I met Mary when she was promoting Supreme Glamour. She was beautiful and so nice to everyone. I told her that Nathan Jones was one of my favorite 70s Supremes songs and that my middle name was Nathan. She started singing "Nathan Jones you been gone too long" and I joined in! She autographed my book "To Harry, my own Nathan Jones". She was truly a legend and one of the sweetest celebrities.

Mary gave me the single best piece of advice ever back when I was young and starting out in the business as a live nightclub act in the 1970s. She told me to always invest my money in the best sound reinforcement equipment (P.A.system and mics) that I could afford. She said that way no matter what happens in my career, no matter the dive bars we all have to play starting out, no matter if it's for big money or low money, no matter if you are a hit in the room or if you bomb in the room.... at least you'll sound good. Sound your best, do a show you're proud of, take the money, and with your head held high go on to the next gig. You'll end up with a reputation for sounding great because of that sound system you carry from gig to gig. Turned out she was right. Thanks for that Mary.

That's excellent advice. So many public performances by so many artists sound like crap, substituting volume for fidelity. I know that many in the audience are happy just to hear their idols perform, but if it sounds good, the performance will be a lot more memorable and the audiences will have more reason to return for more.

When I hear that someone dies suddenly, I think of my dad. He was in such great shape at 84. People couldn’t believe that Dad died. I still can’t believe it. March 8, 2020. We got to have a funeral. The next week, everything was shut down. We were lucky.

I worked at a correctional facility in California. One of our inmates, who was originally from Sweden I believe, loved Mary Wilson so much that when she immigrated to the USA, she legally changed her name to Mary Wilson! She was a very unusual inmate, always a pain in the rear end, but I always found it funny because Mary Wilson was obsessed with Mary Wilson.

Both were excellent books. Dreamgirls was a bestseller for fans wanting the scoop on Diana Ross, but I also have to highly recommend Mary's second book, Supreme Faith. Diana and Florence appear periodically in Supreme Faith, but the book mostly details the struggles of the group as it declined in popularity. Mary gradually took over almost all management aspects of the group, and the book is practically a master class in group management and dealing with a record label. The book also details Mary's abusive marriage through her divorce in the early 80s. It is a much more interesting read than most would suspect.

I met Mary in 2016 working at an Apple Store when she came in to buy a new phone. I tried to stay composed, but eventually had to tell her how huge of a fan I was of hers and the supremes. She was absolutely shocked. Being a heavily tattooed white man in my 20’s she found it hard to believe I was a fan of Motown, but once she could sense my true excitement and enthusiasm she started telling me stories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I’ll never forget that day. I think back on that chance interaction often and smile. Thank you Mary, hope you’re resting easy.

Hello Scott, I appreciate this respectful video in memory of Mary Wilson. She was always my favorite Supreme. However, I think you are mistaken in two of your statements. Motown did not exactly "throw the Supremes under the bus" as you stated. Its is true that Motown did not concentrate extra effort to promote them and their music. However, the Supremes were not an unsuccessful group after Diana Ross left. In fact, they had a string of hit songs while Diana Ross as a solo artist was having no hit songs. Please give those lovely ladies of the new Supremes proper credit. You also stated that in the Holy Cross Cemetery one must have a Catholic symbol of some kind on your gravestone "or you don't count." This statement is disparaging of the Roman Catholic Church, and has no basis in fact. It might be wise to communicate with a representative of Holy Cross Cemetery with your concerns before making such a disparaging statement in a video. The remains of Mary Wilson are buried at Holy Cross. She counts. And I'm sure that the people in the office of the cemetery would agree.

@@maskedavenger2578😂😂 you're right about that. Berry Gordy figured Florence voice was too soulful to crossover. Diane's voice would appeal to the pop audience. So he made Diane the lead singer and changed the stage name to Diana. The 1st album Meet The Supremes with Florence doing most of the lead vocals underperformed. The 2nd album made history with Diana up front. Plus Berry was romantically involved with a then 19/20 yr old Diana.

@@gregorybush3224 Diana Ross didn’t have a very strong voice ,but it suited the more pop soul type of songs from Holland Dozier ,which were created to cross over into the mainstream pop charts . I also liked Mary Wells hit My Guy ,later on I got into other Motown stuff. A lot of good Motown recordings never got released ,& now we can get many of them on CD . But They had a handful of gold million selling Hits & I remember seeing them on television many many many times til Ms. Wilson disbanded her group. I remember when She & they came back home to Detroit for the last time in 1976 at The Roostertail Club on the Detroit river front for a week & it was Sold Out.. They were on the news & great stories & write ups in all the newspapers. most of the attention was focused on Mary, it was the 1st Homecoming for them since the early 1970s.. thank you again. this was nice.. When I went to Mary Wilson’s apartment in NYC on the Upper West Side many years ago she showed me that very same poster (I think hers was real). She had a two bedroom in a newer Trump building and it had a lot of leopard furniture and walls but it was classy.

