For what it’s worth. The bail is there to catch the line and guide it into the roller after the cast. So technically it’s worthless for vertical jigging. You just have to manually put the line on the roller after letting down. There are spinning reels specially made for surf and boat fishing that are bail-less. Great video as always! Beautiful fish.

Hi Jorg thanks for tuning in and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Hi Ben thanks for tuning in and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Yes indeed Mary is one fierce halibut fisherwomen - she consistently out-fishes everyone on the boat! It is always cool to check the underwater footage - I'm always surprised at how many fish are down near the bottom even if they aren't biting! Alaska has put a lot of restriction on keeping certain types of rockfish (a Yelloweye is a type of rockfish) to help preserve the species over time. They are really special fish so I don't mind catching and releasing. All the best and tight lines! Captain Zac

Awesome! Love the under water footage. Im curios about your rod and reel set up. Looking to buy a similar set up to use here in the Puget Sound. I’ve always used the traditional Penn reels for halibut, and salmon, but I wanna ad a spinning reel for Butts as well. Tight lines !

Hi Space Man thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! My halibut setup is a Penn Slammer III 8500 (high speed model) with 80lb PowerPro on a Penn Carnage II Jigging rod. I do have conventional Penn setups as well but I most often prefer the spinning setup for halibut jigging - nice feel during the jigging action and light enough action to feel the small fish yet strong enough to land barn doors. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

Awesome! Thanks for the info and the quick reply. That’s a sweet set up, and now I’m conflicted, lol I’d been looking at the St.Croix Mojo inshore jigging rod. Ether way I think I’m gonna pair it with your kind of reel. So you have a deal with Penn yet ? Creator code ? You should, your great advertisement for their products. Im gonna try that reel just cause I saw you use it. Lol Be safe up there y’all, and stop letting Mary out fish you, 🤣 Tight lines ! Peace !

@@SpaceMan-lr1os Sounds like an awesome combo either way! The Carnage II jigging rod has a really nice handle (ridges on the grip to fit your fingers) which can come in handy when jigging for halibut. Hi John thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Haha we love using spinning reels for halis - just find it to be a more natural jigging motion to have the reel trailing under the rod vs. balancing the conventional reel on top of the rod with every jigging motion. Hi I'm over here thanks for tuning in and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Welcome to the Pacific Northwest! I was saying "head thumps" in this video - referring to the head shakes that you typically feel when a halibut is on the line. In this case, I was wishing that I felt more head thumps since a skate doesn't thump at all. It ended up being a skate instead of a halibut, unfortunately! Hi guys...really enjoying your content...Question..I have a couple of 8000 size spinning reels ...would they be good for halibut fishing up there? If so what size rod would you recommend I pair them with ?! Thanks ..would love to fish with ya
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi EarthStrong 510 thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut footage! Yes indeed - 8000 series spinning reels would be fine for halibut. I'd go with a Penn Carnage III Jigging rod - the 6' heavy model which is rated for 80-200lb braid. www.cabelas.com/shop/en/penn-carnage-iii-jigging-spinning-rod I use 80lb braid but 65lb would be OK as well as long as you play the fish - not sure what line capacity your reels have but sometimes that determines line selection. Also, 65lb would have less drag for deep water fishing situations than 80lb. Are you visiting Alaska this summer? All the best and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Hi Swampy Douglas OBannon thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Are you going to one of the self guided lodges - Island Point or Green Rocks? I've spent a lot of time fishing that area over the years. I do have some videos on my channel from Petersburg (the title will say Petersburg, Alaska). There is a narrow window in late May early June where you can bear hunt and fish for king salmon. If targeting kings, mid June is probably better, if targeting bears then early / mid May is better. Generally speaking the halibut fishing improves as the season goes on. That said, I've had plenty of banners days halibut fishing in May in that area. Good luck on your trip and tight lines! Hi Sitka_Blacktail_Hunter thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! @CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action!
