Good old DragonBall used be all about Martial arts and fighting in tournaments but Z turned it into something completely different with alien creatures, energy blasts, and transformations. The franchise has become a meme now. GT and Super shouldn't have been made in my opinion

people haven't seen gt and act like its the worst or so long..its literally watchable in like 22 days if you just set aside 65 minutes a day to watch the damn thing...21 days to watch 63 eps and then the last day to watch the finale and the movie...its very easy to watch actually...you can set aside 45 minutes a day and watch it in about 5 weeks..less than 34 days...if you can set aside 110 minutes you can watch it in 16 days...

I love the dig on fake-Namek; it's not MasakoX without "fake Namek didn't exist, moving on". XD Personally...I mostly agree with this list. The first one I disagree with is the Goku vs Junior arc. If there was something after it (like clashes between them), then it'd feel more like it was setting something big up. Instead, it merely set up that the two are rivals and then went into DBZ. Though the team-up was cool because of that, and seeing Piccolo change during the training and execution of the Saiyan saga, I'd put the initial Goku vs Junior arc as an A-tier at most. Everything else in the S-tier list, I agree with. I feel like the Otherworld Tournament should be lower (D tier at the highest), and the Buu saga should be E-tier at the highest. I guess it comes down to personal preference with the former (characters, ect), but to me it just wasn't interesting...and compared to how "high stakes" other tournament arcs felt (especially in the original DB), it just didn't have that same impact. As for the Buu saga...that entire thing (and all arcs in it) can barely even scrape the D-tier. Buu changed far too much in sometimes short amounts of times to really figure out what sort of villain he was, there was tons of wasted potential (Mystic Gohan, and even the fusion stuff was wasted and became more of comic relief than anything else). Honestly, IMO, the best part about it was seeing Mister Satan (Hercule) change throughout it and become a better person. And if that's the highlight of an arc where the world is in danger, then it could have happened under other circumstances. So, I'd put everything Buu-saga related in E-tier...at the highest. I also feel that everything after the Buu arc should be no higher than C-tier. I tried watching it, but the only interesting thing about the plot was seeing other universes; it wasn't particularly written well, and the characters were a bunch of wasted potential. As for the heroes, it was one cliche after another (such as Piccolo saving Gohan again just for the throwback). It felt like they were grasping at straws to try and make it feel like DBZ did way back when, but overall just failed. It was like watching a worse trainwreck than the Buu saga was. The Buu saga, I was at least able to watch until the end. The stuff after that? Couldn't even watch more than the first couple episodes of the arc. Honestly, I'd rather watch the very start of the DB series, the full arc of the initial journey to find the dragonballs, ten times in a row than watch anything after the Saiyaman saga even once. ...and not even going to go into GT. I'm sorry, but nothing GT should be higher than D-tier. Best thing about GT was the opening song. XD I can get into it more, but then I'd be practically writing an essay if I went into all the reasons why I feel some sagas should be higher or lower on the list.

Masakox, The guy saga would be more around C teir, for the sole reason though it has a large portion of the most loved moments if the series, it's changing antagonist and the pacing prevents from being A teir. And the overwhelming reliance on vegeta for emotional importance. But Vegetas arc coming to an end here is amazing, and we get to see a some sort of conflicted anatagonist, and the multiple forms of buu still had some reconciliation. But the pacing was still bad. Thats why it's C teir and not D.teir. Love to hear you response though.

I’d put it A tier. It wasn’t perfect but holy crap the emotional moments, the character development and themes make it a great arc. You can tell toriyama’s inner gag manga artist came out at times which is why the tone switches a lot, but I personally loved those moments. Especially gotenks vs super buu. People complained about the pacing but for me it’s similar to the chimera ant arc where the pacing was long but it served a bigger purpose for the theme so it’s not an issue. That theme being: goku’s search for a successor and realizing that he didn’t truly find one yet and that it wasn’t his time to retire yet. He regains his original pursuit of happiness that started the whole series. And ofc the kid buu ending which was one of the best to an arc I’ve seen. That’s why it’s an A imo. I can’t place it any lower than that.

You know what, I kinda liked the Garlic Jr Saga, just because of its focus on Gohan and Krillin’s friendship, which I thought was kind of a missed opportunity everywhere else in the show. I can’t help but think the way Gohan hugs Krillin after the battle is just too cute, and cute doesn’t happen much in Dragon Ball.

I am pretty sure I am one of the few that enjoyed the Copy Vegeta arc It literally showed his immense power in Super, his base *tanking* SSJ3 Gotenks and Goku having the hardest time against Blue Vegeta.

I think the Pilaf saga was C tier. It had a great beginning, middle, and end. Structured while a lot of the others can have open endings to set up future arcs or have too long of a middle while this has a good pace. Very different from the rest of the series but imo has the best comedy aside from maybe the RR army arc. I would also move RR to C tier because Goku never felt in danger, went on way too long and Goku felt lonely going on a personal quest

The thing about these lists is S tier can sometimes get crowded. S tier should only have 1 or 2, even if there's 100 things being ranked. This is easily fixed by just knocking everything down a tier.

