It was weirdly funny how he kept thinking he had a gotcha by saying Alsobooks kept mentioning him being a Republican, like it was irrelevant, then she kept schooling him on the FACT that if Republicans take control of the Senate, the extremists will have the power to set the agenda and decide judges. Rick Scott, if he's reelected (which I hope he's not), as Senate Majority Leader, and Lindsey Graham as the head of the Judicial Committee would be a nightmare. As for those who tout him "working with Democrats" as Governor, he had no choice because Maryland's legislature has a Democratic majority. Indeed, he's taken credit for things the legislature has passed even when left to his own devices, I suspect he wouldn't have advocated for the policies he took credit for. In an extremely divided Senate, I doubt he'd have to courage to buck the Republican Project 2025 agenda, when going against Republicans should severely curtail his ability to get power. He showed himself to be a coward and a fool by saying he didn't know whether he would've voted for Supreme Court Justice Brett "Devil's Triangle" Kavanaugh. Everyone who watched those hearings had an opinion, even if it was differing opinions. So, either Hogan was too lazy to use even a minimal effort to watch, or more likely, he's LYING and would've voted for accused attempted rapist Kavanaugh, but Hogan knows that answer won't fly in Maryland, so he lies that he doesn't know. Between that answer and him voting for a dead person for President, it's disqualifying for the job of Senator where his major job duty would be voting.

It doesn't matter if Hogan is moderate any more than a Republican U.S. House candidate in a blue district is. At the end of the day, the rest of their caucus aren't, and their one "moderate" vote won't achieve anything. By the way, the reason why most politicians present their positions as being soft or hard is entirely dependent on their electorate. In 2022, Republican gubernatorial candidates in California and New York softened their positions because the conjecture required so. Ted Cruz has refused to say whether he supports exceptions for rape and incest not contained in Texas's draconian law because even in red Texas, it's too extreme. On the other hand, candidates in ruby red states like Arkansas are free to spew the most dangerous and asinine ideas because they know they don't risk their Republican electorate not reelecting them.

The day after Larry Hogan became Maryland’s 62nd governor in 2015, the executive director of the Maryland State Ethics Commission, Michael Lord, sent him a letter. Hogan was coming to the top job not just as a politician but as president and principal owner of HOGAN, a multi-purpose real estate brokerage firm based in Annapolis. Lord was writing to tell Hogan that, as governor, he “should not personally participate in any matter that may come before a state agency that involves his business.” To be completely clear, Lord added that “participation includes supervision of others involved in a matter.” That put Hogan in a spot. By its own account, HOGAN represented a “who’s who” of the Maryland real estate industry. As governor, Hogan’s powers would range from setting rules for housing projects to awarding grants and tax credits to developers. So Hogan entered into a trust agreement that he said would prevent conflicts of interest. But it was not a blind trust. He put his brother Timothy in charge of the firm and made several executives at the firm trustees. In a letter to Lord, Hogan wrote that the agreement would allow him to remain apprised of his firm’s investments, investors, and other matters including the location of its real estate projects. In April 2016, 15 months after Hogan took office, the State Ethics Commission approved the arrangement. If Hogan hoped that the agreement would prevent the appearance of a conflict of interest, it didn’t. Over Hogan’s eight years in office, nearly 40% of the competitive affordable housing awards overseen by the governor went to developers listed as clients on HOGAN’s website, according to a TIME review of public records. Those awards were concentrated among six developers who competed against more than 60 other companies during that time. As one of three members of the Board of Public Works, an administrative body that determines how taxpayer money gets spent, Hogan voted on five occasions to issue additional loans or grants to four of those same developers, according to public records. All the while, Hogan continued to hold regular meetings with his company’s leaders, according to his official meeting calendar, which was obtained by the Washington Monthly via a FOIA request in 2019. "It's definitely a serious conflict of interest," says Richard Painter, chief White House ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush Administration. "He should have stayed away from it."

