Thanks a million, man. Really appreciate the direction on this. There are many videos on Judy XC's, but I swear this one os the most comprehensive and helpful. Cheers, Nico

Great video. it is funny that some turn to dust yet the purple elastomer that came out of many early Indy's are stiill as new.
@el_micha11 ай бұрын
I was also surprised by that. Reason is the purple thing is a TPU (polyurethane), not an elastomer. It is a different material imho also more suited for the task than the elastomers used.

@@el_micha TPU is also a common 3d printing filament, so anyone who can't get replacements for their elastomers could try that path.

My first real fork was a '96 Judy XC! So many mods. First was to swap arch to one without a brake hanger. Might as well add Ti bolts. Upgrade to a Judy SL alloy cartridge. Speed Springs. What the heck, Englund Air cartridges. Remove the boots and install the plastic wipers. The last thing was a carbon arch and a Judy SL crown and steerer. Quite the Frankenfork!!!!!!!

i'm still hoping to find some of those upgreades for my 99 Judy Sl. the Arlo Englund total air and old Ti speed springs

Brings back memories of my old Judy DH long travel with the 80mm. I think both catridges blew out. never had problems with the bumper springs, always regreased them.

I used to drop the lowers on my SL every two weeks just to keep the mud at bay. I have an FSX carbon on my single speed right now, it's pretty terrible 🤣

Hey there! My brother recently died from a fentanyl overdose. I'm rebuilding his bike which is nothing fancy, an old Next Mountain Ridge. I am mostly finished, just need to take it in for a tune up but I would like to rebuild the fork. Are there any kits to rebuild these old cheap forks?
@ButterSuspension5 ай бұрын
Those bikes aren't really designed to be serviced at all; when the whole bike is $150 brand new, the only way to make a bike that price is to not consider service when designing the parts. Sorry to hear about your brother.

@@ButterSuspension Thank you for responding. Well, that definitely makes sense! I guess that means I need to start shopping for a 1" threaded fork! I read on one of the bike forums a bit ago that they are hard to find and expensive. This ought to be fun though! Any recommendations would be appreciated! Also I wanted to say thank you for the kind words.

Elastomers in this Judy XC are gone to mushy dust. There is no sign of a “skewer” either. Did some XCs not have a skewer?
@ButterSuspension Жыл бұрын
First gen had a skewer, later iterations had plastic spacers with pins on each side to kinda hold the elastomers together.

If I just ride on mostly concrete, would it be okay to go without the boots?
@ButterSuspension2 жыл бұрын
As someone that rode a Judy for many years in nasty mud, those boots seemed like a good idea but they actually kept IN as much water and mud as they kept out. As long as you keep up on basic maintenance the boots aren't necessary.

What’s the difference between the 96 xc and the 2000 xc. Would they work in the 2000 xc ?
@ButterSuspension2 жыл бұрын
Totally different internals overall, I believe. I don't have the schematic memorized on the 2000 stuff but I believe those are hydracoil (already coil with open bath oil damping) so nothing would translate.