This new tier list is fun. As much as I hate staff interference with manga authors, I think it was for the best in Toriyama's case before he did it on his own in the Buu saga. But it would've been interesting to see how everything would've turned out had he done things his way during the Android/Cell saga, or just Android saga since Cell wouldn't have existed if the staff didn't keep telling him to change the main villains.

I really don't divide Dragon Ball into so many arcs. Specially Z, there is only the Saiyan saga, the Freeza Saga, the Cell Saga and the Majin Buu saga. Now that said, this tier list is not that far off from mine, but I will keep my other opinions to myself.

@ That is true. Although I'd like to think of it this way. When the Z fighters first arrive on Namek, it's mostly about exploring and meeting/befriending the Namekians. For the most part it's about avoiding Frieza not confronting him. It's not until they directly confront him that it's the the saga proper.

The only point that I really disagree on, is that you should have split the Buu saga into two or three parts. You have the early Buu saga you have the evil Buu saga and then you have kind of the super evil Buu saga. Or at least do regular Buu and evil Buu as two different sagas. Some parts of that saga are better than others. Kind of like the frieza saga.

Only thing I'd say is I'd put universe 6 down a slot that arc ain't bad but compared to others outside of hit that arc didn't do much for me, and rewatching, champas dub voice rubs me the wrong way but I agree with the rest of your tier list, awesome job masako

The filler arc between Goku Black and ToP would be an A tier I figure. Great episode with the baseball game, and seeing Arale come back for some comedic moments was a nice touch. The rematch with Hit was ok, but overall those episodes were fun to watch.

Maybe because it was the Kai version but I found the Buu Saga great. It was equally dark and comedic. At least a B tier though I would go A tier. This also is my favorite time period for the show so I am happy Super didn't crazily age anyone from this except Gohan I guess.

Same it’s an A for me. A D is just disrespectful. The only real flaws is the pacing and inconsistent tone at times. But damn when it got serious, those were some of dragon balls greatest moments.

I mean...SSJ4 Gogeta is kinda overrated... and if you remove him, nothing changes. Besides Nuova Shenron none of the dragons were good to me, Omega was fine but besides that pretty much nothing else was good, there were some highlight but not enough to even put this saga to D Tier and especially to S Tier. And before someone will say about the ending...yes it was good but I just can't ad it to the whole saga, plus the ending feels like it could have been done back in Z, like Krillin and Piccolo gets an emotional send off despite then doing virtually nothing in GT (besides Piccolo sacrifice, heck Super 17 fixing his hair had more screen time then Piccolo and Krillin combined), which is why I like Supers ending slightly more then GT's

I liked the Buu saga on first viewing because of great jokes, Gotenks' move pool, and excellent use of "Hercule". But looking back, all that buildup for Gohan and they threw him away. Also, the way Vegito managed to get inside Buu's body safely makes no sense. Other world tournament had potential if we could see some action in "HFIL", or if someone else could learn the spirit bomb and the Kaio Ken for a change.

I don't understand people that would rank the Buu saga in a low tier. I am lumping the tournament saga in with the Buu arc as well, because I think it's supposed to go with that arc rather than the Saiyaman arc as Masako implied. Buu himself is somewhat of a mixed bag at times, and the big battle with Buu branched off into too many transformations and subplots. But the character development that occurs during that arc is fantastic, not the mention the introduction of new characters and concepts. In those categories I'd say it's second only to the Namek/Frieza saga. I also think Kid Buu is an excellent, pinnacle pure chaotic evil character to end the show with, the stakes were never higher than they were with Kid Buu. Then again my tier list might be controversial as well, because I would rate Cell saga as a C at the most, just barely avoiding a D ranking. I enjoyed the first half of the arc, but I hate the Cell saga starting just before he becomes Perfect Cell. I actually skip the Cell Games every viewing now. To me Perfect Cell is the least interesting villain in all of canon DBZ, he is utterly boring, and I cannot stand his design. He was much cooler in all of his earlier forms. Personal taste eh? No accounting for it.

One episode doesn't knock an arc down 3 tiers, no matter how bad. That said, Goku Black arc had other issues not referenced here and no matter how much I enjoyed it I couldn't objectively put it in A tier. If were to average how I personally felt with how I view it objectively it would be B. I think a non biased placement easily puts it in C for its narrative inconsistencies and awkward pacing.

Admittingly I kinda have a different approach to this, while dragon Ball set up the standard, dragon Ball z amped it up to a higher note as it prgressed, saga after saga it keeps getting better,( yes I liked the Buu saga). I would mostly ignore gt mostly because I still wish it didn't come to light, (seriously uub, the animation, and sagas didn't seem appealing at all). When super came in I lost my mind because in my opinion the sagas we're beyond amazing. In the what-if story I did I kinda wrote off the red ribbon army saga mostly because I didn't feel compelled or interested to see how it goes. All and all kinda against your teir list but meh you do you masako.

