It might be an upopular opinion, but I'd love to see a combo of Maschine+Komplete Kontrol in a single device. As an owner of Mashine Mk3, Maschine+, Komplete Kontrol S88, S61, and M32, I definitely would still buy a combo unit.

I do wonder what that would look like form factor wise but I could be super into that. At the very least a komplete kontrol s series with internal compute power to run NI plugins as a synth would be so cool

I love the M+ as it is what it is, with all possibilities and limitations - and i‘m still far away to avail all the potential of this amazing Instrument. I‘d like NI to carry on updating this Standalone-Dream-Of-Mine instead of developing an exclusively expansive M+pro out of reach… because if i need the extra power, i can easily switch to controller mode anyway. Good luck to all of us!

Hi Dylan- I’m about ready to dive into a new setup. It’s been 20 years since I had my last set up- things have changed a ton! I’m looking to get the S61 mk2 and Maschine. I prefer to use Logic Pro on my Studio M1 Max w 64 gb RAM. Anything I create on Maschine will be imported into Logic Pro. Two questions: 1. Do you think the life cycle of NI’s current hardware is nearing an end, so perhaps hold off for a few months? I’d hate to invest thousands only to find out a newer version is available. 2. Is the Maschine + plugin limited if it’s connected to a computer, or would I be better to get the Maschine MK3?

Reason I didn't go for the Maschine+ (and that's the only reason) is the browsing system. Otherwise it has a better built quality than any Akai product. And the pads are way better than in any current Akai product.

Really interesting to listen to your thoughts in the context of yesterday's launch of Ableton Push 3... seems they've pretty much nailed every one of your hardware hopes, though still no 3rd-party plugins or VSTs. I still think I prefer the Maschine workflow, and actually the limitations of the current Plus hardware are good for forcing creativity in me so I think I'll stick with Maschine for now. Anyway, a helpful video - thanks for sharing your thoughts

Serious question, what makes the standalone better than closing the lid to the laptop and sitting an MK3 on top?
@DylanParisMusic
@DylanParisMusic Жыл бұрын
For me personally it’s the immediacy of it, I hit power on, I’m making music. I’m not worried about a computer it’s all just about the music. There are also definitely reasons that the laptop setup would be better though! I personally would not feel comfortable putting the weight of a Maschine on a laptop, but if you are then you get more power, more plugins, and battery at the cost of more weight, and having to boot up software and manage the computer every time

The original Maschine+ should have been $800 at the outset, with the OG Mk3 being reduced to sub-$500 like it has been. An improved Maschine+ with an ARM processor, m.2 drive and 16GB of RAM should be $1200 at most, because at $1k you're already at the "I should just get a computer" threshold for a lot of people. If Valve can cram a whole gaming PC in a handheld device for $650 at its highest tier, than Native Instruments should be able to make a true standalone device for $800.

Agree with everything! As an intensive user of maschine +, the biggest improvement would be for me to have the complete pack of sound that you find on maschine 2 on computer directly on maschine +. As a guitarist, I would love to see Guitar Rig on maschine + for example. The file transfer from maschine plus to computer is a pain, a transfer via wifi would be great. Moreover, the file management is extremely limited on maschine +, for example no possibility to delete user sample or project. The VST support part, as much as I would love it, that's gonna be a tall order. Most NKS-compatible VSTs do not support Linux, which is what the Maschine+ runs under the hood. Don't get me wrong - I work with Linux regularly as part of my day job, and I love it, but unless there is a dramatic shift in the userbase, Linux is going to take up a minuscule slice of the userbase, and Maschine+ would be lower than that. Unless there is something that NI can do to get the Maschine standalones to fly off the shelves, or unless NI is going to subsidize much of the dev cost, it just wouldn't make much sense for the developers to put in the effort. As for one thing I would love that could be brought in via firmware - if I connect my Maschine+ to Maschine on my computer, let me sync the project directly to the desktop straight from controller mode. If I try to do something that would prevent the project from working in standalone, give me a warning but otherwise let me run with it. It just would make it a much more seamless process to go from "I have my track and now I want to bring it to the computer for further work, post production, etc.

I not a Maschine user but if we are wishing for what we want, I think they should release a S series with removable modules that you can buy extra that you can just slot in to suit your needs, so for example have a 9 fader bank with endless encoder’s that could be swapped out to position it on either the left or right side of the screens and the same for a drum pad bank section or have a banks of 18 endless encoders so you could customise your keyboard and just have these different options to purchase as add on.

