Big hitters like Pierce, Seles, and Davenport where like kryptonite against Coetzner. She was able to beat Graf a number of times because she could recover in a point by keeping it to Steffi's weaker backhand. But against the big hitters on both sides, she had little to no chance. She had a remarkable career for someone as physically small as she is, great fighter.

Isn't Graf like 14-2 against Coetzer?
@mfimh09013 жыл бұрын
I just checked, Graf is 11-4, Pierce is 8-3 and Davenport is 14-3. You lot just make stuff up as you go along.

@@mfimh0901 I think the point being made is not about trashing Graf. Conchita Martinez beat Graf only one time, Mary Joe Fernandez never beat Graf and I’m sure there are other examples vs Graf like that. Coetzer was 5’2” which is very short for a pro tennis player so given her size and game, Coetzer was an over achiever. She maxed out at No 3 at one point but was a consistent top 20 player.

Amanda had to be that much better to achieve what she did.

Mary is a phenomenal ball striker.

The rebound ace surface suited Mary well. Relatively slow with a bounce that sat up. Bolletieri style aggressive baseliners like Pierce, Seles, Agassi and Courier all had some of their best results on rebound ace.

interestingly, those four also did well at the French Open, despite them hitting mostly flat shots, rather than topspin. I guess the Bolletieri honed baseline ability worked on clay as well.

Coetzer is called the little assasin. She is quite a stealth at the court. Love seeing her play.

👏👏👏👏 One of the hardest hitting four hands on the women's game that's ever existed. I would hold it up to Steffi Graf it wasn't as consistent but it was hit hard. Probably Lindsay Davenport would be my other tie for first. Both women hit the ball extremely flat with no top spin. 😊

Her forehand was on that day,and when it is,she is unstoppable

yet in the final against Hingis Pierce was out of sorts. Hingis at that point could place the ball sharply enough to make it awkward for Pierce, who didn't have the footspeed that day to adjust

True. The serve and forehand were particularly nice to watch.

@@FlabbyTitmuss her serve doesn't get the credit it deserves. Such a simple action with such little that could go wrong with it. A model for anyone learning the game.

Mary was so feminine and beautiful. She is also good striker. She hits the ball very hard. She didn't want to be trapped like Graf. She push Amanda far from baseline and then strike the ball to get point winner.
Amanda was a good counter puncher but she always just put the ball back in play and down the middle of the court. She never went for the lines or outright winners. She played it to safe.

Coetzer was an odd duck. Pleasant enough in interviews and apparently well liked on tour, she was so sour and dead eyed on court. But hey she was blonde, tanned and not bad looking so she seemed to get a pass.

I'm surprised the first set was 7 -5, the way the highlights looked it looked like Pierce was creaming her lol.
