I think John REALLY appreciated the exercise of taking a small portion of someone else's song, one you haven't heard completely and aren't influenced by and making it your own. One of the cooler things I've seen like this was when Linkin Park was gearing up to release A Thousand Suns, they did a remix contest for The Catalyst where only small snippets of various stems were provided and there was no explanation of how they fit together in the context of the song. It was so fun to hear everyone's interpretations of how the song might sound or how it could be twisted into another genre or another form, all without having the bias of hearing the original in full. Pinegrove did something with their last album where they posted the chords and lyrics and asked people to cover the songs, weeks before they were actually released, which was cool too.
