A Queen without a country, Mary Stuart remains one of the most memorable monarchs of Scotland. She stood her ground against her cousin, Elizabeth I, and wasn’t afraid to rule from her heart.
Mary, Queen of Scots was an admirable woman of much influence in an era dominated by drama, turbulence, and disaster. But what led to her execution? And why did she pose such a threat to Queen Elizabeth I’s rule?

@@bbybella9937 Elizabeth kept Mary imprisoned for all those years because in the minds of many Mary had a better claim to the throne of England than did Elizabeth. Mary was a legitimate descendent of King Henry VII, founder of the House of Tudor. Elizabeth's legitimacy was in question. At the time Elizabeth was born to Anne Boelyn, Henry VIII's first wife, Katherine of Aragon, was still alive. Many believed that Henry's divorce from Katherine and subsequent marriage to Anne was unlawful and it was not recognized by the Catholic Church. Elizabeth was considered to be a bastard and thus ineligible to inherit the English throne. Mary of Scotland would pose a serious threat to Elizabeth's throne if Mary were allowed to go to France and potentially raise an army. Elizabeth wasn't about to let that happen now that she had Mary in her hands, yet she feared to kill Mary, a crowned and anointed Queen chosen by God to rule.

@@warp9p659 Mary absolutely did not have a better claim to the throne than Elizabeth. Illegitimate or not, Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry the 8th, not a random great niece like Mary was. Elizabeth was also put in his line of succession while Mary was taken out. Mary had a claim yes but to say she had a better claim is ridiculous. Of course to Catholics she did but England was mainly a Protestant country that recognized Elizabeth.

Mary Queen of Scots was already married to Francis, dauphin of France by that time….(m April 1558-1560) ironically 7 months after they were married Bloody Mary died (d. November 1558). if Bloody Mary named Mary QoS as her successor that essentially would have been directly putting a French king on the throne through Francis, Mary QoS’ husband. Through France and England under Mary were both Catholic, there was too much overall bad blood between the two countries to ever risk France ruling England. However, if Bloody Mary had survived long enough and was still queen after MQoS became a widow with no heir after only being married about 2 years, I’m certain MQoS would have been chosen as a successor over Elizabeth. But by the time francis died Elizabeth was already on the throne at the beginning of her 40+ year reign and wasn’t about to give it up to her little cousin. 😊

Background yes, but this is nuts. I pray it gets more focused on Mary QoS. EDIT.. nope it didn't get better. A total of 10 minutes out of 40 spent on the supposed title subject, the rest was literally cut and inserted scenes from the Royalty TV shows about Henry VIII and Elizabeth 1. They didnt even tell the 3 most well known issues with the execution because they said she was executed and went directly back to the H and E scenes aforementioned.

Interesting to see how people judge these two women. Yes, they had a lot in common but were different. However, the biggest challenge for these two women was how everything depended on how the males in their life’s ruled, left male heirs, married them or not, etc. I don’t think it’s fair to say Elizabeth served her people and that she was a better monarch.. imagine living a life where despite you having a strong line of succession, that it counts for nothing if you marry a loser!

She plotted to kill Elizabeth more than once. She was adulterous, emotional, dishonest, erratic she was a mess! The people who revered Mary were those swayed by charm and beauty which she had in spades, and that's what's kept people's interest all these years. Well, that and the murder, adultery, plots, imprisonment & execution, haha. Mary wanted to rule, not serve. A lot of not nice things can be said about Elizabeth too, but she did try to do her best for the good of England, and she created stability. Mary didn't give a shit about that.

Elizabeth learned to play the long game…. Declared a bastard by the young age of 3… Waiting out her brother and sister before finally it was her turn… Unfortunately Mary QoS never learned that since she was born royal… plus allowing herself to be manipulated by men overmuch. If she had just avoided the scandal with bothwell and married who Elizabeth wanted, Elizabeth would have written her into the succession as she had no heir, and she would have united England and Scotland and not her son. Elizabeth was older than Mary and in worse health also, chances are if she had waited long enough Elizabeth also might have made her queen. But because of her unfortunate circumstances and impatience she never became queen of England.

Great documentary but in a series, why do you keep using the same interview scenes over and over and over and over again ? Yes I know Jane, Mary, Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth they were all women and they were all "the first woman to ever..." I get it. They don't have to mention it every 2 minutes. Perhaps because the series is made by women who feel like they have something to prove that they mention it so often. Same as how in "Cleopatra" by Jada Pinkett Smith Cleopatra is portrayed as a feminist martyr/heroine/role model while Cleopatra must have turned around in her grave to have her image abused like that. Same with this series. Its a marvelous series. At 15:15 I disagree with Dr Owen Emmerson. The fact that a number of people(who happened to be female) in relations to Elizabeth were executed is no excuse to be wary or suspicious of MEN in general. The British governmental system was made a specific way and the people who were executed were executed with cause. Yes they were female but they would've been executed were they male. Plus women in general at that time were disproportionately way less likely of being executed as were men so I really have a problem with people making it sound like Elizabeth had some kind of right of being misandrist. It's not like they did things to her BECAUSE she was a woman. Cause and consequence if you ask me, and everyone back then was aware of that.

I adore Mary or Marie as she preferred the French version of her name. I was amazed how well educated she was. Her cousin, Elizabeth 1, is known for her erudition and formidable intellect yet Marie was highly educated too. She was 5ft 11inches tall. In the 16th Century that was incredibly tall for a woman! She was famed for her beauty, charm, and grace and had a beautiful regal carriage. She was gentle and very sweet by nature unlike Elizabeth! Unfortunately, she had no William Cecil who was her nemisis! Her marriage to Lord Darnley was a disaster as she found out to her horror he was a spoilt brat! Her nobles were ready to get rid of her and they did. I understand why she connived to write letters that incriminated her for her freedom. She was used and manipulated to be imprisoned by Elizabeth as she was too dangerous to have her freedom for she was Catholic, a successor to the English throne and a rival. I suspect Elizabeth never wanted to meet her as she was well aware of Marie's beauty and her charm and that alone was a bitter pill for Elizabeth. Her fate was tragic yret she faced her beheading with dignity and style of a regal queen.
