Trivia: As the troupe struggled with financing the movie, they got help from George Harrison (of Beatles fame) who funded 3/4 of the production budget (after the original investors pulled out because they feared backlash from the religious public) simply because he "wanted to see the movie". On this, Eric Idle commented that that's likely the worlds' most expensive cinema ticket.

Harrison also bought the original show's video from the BBC, just because wanted to watch it again. The BBC had a habit of recording over the original videos of their shows. So in addition to being a rock icon, he saved Monty Python for us nerds. You can also spot Harrison as an extra during the Sermon on the Mount scene.

When they shot the Biggus Dickus scene, they replaced the extras playing the guards just before shooting. The extras had no idea what was going to happen and was just told "Wear the uniform and stand at attention. Don't break character for anything" And then Mcihael Palin went to town on them.

That's not true, people need to stop regurgitating baseless rumors. From Michael Palins diary: "A delay for lighting, then a very gruelling day shooting the first Pilate scene. The need to keep the vital giggling ingredient fresh and spontaneous made it a little bit harder to play than an ordinary scene with set words and reactions. The success of this scene will depend on the genuineness of the guard’s reaction to Pilate. It can’t all be acted, it must be felt. So I have to do a great deal of ad-libbing at the end of the scene - and by the end of the day I must have thought up over twenty new names for Biggus Dickus’ wife - ranging from the appallingly facetious Incontinentia Buttox to the occasional piece of inspiration which resulted in breakdown from the guards. Bernard McKenna in particular did the nose trick spectacularly - once right down my toga**." The actors knew perfectly well the scene they were about to shoot, it's just that some words and phrases were ad-libbed by Palin every scene to keep a factor of surprise. There was also no mention of actors not being paid should they laugh. It's all bollokcs, stop spreading this crap.

Here's a touching thing about "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life": This song was sung at Graham Chapman's funeral in 1989 by all in attendance, including the five remaining Pythons. I belive there's a video on YT showing John Cleese giving the eulogy at that funeral. When you watch this, keep in mind that it was Graham Chapman himself who helped craft the eulogy.

The Graal is closer to the TV show they used to do, where absurdity was favoured over narrative - (and the budget was minimal). But Brian is widely considered their masterpiece, by a long shot. They did make a third movie, The Meaning of Life, which is basically their TV show in movie format. In other words a lot of unrelated sketches barely held together by the topic in the movie title. You've probably seen few requests for it - it is most people's least favourite Python movie.

Back in 1993 I lived in Manchester and the city had put in a bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games. Obviously it lost out to Sydney, but the announcement was shown live on a big screen in Manchester and the crowd spontaneously launched into “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. A couple of years before Life of Brian was released, Franco Zeffirelli made a TV miniseries with a stacked cast named Jesus of Nazareth. The Pythons ended up using many of the same sets and locations for Life of Brian which adds to the humour if you have seen both.

Watching the Monty Python movies is a great start to continue with Terry Gilliam's movies. (He directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail) His movies are often surreal with lots of dreams and fantasies depicted. Not just the wacky absurdities of Monty Python. Gilliam was sort of the odd one out in Monty Python as the only American in the group. He did all the animations and wasn't acting as much as the others in the TV series. It's hard for me to pick favourites by him, as he's in my top five directors, but here's a few recommendations: 1981 - Time Bandits 1985 - Brazil 1988 - The Adventures of Baron Munchausen 1991 - The Fisher King 1995 - Twelve Monkeys 1998 - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 2009 - The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Perhaps some are worthy to put in a future poll?

This is an absolute favorite for me, which I have watched many times and have watched lots of reactions. Thanks for yours. My personal Brian story is that, while watching it at home a few years ago, I had a stroke, and hadn't even got to the Biggus Dickus scene yet! Of course, I finished the movie.

Monty Python were the absolute kings of blending hilarious humor with brutally honest truths. This movie was personally sponsored by George Harrison of The Beatles because he liked monthly python so much in what has been described as the most expensive movie ticket in history

Eric Idle played both the guy who claimed he was Brian on the cross and immediately afterwards the guy who sings the ending song. Its fair not to recognize him by his looks but the cockney accent he used is unmistakable. I don't think I caught it on my first watch either but by the second I could immediately tell.

The movie was banned by the religious establishment in certain town in the UK. When the actress who played Judith (Brian's girlfriend) was elected mayor of one of those towns, she arranged a public viewing of the movie in the town square.

Classic movie. Thankfully my Dad showed me Monty Python early in my life. These movies and sketches never get old. Some fun facts: George Harrison, the former member of the Beatles and a long-time Python fan, arranged financing for Life of Brian through the formation of his HandMade Films company. And why does a lot in the movie look so good and accurate? The film was shot on location in Monastir, Tunisia, which allowed the production to reuse sets from Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth (1977).

Yepp, pretty much all discussions we have today that we think are modern have been said and done long, long ago. Loretta scene was nothing really all that new, even back then. Its just we think everything started 15 years ago.

If you're going to check out any Pink Panther movies, you have to start with the Peter Sellers ones that started in 1964. Inspector Closeau actually debuted in A Shot in the Dark (1964) that was released before the first Pink Panther film.

Fun fact: For the cross scene, each actor had a cross that was sized for them but at the last minute, the swapped them all around so that everyone was on a ill fitting cross.

As silly and funny these movies are they still delivering a deeper message. Just take the arguing about the sandals and the gourd for example, pretty accurate depiction of people actually following the same god but different ideas of it.

Heres some fun facts about the ancient romans: - They had food that would sound revolting to some of us. For exanple that rotten fish sauce they loved. -Once when he was tqenty Julius Caesar was kidnapped by pirates. He was quite comfortable and got along with his captors well enough, even if he did occasionally tell them he'd have tgem hunted down and crucified. When he was released, he hunted them fown and sentenced them to it, but changed his mind at the last minute and slit their throats instead. - They had a habit of incorpoating inventions and other things of the people they cobquered into Roman Culture, military and architecture.

I thought it was interesting how they were ahead of their time too. The splitting thing was about various miners and other Trade Union groups. Basically this came out just before Regan & Thatcher completely changed what everyone today think is the “norm”. Whereas postwar Keynesian economics was responsible for the phenomenal success and social mobility of boomers (as a child of working class boomers who got their opportunity post war I’m a perfect example but I’m surrounded by so many in the same position who just aren’t able to see that they wouldn’t be where they are without that benefit and boomers got into power and changed the game to favour those who were already wealthy and the real success is that they’ve persuaded everyone that no other way works or should work - which simply isn’t true, it’s just our current economic model (most clearly on display in the US) heavily benefits those already wealthy despite the fact we have 35 years of postwar keyseian economics showing how well and equitable things can be. The highest tax rate till the 80’s was 70% in the US whereas that’s outside the realm of what could be imagined there today - despite the fact it would be in the best interests of at least 80% of the population and arguably everyone. Basically things could have been very different and we could have benefited so many more. The church viciously attacked this film at the time and I’m glad to see they wouldn’t be in as position to do so (outside the US) today!

I definitely prefer this one because although there’s the same feeling as if the scenes are all a bunch of comedy sketches/skits strung together, there’s a much clearer sense of a unifying theme and overall story arc, from the beginning of Brian’s life to the end. (And the higher budget doesn’t hurt..)

8:10 - Absurd humour was the style of Monty Python. A man wanting to be a woman and have babies etc... was just a typical Monty Python absurdity. No one in the 1970's (with maybe the exception of one or two folk living in a padded cell) actually thought this was anything other than a joke. Fast forward to 2024 Clownworld - "Oh it's so progressive...." LOL!
