One thing I wouldn't forget about Mary is that she was a Pillar when Florence & Diana left the group. Today we celebrate the Supremes legacy because of her.. 👌
@mattc20944 жыл бұрын
Indeed, she kept the supremes legacy alive for so many years... she was even looking recently to get a movie made about them too! I went on her website on Saturday, and on the contact page it said write to her for free 6x8 autographed photo... I thought this was so generous, so I thought I’d write in... and then the sad news just 4 days later, I felt so bad. Life’s precious
@moogooguypan25143 жыл бұрын
Diana kept the legacy alive by honoring them on tv specials and her world wide arena concerts singing the songs. Mary did also, but her audience was often 200 when Diana sang to 20,000. Mary also tarnished the legacy a great deal with her books, lies and game playing.

Mary wasn't vocally adept enough to be a true jazz singer like Ella Fitzgerald or even a Dinah Washington, but she definitely had a musical potential that was never realized. She had a beautiful timbre and was a better singer than Berry Gordy gave her credit for.

This is such a great video. At last we get to see and hear Mary Wilson singing lead as a member of the 60s Supremes. Gordy denied Flo and Mary the opportunity to shine. He could easily have given Mary and Flo at least 1 solo each on every Supremes album. That would've broadened the appeal and versatility of the group. There are so many album tracks with amazing backing arrangements that just didn't suit Diana's voice and she struggles to hit the notes- these would've been perfect for the other girls- playing to everyone's strengths in the group. Such a sad missed opportunity. My world will be empty without you Mary.

Diana never had any resentment issues with Mary. Diana actually helped to organize Mary's first solo performance the majority of the music industry's executives who were in attendance were invited by Diana, even Mary later said that "Diana was there for her." Mary made a career being the victim and belittling Ms Ross.

Yes, it would have wonderful if so many of the 'background' singers at Motown could have their individual talents nurtured. Motown was a relatively new company at that time; and I feel Berry didn't have the resources to support individual group members. But, why did he propel Diana Ross to the front? He saw that her voice, her persona, and her work ethic could propel the Supremes to venues more than just some arena concerts full of just pop music. He wanted Motown to elevate to a world wide company to be reckoned with; not just for the teenagers at the time.