Dbz did amp it up but I feel like they got carried away with all the energy blasts. I think DB is better because the hand to hand combat and skill/technique is a lot more elaborated on. Just look at the tournaments!

Cool if I rant about the ToP? I think it would've been A or even S tier if Universe 7 had lost the tournament. Jiren winning would've added real stakes and a sense that our heroes aren't actually the strongest mortals in the multiverse. Seeing everyone we love get erased would've been a great tearjerker fake out ending to the series as we knew it. We'd see Jiren struggle with the tension between his wish and the right thing to do. Seeing the antagonist of the arc, who was initially only concerned with strength, wish back all of the universes because he's reminded of Goku's commitment to his loved ones would've been classic dragon ball in a way. It would've also provided a better setup for Broly, Moro, and everything moving forward, because we don't know what's out there or if everyone's even up for it. Goku doesn't have to, and frankly shouldn't, win all the time. It's like you pointed out in your what if Goku defeated Roshi series, winning makes you cocky. Just a thought

Interesting list. I can see where you're coming from (opinions are a flexible thing), but I do disagree with a lot of it. I think there are a few separations of sagas where there don't really need to be, and I think Future Zamasu is the single worst Dragon Ball villain. There's a lot of them that are eh or not terribly memorable, but I hate F Zamasu for all the wrong reasons. I'd say ToP goes firmly in A if not S (I'd probably have to be persuaded of S to be honest), and Goku Black saga goes C or lower. Goku Black is an interesting idea for a villain, and I did see your Transformation Discussion before this, so I'll rescind some of my hate for Fused Zamasu, but Future Zamasu is a character I can't appreciate, and the way the ending just dumps on Trunks makes it feel like someone on the writing staff just really hates the character and never wants him to come back. Also his new form is dumb and pointless. There's a lot to like, but I hate a lot of it too. Also surprised the Beerus saga got so high. I thought that one felt dragged out. Those are kinda my big clashing points, nothing else moves more than one tier off where you've got it, and those were ones you were borderline on.

to be honest the red ribbon army saga could have been much better if android returned outside of cameo's since whats the point of him still being alive in future trunks timeline if he doesn't help try and stop his out of control younger siblings out of a sense of wanting to help his family become better people/stop them from hurting jingle vilage. the most android 8 helps post muscle tower arc is help protect/rescue civilians in the wake of king piccolo's attack but only because suno is there. they should have made it that after he saves his friends he would help goku and tien fight king piccolo and thus instead of goku one shoting drum he and tien could tag team him and any other of king piccolo's remaining kids while goku fought piccolo one on one. also as far as i can tell android 8 has a much more advanced a.i. then androids 19 and 16 witch is likely what dr. flappe contributed to his creation since otherwise it does not make sense for him to have a more complex personality and emotions them his younger and stronger siblings. dragon ball really needs to reintroduce him in some way since id love to see him connect with 17 and 18 and babysit marron and android 17's kids who we still have not met and his reintroduction could lead into an anime version of fighters z were 21 could be so happy he is alive and goku would have to explain that he thought android couldn't be revived during the buu saga and wanted to keep him out of the android saga for his own safety/goku forgot he was still alive

I don't see the problem with Spopovich and Videl? Videl, normal not-muscular human girl with no remarkable powers (can she even do ki blasts?) except being good at normal human martial arts, against Spopovich, huge musclebound beast guy who made his living with martial arts, now with a huge evil power boost from Babidi? What's the problem? Is it just one of those "I don't like that the reality that men and women have biological differences that favor one over the other in physical strength" thing? I mean, she's not even muscular. She's not even trying to be physically strong. Even if you think there are no biological differences, someone who works out and is muscular would be stronger than someone who doesn't (that's not even to mention how much taller he is than her so he'd still have more strength if he were as stringy as Videl). I imagine Spopovich is way stronger than Goku was in Dragon Ball when he fought and beat Chi-Chi in the World Martial Arts Tournament, and can't see Videl being much stronger than Chi-Chi was if at all. Got the same problem with that? I just don't understand the beef people have with Videl vs. Spopovich.

Buu should be split into 3 sagas. The fat Buu Saga (C), the fusion saga (D), and the kid buu saga (S). I think kid buu deserves to be S tier. That saga has some of the best fight animation and some of the best drama in all of Z, plus our lord and savior. Hercule, SS3, and Vegeta's sacrifice pull fat buu out of D tier where Masako put it. Fusion can stay in D tier where it belongs.

At least half a dozen gripes that make me put black no higher than E-tier. Hair color, power level discrepancies, treatment of vegeta, zamasu's bs immortality, ecw needing a talisman that goku forgot, potara retcon, vegito not finishing the job, and most irritatingly Trunks defeating zamasu. Trunks doing it wasn't my problem. My problem was how. He uses the spirit bomb, which goku had to learn from north kai, and reforges his sword with it and cuts him in half. The problem with this is that he wasn't taught to do this and there's no way in hell earth including he, goku and vegeta had enough energy left to make this attack matter. When zamasu came back, my thoughts were "No ****."
