Phenomenal! It’s amazing how the simplest forms of art are the most complex!

I really want to thank you for the immense value of your tutorial. You are a natural in many ways, your explanations of techniques and how to read the wood are precious!!! But the real jewel is the spontaneous comments and life observations that you share while sharing your knowledge!!! Many, many thanks!

A piece of “wood” was made a “live fruit” by use of your talent and imagination. I can not fathom how you have managed to learn and teach the basics as well as advanced technique of carving. Your passion to teach is admirable. Congratulations for being so thoughtful. Please keep publishing, us hacks could always learn more. Thanks again.

Excellent tutorial, I am planning on carving a frame for one of my paintings. The painting is a rose and I want the frame to have rose stems, thorns and a rose in each corner. The wood is pine. This will be my first experience at carving. I know I'm biting off more than I can chew, but hey, that's just me. I would like to add color to frame, maybe by making my own stains. Do you cover any staining processes?

It's so satisfying seeing you work on basswood because it shaves like butter! Currently, I'm doing a project on a log of driftwood and it's proven a fair challenge. It's not secured so I'm fighting to hold it the whole time, it's a tubular surface instead of flat and maybe it's because of the wood type (pine, I'm not too sure) or the fact that it's driftwood but it can flake off/get chewed up easily on the very detailed areas. I'll still probably just use whatever I come across outside but if I'm ever looking in stores, I'll be sure to try out a nice flat piece of bass!

It might be useful to show the effects of a damaging cut so folks can learn exactly what you mean by not following the grain pattern. Excellent video. Thanks so much for this!

I’ve been watch your beginner videos and have one question where can I find templates for your carvings. I can’t seem to draw a stick figure much less a peach you have in this lesson. Your videos are great. Thanks

I have a dumb question, but I'm not following the bit about switching directions for the grain. I just saw a vid by someone else who explained the same thing (he mentioned learning from your videos). What is confusing is if you are looking at a piece of wood, as in this video, the grain looks like it runs left to right (or right to left, whatever) so if you are chiseling a pattern such as your peach on the wood, it seems like almost all of the circumference of the peach is against the grain? I don't know if I'm making sense. Is there a specific video that discusses this in more detail?

You want to go with the grain on the side that is against the wood you want to keep.