Man, I've ordered one of this things and I'm currently waiting for it. I've been asking around in the NI forums because I intend to use it live and the consensus today -end of 2023- is that this thing is still unreliable as hell. It actually seems kind of apocalyptic when you ask in that forum or on reddit. people are seem to have a pretty negative view of the machine and of NI software and how randomly it just acts up. Sometimes I wonder if the people on the other side got it back when it came out and were burnt by the experience, but from these sort of attitudes I seriously doubt people would be willing to pay 2K for anything NI related.

this is a good point. while I’ve had mine for years and not had very many issues after the first year of updates cleaned up performance, it’s hard not to see the bad will and bad vibes in the community based on recent choices from NI. If they continue down this path, they’d have to launch with a nearly perfect device with no issues on day one at a fair price to win back the market (which to be fair is what basically every product should be).

Full VST support is never going to happen. Maschine runs on Linux. The current M+ is pretty good but could do with XLR/TRS combo jacks so you can use professional microphones, and a bit more CPU power and memory. A “pro” version should have a disk drive slot (like the Akai Force), built in battery and speakers, with more CPU power and memory. Finally, there should be a keyboard version (think MPC key 61) of the M+. Many (most?) NI users are keyboard players and a combination of the S series keyboards and the M+ would be close to perfect.

Whatever it is, there’s a big chance it will be abandoned by NI. Man… I started my music journey with this company, and it’s sad to see what they’ve become. No updates, not even to maschine software, just semi recycled sampled packs and an atrocious new logo/font. @@DylanParisMusic It’s stable, for the most part, and I give them that. But it’s abandoned. That doesn’t sit well with me, given the price of it/it being their flagship. I heard that it was a 3 year old project that got scrapped, then rushed to try to make up. Given what I read in 2017 of them nearly done with a standalone maschine, and the upheaval of the company around that time, the layoffs etc. It makes sense. It’s great, especially now that it is stable, but it definitely feels abandoned. NI’s tactics don’t sit well with me anymore.

We don’t need a new m+ yet. The cpu and ram are fine as long as you manage it like a grown up. What I need is having more kontakt and reaktor ports (admittedly some things would not be able to be ported, unless they are optimised), elktron style midi probability/step skipping, improved UI to edit synths, some way of un’arming midi, and better file management/midi mapping on the box. We need money spent on software not hardware development. The quality of the NI code base is the biggest strength of the company. The only gas I would want is adat, or a pressure sensitive mpe jam. (2 in 1?). Electronic musicians of the past have created masterpieces on far less powerful hardware. There a shed-loads of unsold m+’s it never made a second run, mostly due to KZbin clickBait reviewers bitching it.

I need proof of that last point lol. I agree it would be cool to see them do as much with the gen one as possible, but I do think there’s a hardware limit for NI specifically because their software is designed for more powerful computers. Akai starts with a simple machine and targets it, Ableton and NI started with full on computers and had to pare down.

@@DylanParisMusic true dat. If NI was not bought by an investment fund who then fired all the original developers we might of got more updates. But they fired them because sales were poor, and quarterly reports needed to show profit.

This doesn't make any sense. Why would i want to pay ultra high prices for a Maschine with a very powerful CPU in it, when i can just plug it in my very powerful MacBook Pro? I will never travel anywhere without a computer and unless i can use the Maschine to read my Email and use Microsoft Office. So why would i spent so much Money on a powerful MacBook and then spending the same amount of money to have a powerful Maschine?

Because you can hit a power button immediately into a fullscale music production device with no distractions and all the power you could ever need. If it’s not something that interests you that’s extremely valid, but the idea no one would want it or that it doesn’t make sense is wild. It’s what people thought the Maschine plus would be, and at 2000 it would be 600 more than the plus launch price, not a huge leap and same ballpark as op 1 field and MPC X or keys 61

I'm one of those people that would consider it, and frankly it's because I work IT. I sit in front of a full-fledged computer everyday. When I want to make music, I want to only have that in front of me. No emails, no spreadsheets, no anything like that. Just me and my music, and I like doing that with Maschine. That being said, to each their own. Maschine+ isn't for everyone, and a Pro variant like what Dylan is proposing definitely wouldn't be either. But I'd consider it a worthwhile upgrade. Not sure I would think $2k is a fantastic price...I'd say drop the price of the plus to $800-$1000 and let the pro be more like $1600-$1800. That way it is inline with a higher spec laptop + a Maschine MK3 in terms of price.

Sometimes when you have studio sessions you don't wanna carry your laptop even at the Parc for jaming. I do not ow a Maschine plus but I have the Live II. If Native Instrument adds battery and speakers on the device I will bye it. Standalone devices are specially good for layering, something that would take too much cpu if you do it inside the computer.

People pay crazy money for boutique, standalone stuff that is nothing in comparison to a regular laptop. Just check out the price of Cirklon - which is a hardware sequencer. 2 thousand dollars. For a sequencer. Pyramid (also a sequencer) is 600 euro. Those are niche things, designed for a small group of people with very specific needs and it's hard for the companies to earn money on them.
