I know this song has had an effect on me since I have had dreams of it a few times. This doesn't happen very often. The more I listen to it, the more I realize that this truly is a really great song. Haunting, melancholy, beautifully sung with a gorgeous arrangement. Rick was trying really hard not to cry a few times. Rhett was also moved. You have created something truly beautiful that you should be proud of Mary.

Viola, cello, strings in general... I LOVE to arrange with them, as with the many other "orchestral" instruments. It's important to have a variety of "orchestrations" in your musical listening menu. Tomita did some VERY nice "pure synthetic" renditions of amazing classics. Led Zeppelin had so much variety in their choices - folk to hard rock to orchestral hybrid... Beatles... Yeah... Martha My Dear from White album - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (the whole album) Steely Dan... Anyone, anyone??? On and on. Please, may humans continually experiment with orchestration. Or,... at least reptiles, amphibians, insects and extra-terrestrials...

A truly sad but beautiful song. Interesting dynamic of the relationship between 3 great musicians listening to the newbies latest song. I really think this was a very emotional situation for Rick. At 2:35 he stays shaking his head really hard to fight back the emotion. It's the same thing I do myself. Watching Mary watch Rick his precious. Rick doesn't look at Mary throughout the play of the song for probably a couple of reasons, 1) Wants to really focus on the artistry of what makes this song great and 2) didn't want to start tearing up due to the sad feeling of the song. I loved this video so much!

I love it. Great song Mary. I particularly like the quality musicianship in the structure. I love how it develops.. It is like a journey musically, and as it goes into new places it doesn't have to go back and revisit, not formulaic. How the drums and other instruments open it up a ways in.. and the very interesting new chords struck at the vocal highs at 3:46 and moves again right after at 3:50. Both Rick and Rhett heard that and so did I. It's interesting, beautiful, it develops and takes the listener to a destination. What good music should be.

Amazing song and amazing singing. What I found interesting was the musical bridge. After the first time through the chord progression I was able to anticipate WHEN it repeated. Never had that happen on a first listen! I’m not saying that it was predictable, but that it was the right and natural direction. How you ended the bridge, however, was the sweet surprise. Your voice, the guitar, and the strings went so well together. The drums were the only issue I had with the song. I would’ve waited until the bridge to introduce them, or have no drums at all, and I’m a drummer! 😊 Ultimately, it is YOUR song, Mary, and you should create it the way you want. I will be adding this to my Spotify playlist!

I can imagine a live jam version where real drums subtly do whatever the electricity in the air makes all the players feel together in a room... I've noticed that when people's comments are mostly on production and arrangement, that's because the song itself really didn't hit them. I would have liked to have seen Rick really open up on the Mary's piece on how to take it to the next level, from pleasant to powerful.
@kickstar12 жыл бұрын
good point. sometimes there is no way to take it to the next level; you just need to write another song. i didnt realize until i read your comment that my reaction was the same - nice, strings arrangement etc. but not really a reaction to the song itself

To be fair to them, Mary specifically asked what they thought of the production.
@SuperKagey12 жыл бұрын
yeah. it's missing a vocal hook - or lyrics that grab you. At one point, the vocals become just another instrument and we can't even make out what the song's about. I've listened to it twice and still can't tell you what I'm supposed to get from it.. that he's alone? or she's alone? and meet me by the great wave? huh? maybe too poetic for my taste.
@michaelskywalker30892 жыл бұрын
I agree. Firstly, I do not feel this is the best song that Mary has composed that deserves such excellent arrangement and production. The changes were interesting and surprisingly sophisticated, given the brief exposure to her music that I have had. To improve the song I would build more harmonies based on the distinctly deep and warm vocal tone Mary has at the bass and baritone level. I might introduce a small synthesizer or alternate instrument part to punctuate the emotional flow of the song that seems to be missing. Also, a better rhythm track might generate a better hook but that risks destroying the indie vibe of the song.
