Rachel just did the fancy solve to avoid embarrassing the comedians with the simple version: (100/25)x(75-3)+1 Rachel's fancy sum uses (100-3)x3-2 with the second 3 provided by 75=3x25 while the 2 is provided by 50=2x25. So it is: [(100-3)x(3x25)-(2x25)]/25

To pluralise an English word in the vast majority of cases then simply add a letter “s”. Thus, one American, two Americans. An apostrophe isn’t used to make a singular noun into a plural noun. Hopefully your maths is better than your English!

It's just an algebraic manipulation (specifically, the distributive property) that enables you to effectively use a number twice without actually using it twice. Start with 3 * 100 = 300, and note that you'd like to reduce this by 11. Taking off 3 * 3 = 9 would help, and you can make another 3 with 75/25, but you've already used the first 3. But the distributive property tells us that 100*3 - 3*3 is equal to (100-3) * 3 Take a 3 off the 100 _before_ multiplying by 3, and you've effectively used the first 3 twice. So we're at (100-3) * 75/25 That's 291. Now, can you make a 2 to take away to get to 289? Well, 50/25 = 2, but you've already used the 25. Algebra to the rescue! What we want is (100-3) * 75/25 - 50/25 That can be rearranged as ((100-3) * 75) / 25 - 50/25 and then, with the distributive property, that's equal to ((100-3) * 75 - 50) / 25 which is exactly what Rachel did. The reason she asked for a calculator to verify is because she hadn't done those steps in that order yet, so didn't yet know that the intermediate calculations would give a 7275 and 7225, and she wanted to make sure it was right. TL;DR: Rachel effectively did 3 * 100 = 300 75 / 25 = 3 3 * 3 = 9 300 - 9 = 291 50 / 25 = 2 291 - 2 = 289 but just did a couple of algebraic manipulations to avoid actually using the 3 and the 25 twice.