@smtpgirl15 күн бұрын
With his surprise announcement to run for the United States Senate, former Gov. Larry Hogan is seeking to move from a government executive to legislative role. During his eight years as governor, Hogan left an official record of where he stands on critical issues - his vetoes of state legislation perhaps serving as the clearest expression of his policy positions. As relates to Maryland workers and their families, Hogan vetoed legislation to gradually increase the minimum wage to $15 over several years. Hogan also vetoed an earned sick leave bill requiring workers to be given five paid sick days per year, and the establishment of a paid family and medical leave insurance program. The Maryland General Assembly overrode these vetoes with the hard work of a broad coalition of civic, labor, small business and faith groups, state legislative leaders and the public. On the issue of reproductive justice and access to abortion care, Hogan vetoed a law to increase the number of trained providers and availability of services, including in the two-thirds of Maryland counties without a single provider. Hogan issued his veto just as the Supreme Court was preparing to overturn Roe v. Wade and Maryland was facing the imminent need to provide care to patients from neighboring states like West Virginia. After the Maryland General Assembly overrode his veto, Hogan denied a request from the state comptroller to immediately release $3.5 million in appropriated funds for training new providers in quality and safe care. On education, Hogan vetoed the landmark reform legislation called Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, which was developed by the Kirwan Commission after extensive input and careful study. The legislature overrode Hogan’s veto to enact this 10-year plan to “expand pre-kindergarten programs and increase funding for schools with high concentrations of poverty, increase pay and career opportunities for teachers, create new career pathways for high schoolers who don’t plan to attend college, and establish an accountability board….” On preventing gun violence, Hogan vetoed background checks for the sale and transfer of shotguns and rifles, legislation eventually enacted over his veto in response to a 2018 mass shooting at the Capital Gazette newsroom in which five people were killed and two people wounded by a gunman using a shotgun. On voting, Hogan vetoed a bill that would have given voters an opportunity to sign their mail-in ballots if they forgot to do so. In 2015, Hogan vetoed a bill - subsequently overridden - to allow approximately 44,000 ex-felons on probation or parole to restore their voting rights. Turning to other issues, Hogan canceled the Red Line light rail project for Baltimore; vetoed legislation to prevent eviction of tenants with pending applications for rental assistance in response to Covid-related economic hardship; and vetoed funding for the Prescription Drug Affordability Board. Many Marylanders likely are unaware of Hogan’s record on these policy issues for two main reasons. First, on a large number of these issues, Maryland state legislators overrode Hogan’s vetoes meaning that the policies became law and Hogan’s opposition no longer affected the public. Second, as a skilled politician, Hogan intentionally downplayed and avoided attention to positions that were unpopular. Indeed, Hogan’s video announcement for Senate on Feb. 9 is almost completely devoid of any mention of policy other than taking credit for tax cuts and a budget surplus. Hogan is a traditional, “pro-business” Republican whose record should appeal to traditional Maryland Republicans. However, the Republican Party in Maryland and nationally are controlled by its Trump and MAGA wing. To his credit, as governor, Hogan acknowledged Covid as a public health emergency and supported policies to limit its spread. He also stated, in what should be unremarkable, that President Biden won the election in 2020. In an evenly divided U.S. Senate, the most important question will be whether Democrats or Republicans control the majority and the agenda and which party is more likely to govern in the public interest. Based on his record, Hogan would align with Senate Republican leadership. Perhaps for these reasons, back in 2022 when being courted to challenge Chris Van Hollen, Hogan said, “I don’t have a burning desire to serve in the U.S. Senate.” Maryland voters should be informed about important policy issues not only from the campaigns but also from the nonprofits, state policymakers and their constituents who have worked so hard to develop and implement them.

For anyone that thinks PG county is being governed properly, I challenge you to just take a short car ride, to your surrounding counties and compare the amities, quality of healthy food selections, shopping facilities, and just over all up keep of the area compared to PG county. If you live in PG county ask yourself one simple question, with all of high wage earning people that live there, why do you always have to travel Out of your community when you want quality dining, shopping, entertainment Ect. The county executives do nothing for you but accept kick backs to build more houses.

@@psgchisolm to my point, all they are doing is just building houses and nothing else, where are the book stores? Why do we only have Chinese carry outs, and liquor stores on every corner, all of the food options are nothing but fast food. And to my point again yes PG county has a large minority group, that brings in a lot of revenue, and that revenue should be spent in our own community. We should not have to travel to Virginia, DC, or MO county, etc for higher class service. Everyone from PG county knows this is a fact. We can build all these homes, but what about the shopping options so we can keep the money in our community which can help the education system, extra curricular activities for the youth and small business owners.

My take, lemme know what you think: Although I want to turn the Senate and White House blue, I believe we Democrats DO have an equal or greater stake in saving the Republican party from itself. We need a sensible, honorable opposition to help keep ourselves in check AND to finally raise the bar of political discourse/policy above Culture War politics. Even if he won't always vote the way I'd prefer, I believe Hogan is mostly acting in good faith (I say "mostly" because he IS a politician). That's not to say Alsobrooks doesn't ever act in good faith either, but right now I think it's more important to help create more of a space for good that kind of pragmatic good faith in the opposition. Show that there's a path for moderates in the halls of power. This country won't function if its main political blocks only see each other as enemies rather than coworkers who disagree. I've never seen a bird fly with only a left wing- or only a right wing. The divide shouldn't be between right and left, but between the people who are willing to work together despite their differences towards the common good, and those who'd rather burn it all down just so they can be king of the ashes.

Hogan sounded like a fool for having voted in this election for Ronald Regan via write in. Maryland has a list of official write in options of people who made the effort to be eligible for write in, and a dead president, who served two terms and wouldn't be able to have a third if he was alive, isn't on the official write in list. If a random person wants to write in Daffy Duck and not have that vote counted in deep Blue Maryland, that's their decision, but someone running for a job where the main job duty is voting, it's appalling and disqualifying. Furthermore, he just looks like a dolt by telling people about his write in for a dead person. Republicans like to claim there is some mythical slew of dead voters voting, and this guy voted for a dead person for President and dodged the question of what he would do in a swing state, which is basically an admission that he'd enable Trump in a swing state.