I was in Detroit in the late 80's, the sales rep I was with, was pointing out various buildings & neighborhoods. As we were coming into downtown, he pointed out a building off in the distance, he told me it was the public housing where the Supremes were raised.

Great storytelling! I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Wilson after a concert in Cincinnati. Circumstances allowed me to drink champagne and chat with her (privately and at a booth) at an upscale bar (Orchid Court at The Netherland Plaza) for almost two hours. She got a little toasted, while still in full stage make-up. No fans bothered us at all. My favorite story she shared is a little "blue"...... She enjoyed the company of well-endowed white men, bragging about dating Tom Jones and James Caan. I was a bit shocked, but damn, I had a private audience with Mary Wilson! Years later, which turned-out to be her final appearance at Music Hall in Cincinnati, she didn't remember me. She's was only several years older than me, so I was saddened. But I had a private audience with Mary Wilson!

I also was very fortunate to meet not only Miss Mary Wilson, but also Miss Cindy Birdsong, and Miss Scherrie Payne at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Erlanger, Kentucky (just one week before it burned down) right across the river from Cincinnati Ohio (my hometown), including her daughter, Turquessa, and Cindy’s son, David all backstage after the show, including Mary and Cindy, taking a photo with me and all three autographing my dinner table placard! She was SO GRACIOUS and inspiring! That was indeed a night to remember🎉❤ May you Rest In Peace 🙏🏻 Ms. Wilson…

Mary was actually from Mississippi. Her father decided to leave the south for a better life. They moved from there to Chicago when Mary was about 3 or 4. She was my favorite Supreme of the trio and, yes, she should have gotten more recognition for keeping the Supremes alive even after Diana left the group. I'm glad Scott made this video.

omg My inner fangirl is going off, knowing your deep connection with Motown itself. Some songs really had a hold on me. We had an 8 track of the greatest hits, the blue one. My cousins had the pink and yellow ones. As a long time fan of your work, talking about the Supremes resonated with me. Thank you so much!

My only claim to anything to do with the Supremes was at the local art gallery in Blackpool England, they had a display of the dresses and shoes and costumes of the Supremes,I was so amazed they altered there own dresses by cutting and sewing them ! And I also saw the yellow t shirts from the music Love Child, and lots of shoes, one pair did have written in pen inside in big letters Mary Wilson,so did Mary write her own name in her shoes ? Great music, great video Thanks😃

Someday We'll Be Together was not meant to be a Supremes farewell record. It was recorded to be Diana Ross' first solo single. Berry Gordy didn't want Diana to leave the group without a final hit record which they were having trouble attaining. When he heard SWBT he knew he heard a hit and insisted it be released as a Supremes record. It went to #1, Diana went solo.

I love me some Mary…but I guess when you have so many hits you lose track of when they were released. “I Hear A Symphony” was actually released at the end of 1965 (October 6th to be exact) and hit #1 - 5 weeks later that November . In February 1965, “Stop In The Name Of Love” was climbing the charts and went to #1 the day after Diana’s 21st bday on March 27. The Supremes had so many great hits that have stood the test of time. Still love them! ❤️❤️❤️

Mary looked so gorgeous, energetic and hopeful two days before her death. I researched the cause and she had hypertension heart disease. If she stayed on top of her high blood pressure with monitoring and the right meds, it could have been prevented. High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart attack deaths. It is possible to look and feel great, not knowing the inner ticking time bomb. The “natural causes” declaration is a missed opportunity to educate people about this common cause of death.

I thought I heard that when DR left the Supremes that the new Supremes did not perform at many of the same places that the Original Supremes performed. I guess they didn't want the new Supremes to get in the way of DR performing at the same places.

@@bubaby7867When Diana left the Supremes, most of the top tier support staff assigned with the group left with her. Mary, Jean and Cindy literally had to start from scratch. Mary even said so in her book. They were basically a brand new group. And then there was the whole thing about Berry Gordy changing his mind about Jean Terrell at the last minute. So sad...but that's show business!

In 1993 we stayed across the road from the Frontier. Every now and then you could hear music blast out. When we walked over to see what was happening it came from a group of Hotel Union workers who were on strike over know wages. I asked how long they had been on strike and was staggered to find out they had been out for 23 months! One of the demonstrators had a placard which said Room???? Is never available to the public as it rumoured to be used to manufacture Drugs!

I appreciate your video on her. I always felt she had that natural personality that had nothing to do with showbiz beautiful people. One other thing i had to smile about was that book of matches. I have a gallon milk jug filled with match books form different traveled locations , also from local locations from the 70s. and which none have been used.
