, puts her hand over her mouth & hand straight back to the dough! I'm sure nobody died, but that would be edited straight out these days!

Love Mary Berry and love Chelsea Buns so much more than Cinnamon Buns they don't have the over powering cinnamon flavour or the sickly icing, always wondered why the recipe is not in Mary Berry's Baking Bible when it's such a classic I use the recipe from my school cookery classes 40 year ago !!

I have never baked anything, but a few years ago, reading a novel, I wished I was able to bake American “biscuits” - but I am British and the efforts to make them were disastrous. To me a “biscuit” is a ginger nut or digestive, to Americans, it is a type of doughy bread/scone, which is alien to me - but in the novel, the girl was making “biscuits” with ham and scrambled eggs and my mouth was watering, I wish I could make them. I can cook, pretty well, actually, but I can’t bake.

British food is so unappealing and bland in my opinion, but it looks so comforting. Like something your 80 year old grandma would cook-very little seasoning apart from salt and pepper, boiled meats, starchy vegetables with loads of butter, odd candied fruits added to old fashioned holiday cakes... Makes me really miss my great grandma’s cooking!!
