Mary Ellen Pleasant was a former slave who posed as a white woman in San Francisco, amassed a fortune and fought for the rights of black people.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

Mary Ellen Pleasant had light-skin privilege, realized this, and instead of hiding it & only using it to her personal advantage, used it to the advantage of Black people. A Queen.

Unfortunately the house and garden are not included in the "park" which consists of some eucalyptus trees, half a block of cement, and the memorial plaque. Her mansion was demoed in the 1920s and the new house on the property is, I assume, a privately owned home.

Damn, this was fascinating. I knew some of Mary Pleasant's story, but not a lot of detail. She would be cited as a historical figure for Black History Month, but these references omitted that she had passed for white. She did not list herself as black until after the Civil War; it would not have been safe to do so before this. And obviously and sadly, she was labeled as "Mammy" by racists whites to make sure that she would be shunned by the white society that she previously moved in more freely. One estimate of her wealth put $30 million as equivalent to $647 million in 2017.

@ocalexander3360 5 жыл бұрын
@@daniellejackson5439 A great deal of her wealth was consumed in various court battles. She sued San Francisco for having segregated street cars. She won, but the case took a couple of years to resolve. She tried to help a socialite in a marriage case against a powerful former senator. She was involved in a case against the family of her former business associate, Thomas Bell. It was all kind of sad, and the San Francisco high society types who loved her when they thought she was white largely turned against her.

@DroidXPhone A highly interesting man. Whenever I think of the question "Dead or alive; who would you like to have dinner with?" I think of him. Because I'd love to pick his brain and figure out everything that motivated him to not be content with his privileges as a white man, and go to battle for such a cause. I heard it be alluded that he felt God had chosen and guided him to do what he did. But I'd like to hear his own words.

Award: Best obviously drunk Narrator. "That wasn't me farting, it was the chair." I feel her hangover. Best subject I never heard of and am grateful that's changed. Best use of the LOVELY Lisa "Moon" Bonet Momoa in a while. (Lip-syncing the fart remark with the precise amount of delicate Victorian dismay, not to mention the cursing.) Best use of supporting cast. And lastly, most number of my laughs ever in a Drunk History episode. Good job!

Thx 4 highlighting one of my sheroes, Mary Ellen Pleasant. I teach (Entrepreneurship/Financial Literacy) and mention her (radio). I first read of her in a book about Blacks who settled the West. When California was and did become a state the racism negatively affected her, other Blacks and Mexicans. Their businesses and finances suffered.

Thank you Comedy Central. Your Drunk History is so much more informative and entertaining (sometimes rude 😜) than anything I experienced in school. Having viewed this, I just ordered MEP's biography. I have more time to read in isolation; probably the only good aspect of it... besides getting drunk and watching Drunk History.
