Great to see these William T. Williams paintings. I haven’t seen his work since I was an art student at Syracuse University and he had a show at the Lowe Art Centre there around 1968-70. A few of the graduate students then were working along the same lines but his dynamic space was unique. Also his use of silver paint which I usually don’t like. Thank you Kate.

Here is my take. Some of the Mary Heilmann surfaces and arrangements of multiple canvases are interesting. Occasionally she will discover an unusual and striking color, more often in the ceramic work. The best work is when she finds a combination of materials and surfaces that relate. The kindergarten toy color palettes and wonky geometry paintings and furniture are less interesting. There seems to be a lack of thinking in the work and more just playful reactions. Not necessarily a bad thing. All the work is lighthearted, nothing heavy in mood. I get the feeling she may be following Ellsworth Kelly in a way by seeing things in the world and being inspired to recreate some aspect of them, especially with the furniture. I definitely see the influence of her work on younger artists especially in the New York galleries and in graduate shows. Some of William T. Williams work shares with Heilman a similar palette of mostly primary and secondary colors although his work seems more thought out and preplanned. He makes it look easy but what he is doing is very complex. Once again, simple elements of line ,color and surface combined in the right hands of someone with a real feel for these things show what can be done. The sophistication of his color really comes out in the ones toward end of video. The best ones are on canvas and employ a combination of mostly flat unmodulated color surrounded by raw canvas ribbonlike lines. His work at times definitely rivals the best of Frank Stella. After listening to your audio I wonder if Heilmann has any work in a major museum collection as Williams does? Being a darling of commercial galleries and inspiration to younger artists may or may not convince the museum people of long term value.

I love MH's sense of humour. It's funny how in many of the works, the paint actually functions in a representational way, in the sense that it seems to represent (or maybe 'mimic' is a better word) various fluids that have different qualities (viscosity, opacity/transparency, etc) from paint. The yellow piece looks like melted butter. The hunter green painting looks like bathroom tile cleaner...

Mary is the perfect example of selfreflection without any message. It resonates more to the artist as to the public. That's a real good example of what's wrong w the world today imo. No personal offense to her as i firmly believe in the free expression formula of the artworld and thus society since it's a reflection. But we can not ignor it being corrupted as is the free market . Perhaps she reflects that or she became just another product of the institute.. not sure and since it's not clear I'd lean toward the lather..

@@sublimeister9630 Thinking abt this off and on over the last couple of days! For me it's getting more and more clear that the artworld didnt provide any valid alternative, besides a couple of interesting movements especially not the last couple of years. Not even in times of political unrest, civil distress and corporate supremacy it seems the artworld contributes to a status quo culture due to its persistence in accepting everything that is provided on a gallery wall. Which imo is not any different than the social media wall. For this reason I have to conclude that art has become a victim of times most inherent characteristic being corruption. It's the same hollow promotion of a brand of lets say any redundant brand out there that is incapable of progressing just bc the system supports the state that it's in. The 20th century is over, it failed allarmingly and now, eventho the public is waiting for it by trusting 'officials' it still is impossible to think outside that strategically spooned regurgitated propaganda we call the 20th century!
