I’ remember hearing her for the very first time in the fall of 1991 singing “You Remind Me” on the radio. I’ve been a fan ever since. That woman has really gone through a lot. Me and Mary are around the same age, and I'll always remember back in the 90s when she first came out saying to myself, "DAMN, SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!!!" I wanted so badly to be as beautiful as she is, and so did most of the black girls growing up during that era. It's sad to know that she didn't feel she was this beautiful woman (AND STILL IS) back then, but I understand. No matter how family, friends, and the outside world sees you, if you don't feel that within yourself then it's just that - you don't feel beautiful. It stems from personal trauma, relationships, etc., and how you're treated growing up and the people around you who can do damage to your self-esteem. Hell, even Halle Berry (who is considered one of the most beautiful women in the world) said that her self esteem was in the crapper coming up regardless of how many times she was told how beautiful she was.
