Your tire lever+screwdriver trick (out of Pedro's fresh shoehorns) is working very well.. key is to exert great force slowly, with great control, going around like you would to tap off a crown bearing race off a fork.. can't go balls out, gradually increase force till it starts moving. One tip for installing the seal (did this 4x on 2 Shiver rebuilds last night) is to install the dust on the stanchion, and then slide the stanchion into the oil seal and hand press the dust seal into the fork. This is easier than trying slip the stanchion through both the dust and oil seal at the same time .

Thanks for your video. I just serviced my Marzocchi Junior T and Bomber Z3 today. I encountered a few problems: 1). The oil seals were really tight in all of the forks. I actually bent a screwdriver trying to remove them from the Junior T. I found that the solution was to use more leverage (I found an old tapered file that was quite long) and to pour boiling water over the lowers. The boiling water made the aluminium expand (aluminium is a very good conductor of heat) and allowed the oil seals to be levered out with much less force. 2). When I reinstalled the oil seals and dust seals, I didn't have enough clearance to hit them with a rubber mallet. I 3D printed a Marzocchi seal tool (I found it on thingiverse), coated the inside of the lowers with rubber grease, and then used my vice (a triton superjaws) to force them in. It worked much better than using a hammer. 3). The Junior T "lower nuts" can spin around if there isn't enough torque on them. I had to put the torque wrench on the bolts, and then put the entire assembly into my vice (ie. I was clamping down on my torque wrench - it went vice jaw - forks - torque wrench - vice jaw). Only then could I get enough frictional force to tighten the bolts to 12Nm. Thanks for the video. I returned to this a few times to make sure I was doing everything correctly.

These forks were and still are the shizzle. They made the distinctive whoosh/slurp sound as the open bath did its beautiful thing and i'd ride these over my Yaris any day of the week if they had more travel to balance the geometry of my bike.
@aceprater5397 Жыл бұрын
Totally dig the channel. I'm catching up. I have a question: can you swap innards of a fork to limit it's travel just a bit and thus fit a 29" QR wheel in there so it wont "bottom out" on the fork crown on hard hits? I have a few classic 90's all with Rockshox (Schwinn Homegrowns). I am looking to make one a gravel bike with light suspension. The Bokken 40c tubeless wheel fits in there now but it will bottom out on harder hits. If I can just limit the Travel 1/4" I think it would clear. I'm also wanting to try a coil/oil shock. Same question goes for both Rockshox/Marzocchi. All the newer quality 29" forks I see are tapered steerer tubes. BonusTomato: Also is there a framebuilder that specializes in converting aluminum frames to disk mount? I have 2 I would love to convert.
@ButterSuspension Жыл бұрын
It's "possible" but you'd have to make parts to do the conversion. Also, you would need more than a quarter inch of reduction as the difference between a 26 and 29 is more than that (even cut in half.)

Any hint what to do if the foot nut just keeps spinning in place? Actually the damper is spinning with the nut. Stop the damper with a screw driver? Hasn’t worked for me. I am working on a Z2 but this should be the same as with the Z1.

I've used a screwdriver before on other things but you want to be careful not to damage internals. You could also try an impact driver on the foot nut, I've had good luck with those.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to demonstrate this. I appreciate that these forks were designed to be serviceable. Good engineering. I've had recently had an experience very similar to yours with a pair of used bombers off eBay. '97 Z1's too. They were used completely dry. Unfortunately its created quite a few scratches on the bushings, presumably where grit has got in. The finish on the stanchion tubes is still good though. My question - should I be concerned about the bushings when I rebuild it? Which is harder the finish on tubes or the bushings?
@ButterSuspension2 жыл бұрын
The bushings are just a Teflon coating, so not very "tough" but they aren't supposed to be tough, they're slippery (especially with oil!) If the scratches aren't protruding inward towards the upper legs they might be okay. Especially since those bushings aren't made anymore...

Also they have the Air and Oil fill amounts. The bike was just being thrown away in my apartment complex needs Pedals and handle bars and a new rear shifter mount. Great video and I will defiantly use it as a reference when I am rebuilding these forks. The Rockshox Super Deluxe has been almost completely bombproof for the last few years, I've only seen 3 or 4 fail prematurely and they're always covered under warranty. The current Fox Float X2 has had a ton of problems, especially Trunnion models but they're taking care of those as they arise.
@Calispeedboi2 жыл бұрын
@@ButterSuspension does a trunnion design cause problems?
@ButterSuspension2 жыл бұрын
@@Calispeedboi it can, if the frame isn't aligned properly. With a regular eyelet, even a slightly wonky frame will still push in the center of the shock. With trunnion, you're relying on tight tolerances to push evenly on both sides of the upper mount. The Float X2 models that have been failing the most have been trunnion; the main damper bodies weren't strong enough to handle off kilter loading and they'd get creased, cracking on the inside of the damper tube.

@ButterSuspension Жыл бұрын
Great question. You have to compare apples to apples, or more specifically, good years to good years. The first generations of Bombers were made in Italy; super robust, simple moto designs, open bath/coil spring tech. Then they got more popular, decided to offer more models, different price points, more features, so they started to outsource some models to Suntour. The base model Honda Civic and the Acura NSX are both technically "Hondas"; Not all Bombers are the same, even if they have the same sticker.

I purchased a 2002 mxc bomber to put on a 2002 Marin Alpine Trail. Any advice for tuning? Higher VI, lower psi or lower VI, higher psi. I'm leaning towards lower VI and higher psi for better small bump compliance?
@ButterSuspension Жыл бұрын
Older Bombers are somewhat tuneable but you only have so much to work with. Lower psi will always get you better small bump but at the sacrifice of bottoming resistance. You could add a little more oil to make the air chamber smaller but again you only have so much room since there has to be a certain volume of air to allow the fork to compress fully. On these simpler models the VI is usually only changed to help speed up or slow down the damping if you can get what you need from the adjuster.

Greg, can you service a Rockshox Mag 21 (SL Ti) for early-to-mid 90's? They seem gosh darn technical especially removing the seals unless you pump up the fork and literally use air to blow off the fork legs which creates a type of lethal weapon that could cause serious harm even massive holes in your garage wall. Marzocchi bankrupting themselves by outsourcing to Suntour is by far the single saddest event in MTB component history. For decades Marzocchi kept Rockshox, Manitou and Fox, when they showed up, honest by showing that suspension didn't have to be unreliable, delicate overpriced crap. Without the constraints that reliable Marzocchis placed on them (MTB forums in the 90s and early 2000s almost universally gave Rockshox, Fox and Manitou service instructions as: Remove fork, throw in bin, fit Marzocchi), we've rapidly gone to the era of quite normal forks being $1000 and service intervals in the 20-30 hour range rather than being literal fit and forget for the open bath era Marzocchi forks. I suspect most people would be happy to pedal another few hundred grams of fork around when the payout was no servicing requirements at all. X-Fusion looked like they might be a worthy successor to Marzocchi when they first showed up, with their pricing being less outrageous, easy travel adjustment so one fork could suit many customers and all metal internals, but their fork bushings didn't last at all and they refused to sell them separately, so it was cheaper for me to buy a Rockshox than ship the fork to their nearest service center (None in my country) to replace the bushings, so that's what I did. The one that really boils my piss is the way a large cohort of Rockshox forks develop a load of bushing play relatively soon after buying, but it can be fixed by tapping the bushings down further into the leg as they sit on a cone, but the tools to do it are not available anywhere I can find, so I'm left either paying most of the price of the fork to ship it to be serviced or designing and building my own bushing setting tools. I'd love to see the bushing setting process for Rockshox forks covered on the channel.
